Nueva York — Los chapuzones en la piscina Mayor Wagner
en Harlem este año van a ser totalmente distintos a los
veranos anteriores.
Esa ya no es la misma piscina municipal pintada color crema
en la Calle 124, entre la Primera y la Segunda Avenida, pues
ha sido transformada en una playa caribeña con palmeras y
olas del mar en alto relieve. obra del artista neoyorquino
Mitchell Schorr, quien inició su proyecto en abril bajo el
permiso del Departamento de Parques y Recreación de la
ciudad.

Sin ayudante alguno, el artista de 33 años llega cada mañana
a la piscina municipal y comienza a trabajar hasta las siete de
la noche. Sin recibir paga por su trabajo, a duras penas pudo
conseguir costear la pintura utilizada para alterar la estructura
de la piscina con su ingenio, ya que según explicó, su plan va
más allá de dos o tres colores para embellecer el balneario.
Schorr quiere que los niños que viven en los barrios
neoyorquinos aprecien la belleza del arte urbano.

“Pensé que sería interesante traer la playa hasta ellos. Que
sepan que la vida no son sólo paredes color crema y rejas
negras. Todo puede ser algo diferente si pones tu mente en
ello”, dijo Mitchell Schorr.
Además de las paredes crema, el artista también cambió el
color del cercado negro que rodea la piscina, incluyéndolo en
su obra de 360 grados.
La alberca ahora está rodeada por la escena playera.
Cuando se observa desde el otro lado de la calle, la reja
parece desaparecer, ya que los colores y las imágenes
combinan exactamente con la pared al fondo del parque.
“Al crear arte en un lugar público, todos pueden apreciarlo sin temer a no entenderlo porque pueden interpretar lo que
quieran de él”, dijo el artista.
Schorr es un artista conocido por las calles de la ciudad que anteriormente pintó el mural tridimensional “A Day at the
Races” en el parque Sara D. Roosevelt en el Barrio Chino.
Esta última obra que espera terminar en “ocho días” tiene una dimensión de más de 10,000 pies cuadrados y será el
mayor mural tridimensional en la ciudad de Nueva York.

New York — The Splashes at the Greater Wagner pool in Harlem this year are going to
be totally different to the previous summers. No longer it is the same municipal pool

The work of the New York artist Mitchell Schorr, who initiated this project in April
under the permission of the Department of Parks and Recreation of the city.

Schorr wants that the children that live in the New York neighborhoods appreciate the
beauty of the urban art.
“I thought that would be interesting to bring the beach to them. That they know that life
is not only cream-colored walls and black fences. All can be somewhat different if you
put your mind in it”, said Mitchell Schorr.
Besides the walls cream, the artist also changed the color of the black fence that
surrounds the pool, including it in his work of 360 degrees.
The beach scene now surrounds the pool. When it is observed from the other side of the
street, the fence seems to disappear, since the colors and the images combine exactly with
the wall al the end of the park.
“When creating art in a public place, everyone can appreciate it without fear of
understanding it because they can interpret it however they want of it”, the artist said.
Schorr is an artist known along the city streets that previously painted the threedimensional mural “A Day at the Races” in the park Sara D. Roosevelt in Chinatown.
This last work which he expects to finish in “eight days” has a dimension of more than
10,000 square feet and will be the major three-dimensional mural in the city of New
York.
