Frequently Asked Questions for Visiting Parents The Learning Community What is a charter school?
In Rhode Island charter schools are public schools authorized by the State to operate independently.
They are regular public schools and charge no tuition, but are allowed some flexibility to explore new
strategies.
Who can attend The Learning Community?
Children who live in Central Falls, Pawtucket and Providence are eligible to enroll. Children must turn 5
by September 1st to apply for Kindergarten.
What grades does the school offer?
Our school includes students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.
Who are the teachers?
The Learning Community hires certified teachers in each grade level. Our teachers are professional,
dedicated and willing to open their doors to colleagues and parents and share what they are learning.
Most of our teachers have graduate degrees.
Will my child be taught in English or Spanish?
Instruction is in English and extra support is offered to students learning English. Many of the staff at the
Learning Community speak both English and Spanish.
Is the curriculum different than my local public school?
The Learning Community curriculum is responsive to students’ needs. As we see students succeed or
struggle we adjust to meet their needs. Like many elementary schools we have a strong emphasis on
literacy and oral expression. We also expect our students, staff and families to act as leaders in the school
and in their communities. Our curriculum is based on national research about what children need to be
able to meet their potential. Our students must meet or exceed the same state and national standards as
other local public schools. So far, our students are out-performing their sending districts.
What is the average class size?
The average class size is 20 students for one teacher. In Kindergarten, there is also a bilingual teacher
assistant in each classroom.
How does The Learning Community compare to other schools?
We are proud that The Learning Community consistently outperforms its sending districts on state tests.
Our families report a very high level of satisfaction with our school. The RIDE web site includes lots of

Enrolling and The Lottery How do students enroll at The Learning Community?
Students enroll in any charter school through a lottery system. Parents fill out a simple application and
each spring students are randomly picked to enter the school.
When does the lottery take place?
The lottery will take place every year in March. The application deadline is every year in February.
Everyone will receive notification about whether or not their child has been selected. Those selected will
receive a phone call. Those on the waiting list will receive a letter.
Is there a waiting list?
Yes, there is a waiting list. If your child is not selected you will be offered a space on the waiting list for a
year. If other students decide not to enroll, students from the waiting list are contacted. Our waiting list
is usually 600-800 students.
Is there any preference given to siblings of students already enrolled in your school?
Yes. Siblings of students already enrolled are admitted first if space is available.
How many openings does The Learning Community have each year?
We have approximately 50 openings in Kindergarten and a few openings in grades 1-8.
How old must my child be to attend Kindergarten?
Students must be 5 years old before September 1st to start Kindergarten.
Other Services Is transportation provided?
Free bus transportation is provided for students by the city they live in. The Learning Community will
help arrange transportation for your student. Students living within half a mile of the school in Central
Falls are not eligible for transportation.
How are parents involved in the school?
Parents participate in many ways at The Learning Community. Parents and family members are always
welcome in the school, and in the classrooms. Families come to Parent Cafes once a month to share ideas,
concerns and questions with administrators and staff. Families are encouraged to take leadership roles in
the school by starting projects, serving on the board, and playing a role in building a connected parent
community. We hope to use all the strengths of families to improve our school and our community. The
school works with families to ensure all families know and understand their child’s academic progress
and specific ways to help at home.
Is breakfast and lunch provided?
All children receive a free breakfast, lunch and snack every day.
Do students wear a uniform?
Students wear light blue button down shirts and navy blue pants. The uniform allows students to focus
on developing their hearts, brains and personalities.
What are the school hours and the school year?
The school is in session from 8:15 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday. We have 180 school days. Our
teachers work an additional 2 weeks over the summer in professional development.
How can I set up a visit?
We love visitors and we feel that visiting is the best way to find out if this school is the right fit for a child
and family. Every February we hold open house events for families. Please stop by or call Maria at 7229967 to set up an appointment to observe a classroom or tour the school.

Sí, hay una lista de espera. Si su hijo(a) no es seleccionado a usted se le ofrecerá un espacio en la lista de espera
por un año. Si otros estudiantes deciden no matricularse, los estudiantes que están en la lista de espera serán
contactados. Nuestra lista de espera es usualmente de 600-800 estudiantes.
¿Hay alguna preferencia para los hermanos de estudiantes ya matriculados en su escuela?
Sí. Los hermanos de los estudiantes ya matriculados en la escuela son admitidos primero si hay espacio
disponible.
¿Cuántos espacios disponibles tiene The Learning Community cada año?

La escuela está en sesión desde las 8:15 a.m. hasta las 3:00 p.m. de lunes a viernes. Tenemos 180 días de escuela.
Nuestros maestros trabajan dos semanas adicionales en el verano en desarrollo profesional.

Nos encantan los visitantes y pensamos que la mejor manera de saber si esta escuela es la apropiada para un
