God can help you become a better parent
Mother Seton
Elizabeth Ann Seton converted to
Catholicism when her dear
husband, William,
died. Rejected by her
Episcopalian family,
and without support
for her family, she
welcomed the
invitation to open a
Catholic school for
girls near Baltimore.
Leading a group of women in the
spring of 1809, the community
became the Sisters of St. Joseph and
Elizabeth became Mother Seton.
The number of sisters grew and so
did their schools and orphanages
marking the beginnings of the U.S.
parochial school system.
Time
We each have been given different
gifts to be used to expand God’s
kingdom. But there is one gift we
have all been given equally: time. If
at night we can say that our time
that day has been spent serving God
and our family, then we have been
faithful to both.
God listens
“I love the
Lord, because he
has heard my
voice and my
supplications”
(Psalm 116:1).

Each year we resolve to be a better
parent than the year before - wise,
kind, courageous and loving, just like
our Heavenly Father. Why not draw
inspiration from
his Word to
become a better
parent in the
New Year?
Wiser. If only
children came
with
instructions.
Instead, ask for
the wisdom to
know the right
thing to do. “If
any of you lacks
wisdom, let him ask
God, who gives to all
men generously and without reproaching,
and it will be given him” (James 1:5).
Kinder. We are sometimes
short-tempered or impatient with our
children but would rather be kind and
loving. They key is to remember how
God treats us. “… Be kind to one
another, tenderhearted, forgiving one
another, as God in Christ forgave you”
(Ephesians 4:32).
Courageous. Courage helps Catholic
parents raise children in a society that
isn’t always friendly to religious
families. It can take courage
to raise children with
values such as faith,
generosity, and
modesty. “Say
these things.
Exhort and
correct with all
authority”
(Titus 2:15).
More loving.
Through their
families, children first learn
about love. Demonstrate love daily
in ways your children receive love.
Confident of a parent’s love, children
then learn how to love God and
others. “Above all, let your love for one
another be intense …” (1 Peter 4:8-9).
Why do Catholics
celebrate the Epiphany?
Epiphany is Greek for
manifestation. The Feast of the
Epiphany of Our Lord is the
celebration of the visit of the
wise men to the newborn Jesus.
When they honored him, they
bore witness to the fulfillment of
God’s promise of a savior.
This feast reminds us of
our duty to adore our Lord
through prayer, worship and
self-sacrificing good work,
just as the magi did when
they traveled many miles to
worship the infant who
was God made flesh.

Teach children to look for God
God is in the hearts of all who do good. Make a game out
of looking for these signs of God's presence in the world...
Acts of kindness and compassion. Report
when you “catch” strangers helping each
other. God is behind all quiet deeds of
charity.
People of power or celebrity who
make generous donations to the poor
or dispossessed. Watch or listen for news
reports of prominent people making large
donations to victims of misfortune. God is the
inspiration for genuine philanthropy.
Someone who won't compromise on his principles or
morals - despite what the rest of society is doing. There is
much in the news about people who won’t compromise
their Christian principles. That's God working to
reassert his just laws.
Victims of tragedy who move from "Why did
this happen?" to "What can I do now?" Look
for reports of those who do good from
tragedies. Hope for the future comes from
God.
Jesus said, "I am with you always, until the
end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

Follow the leader.
Almost every child has played some
version of “Follow the Leader.” In the
game, players follow a
“leader” wherever he goes
and do whatever he does.
We stomp through
puddles, climb over
fences, swing from trees,
all to stay in the game.
We follow leaders in
real life, too. There are
leaders we may follow at school,
in sports, at church. It is important to
choose a leader who will lead us in the
right direction. Then we have to decide
how much of what a leader asks that we
are willing to do.
Jesus chose twelve special men to be
his closest followers and he became
their leader. They went where
he told them and did
what he asked. Jesus is
still calling people to
follow him today. In
fact, he has called
each of us to follow
him.
What can a parent
do? Jesus is our true
leader. We follow him before any
other leader. Help children
understand what it means to go where
Jesus tells us and to do what he asks.
The prize is worth it.
January 1 – Solemnity of the
Blessed Virgin Mary, the Holy
Mother of God. We honor Mary in
her role as the Mother of Jesus, the
Son of God.
January 2 – St. Basil the Great
(379). St. Basil founded the first
monastery in Asia Minor. He fought
passionately to protect religious
freedom and against the Arian heresy
threatening the Church. He is best
known as a skilled orator and tireless
pastor.
January 26 – Sts. Timothy and
Titus (1st century). Timothy was
converted by St. Paul and became his
trusted friend. He was with Paul at
the founding of the Church in
Corinth. Titus, also a friend of Paul’s,
served the early Church as a
peacemaker and as administrator to a
community on the island of Crete.
January 28 – St. Thomas Aquinas
(1274). Despite being imprisoned for
a year by his mother to prevent his
ordination, St. Thomas
Aquinas became
one of the
greatest
theologians of
the Church. His
writings are still
fundamental to
Christian
education today.
Now that she is 10 years old, it’s time
for me to stop solving my daughter’s
problems and let her advocate for
herself.
Kara wears thick
glasses and has always
sat in the front row
of classrooms to
better see the board.
This year her teacher
placed her toward the
back, saying that children
with more pressing
problems needed the front-row spots.
But that made it hard for Kara to see.
When her grades started to drop, I
almost called the teacher but decided to
let Kara try instead.
We rehearsed a respectful
conversation between Kara and her
teacher and she went in the next day
prepared. The teacher said she
appreciated Kara’s courtesy and
together they chose a desk in the
second row with an unobstructed view
of the board.
Solving her own problem, Kara
developed negotiating skills and
confidence. That was better than any
“fix” I could have made.

Dios puede ayudarnos a ser mejores padres
La madre Seton
Elizabeth Ann Seton se convirtió al
catolicismo cuando murió su amado
esposo, William.
Rechazada por su
familia episcopalista y
sin poder mantener a
su familia, aceptó la
invitación de abrir
una escuela católica
para niñas en
Baltimore.
Liderando a un grupo
de mujeres en la
primavera de 1809, la
comunidad se convirtió en las
Hermanas de San José y Elizabeth
pasó a ser la madre Seton. El número
de hermanas creció y lo mismo
sucedió con escuelas y orfanatos,
marcando así el inicio del sistema de
escuelas parroquiales en los EEUU.
Tiempo
Cada uno hemos recibido dones
distintos para extender el reino de
Dios. Pero hay uno que todos hemos
recibido por igual: el tiempo. Si por la
noche podemos decir que nuestro
tiempo ese día ha sido usado para
servir a Dios y a nuestra familia
habremos sido fieles a ambos.
Dios escucha
“Amo a Yahvé
porque
escucha mi
voz
suplicante”
(Salmo 116:1).

Cada año decidimos ser mejores padres
que el año anterior: sabios, amables,
valientes y amorosos como nuestro Padre
Celestial. ¿Por qué no inspirarnos en su
Palabra para ser
mejores padres
en el Año
Nuevo?
Más sabios.
Ojalá los hijos
vinieran con
un manual de
instrucciones.
Como no es así,
pidan la
sabiduría de
discernir qué es lo
que se debe hacer.
“Si alguno de ustedes
carece de sabiduría,
que la pida a Dios,
que da a todos
generosamente y sin echarlo en cara, y se la
dará” (Santiago 1:5).
Más amables. A veces tenemos mal
carácter o nos impacientamos con nuestros
hijos aunque querríamos ser amables y
amorosos. Es indispensable recordar cómo
nos trata Dios a nosotros. “Sean amables
entre ustedes, compasivos, perdonándose
mutuamente como les perdonó Dios en Cristo”
(Efesios 4:32).
Valientes. El valor ayuda a los padres
católicos a educar a hijos en una
sociedad que no siempre es
favorable a las familias
religiosas. Se necesita valor
para educar a los hijos
con valores como la
fe, la generosidad
y la modestia.
“Así has de
enseñar,
exhortar y
reprender con
toda autoridad”
(Tito 2:15).
Más amorosos.
Los niños empiezan a
aprender el amor por sus
familias. Demuestren amor a diario de
manera que sus hijos reciban amor.
Cuando confían en el amor de sus padres,
los niños aprenden a amar a Dios y a los
demás. “Ante todo, tengan entre ustedes
intenso amor…”(1 Pedro 4:8)
¿Por qué celebran los
católicos la Epifanía?
Epifanía es una palabra griega
que significa manifestación. La
fiesta de la Epifanía de Nuestro
Señor celebra la visita de los magos
a Jesús recién nacido. Cuando lo
adoraron, fueron testigos del
cumplimiento de la promesa de un
salvador que había hecho Dios.
Esta fiesta nos recuerda
nuestra obligación de adorar a
nuestro Señor con la oración, el
culto y las buenas obras
abnegadas, lo mismo que los
magos hicieron cuando viajaron
muchas millas para adorar al niño
que era Dios hecho carne.

Enseñe a sus hijos a buscar a Dios
Dios está en los corazones de todos los que obran el bien.
Convierta en un juego buscar estas señales de la presencia de Dios
en el mundo…
Actos de amabilidad y compasión. Anuncie
cuando “sorprenda” a algún desconocido
ayudando a otra persona. Dios está tras todas
las obras de caridad realizadas con
discreción.
La gente poderosa o famosa que hace
donativos generosos a los pobres o a los
desposeídos. Miren o escuchen reportajes de
noticias sobre gente prominente que hace grandes
donativos a las víctimas de alguna desgracia. Dios
inspira toda filantropía genuina.
Alguien que no arriesgará sus principios o su moralidad a pesar de
lo que haga el resto de la sociedad. Hay mucho en las noticias sobre
gente que no hará concesiones en lo referente a sus principios
católicos. Ahí está Dios obrando para reafirmar sus justas
leyes.
Víctimas de una tragedia que fueron desde “¿Por
qué sucedió esto?” a “¿Qué puedo hacer ahora?”
Busque informes sobre personas que logran hacer
el bien inspiradas por una tragedia. La esperanza
por el futuro procede de Dios.
Jesús dijo: “Y he aquí que yo estoy con ustedes todos
los días hasta el fin del mundo” (Mateo 28:20).
Mateo 4:12-23,
Sigan al líder.
Casi todos los niños han jugado a alguna
versión de “Sigue al líder”. En el juego los
jugadores siguen a un “líder”
donde quiera que vaya y en
todo lo que hace. Pisamos
charcos, saltamos vallas, nos
columpiamos en las ramas
de los árboles, cualquier
cosa con tal de
permanecer en el juego.
En la vida también
seguimos a los líderes. Hay
líderes en la escuela, en los
deportes, en la iglesia. Es importante
elegir a un líder que nos guiará por la
dirección correcta. Y luego tenemos que
decidir cuánto haremos de lo que nos pida
el líder.
1 de enero – Solemnidad de la
Bienaventurada Virgen María, Santísima
Madre de Dios. Honramos a María en su
papel de Madre de Jesús, el Hijo de Dios.
2 de enero – San Basilio Magno (379).
San Basilio fundó el primer monasterio en
Asia Menor. Luchó apasionadamente para
proteger la libertad religiosa y contra el
arrianismo, una herejía que amenazaba a
la Iglesia. Se le conoce como un dotado
orador y un pastor incansable.
26 de enero – Santos Timoteo y Tito
(siglo I). San Pablo logró la conversión
de Timoteo y se convirtieron en fieles
amigos. Timoteo estaba con Pablo
durante el establecimiento de la Iglesia en
Corinto. Tito, también amigo de Pablo,
Jesús eligió a doce hombres especiales
para que fueran sus seguidores y Él se
convirtió en su líder. Fueron donde
Él les dijo e hicieron lo que
les pidió. Hoy Jesús sigue
llamando a la gente para
que lo sigan. En realidad
nos ha llamado a cada
uno de nosotros para que
lo sigamos.
¿Qué pueden hacer los
padres? Jesús es nuestro
líder verdadero. Lo
seguimos a Él antes que a ningún
otro líder. Ayude a sus hijos a que
entiendan lo que significa ir donde nos
diga Jesús y hacer lo que Él pide. La
recompensa vale la pena.

28 de enero – Santo Tomás de
Aquino (1274). A pesar de que su madre
lo encerró un año para evitar que se
ordenara, santo Tomás de Aquino se
convirtió en uno de los mejores
teólogos de la
Iglesia. Todavía
hoy sus escritos
siguen siendo
fundamentales
para la
educación
cristiana.
Ahora que tiene 10 años ha
llegado el momento de que yo deje de
solucionar los
problemas de mi
hija y de que
permita que se las
arregle sola. Kara
lleva gafas gruesas
y siempre se ha
sentado en la
primera fila de la clase
para poder ver mejor la
pizarra. Este año su
maestra la colocó por
detrás diciendo que había niños con
problemas más urgentes que necesitaban
los primeros sitios. Pero Kara no veía
bien. Cuando sus notas empezaron a
bajar, casi llamé a su maestra pero decidí
que Kara se defendiera sola.
Ensayamos una conversación
respetuosa entre Kara y su maestra y fue
preparada al día siguiente. La maestra
dijo que apreciaba la cortesía de Kara y
eligieron juntas un pupitre en la segunda
fila desde el que se veía la pizarra sin
obstáculos por delante.
Al resolver su propio problema, Kara
desarrolló habilidades de negociación y
de confianza. Esto es mejor que cualquier
“arreglo” que hubiera hecho yo.
