Welcome to the new school year. This year will be very special for your child,
and you can help him or her enjoy learning English in very simple ways. In the next
few weeks, your child will learn to:
■ Identify hobbies and describe likes and dislikes.
I like (bowling).

Yes, I do. OR No, I don’t.
■ Describe abilities.
I’m good at (bowling).
Are you good at (bowling)?
Yes, I am. OR No, I’m not.
You can work with your child to help him or her. You may wish to do any of the
following activities:
■ If your child likes to make things, help him or her start a scrapbook journal in
which your child can collect thoughts, drawings, photos, poems, letters, and
other personal mementos). This month, he or she can choose the book,
decorate the cover, and make an introductory page describing himself or
herself and what things he or she likes and dislikes and is or isn’t good at.
■ If your child enjoys the computer and the Internet, suggest starting a blog or
fotolog (journals hosted by specialized Internet sites that can be viewed by
others who can also leave their messages). If you need help, seek advice from
a computer-savvy friend or family member who can show you what blogs and
fotologs are like before you decide if this is what you want to do. Alternatively,
seek help from the school authorities to find out whether your child’s school has
a site that could host his or her blog. A key difference between a scrapbook and
a blog or fotolog is that a scrapbook is private. It will only be read by people
your child trusts. Blogs and fotologs are public, and anyone can read them.
■ Install the English Adventure 5 CD-ROM on your child’s computer and instruct
him or her to play with Unit 1.
As part of our study of hobbies and personal abilities, we are going to read a
story involving characters from Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire (Student Book 5,
page 13). Take this opportunity to talk with your child about the things he or she
enjoys doing and the things he or she doesn’t enjoy (whether he or she is good or
bad at them). Discuss the value of generosity and friendship and explain how to
demonstrate that to friends and family.

Querida familia,
Usted puede trabajar con su hijo para ayudarle. Pruebe hacer cualquiera de las
actividades siguientes:
■ Si a su hijo o hija le gustan las actividades manuales, invítele a comenzar un
“scrapbook” para todo el año (una especie de diario con pensamientos,
dibujos, fotos, poemas, cartas y otros recuerdos personales). Este mes,
pueden elegir el cuaderno que servirá de base al scrapbook, pueden decorar
las tapas y crear una página introductoria describiéndose a sí mismos, sus
gustos, sus fortalezas y debilidades.
■ Si a su hijo o hija le interesan las computadoras y el Internet, sugiérale
comenzar un “Blog” o un “Fotolog” (diarios electrónicos hospedados por sitios
Web especializados que pueden ser visitados por otros internautas para leer el
contenido y dejar mensajes). Si necesita ayuda, busque consejo de un amigo o
familiar que se especialice en computadoras y pídale que le muestre como
son los blogs y fotologs para decidir lo que desea hacer. Una alternativa es
averiguar si el colegio tiene un sitio que pueda hospedar blogs de alumnos.
Una diferencia clave entre un scrapbook y un blog o fotolog es que el primero
es privado (solamente será leído por personas de su confianza) mientras que
los segundos son públicos y cualquiera puede leerlos.
■ Instale English Adventure 5 CD-ROM en la computadora e invite a su hijo a
jugar con la Unidad 1.
Al estudiar los pasatiempos y las habilidades leeremos un cuento con los
personajes de la película de Disney Atlantis: The Lost Empire (Student Book 5,
página 13). Aproveche esta oportunidad para conversar con su hijo o hija sobre las
actividades para las que tiene mayor capacidad y disfruta, y aquellas que no
disfruta (más allá de que tenga o no capacidad para realizarlas). Converse sobre el
valor de la generosidad y la amistad y como demostrarlas a amigos y familiares.
