- It’s!kind!of!like!real!serious,!Tomeo!!–!exclaimed!Enrique!
- Hey,!don’t!scare!me!!–!said!the!other!opening!his!eyes!and!freaking!out!a!bit!C!You!
want!to!tell!me!what’s!going!on?!
- Tomeo,!don’t!your!hands!hurt?!
- My!hands?!No!way!!Not!at!all.!!

Puzzled!by!the!question,!Tomeo!looked!down!and!studied!the!palms!of!his!hands,!open!next!to!
each!other!as!if!they!were!the!pages!of!a!book.!Then,!very!confused,!he!raised!his!gaze!again,!
looked!at!the!building!opposite,!and!almost!instantly,!the!memory!of!his!beginnings!as!a!
chocolate!maker!came!to!his!mind.!
!
Tomeo!remembered!it!as!if!it!were!yesterday:!he!was!still!just!a!shrimp!when!he!started!
wandering!around!his!father’s!chocolate!factory.!He!usually!went!in!the!afternoons,!
particularly!from!Thursday,!when!the!weekly!peak!of!activity!began.!
!
During!the!first!few!years,!he!spent!most!of!his!time!watching!and!learning!all!the!secrets!of!
the!trade,!as!well!as!helping!out!with!some!of!the!more!simple!jobs:!stirring!the!chocolate,!
cleaning!the!utensils,!putting!the!chocolates!into!boxes…!

Even!though!he!was!only!little,!Tomeu!took!it!all!very!seriously;!so!much!so!that!whenever!
Enrique!C!his!friend!who!lived!in!the!house!opposite!C!suggested!going!to!play!in!the!square,!
Tomeo!replied:!!!!!!!!

- I!can’t!today,!I’ve!got!a!lot!of!work!to!do.!Maybe…!maybe!tomorrow.!
- To!which!Enrique!always!replied:!
- Gosh,!Tomeo,!!I!reckon!you!work!too!much…!

As!the!years!passed,!Tomeo!started!to!spend!more!and!more!time!in!the!workshop.!Now!he!
didn’t!only!go!in!the!afternoons,!nor!only!from!Thursday,!but!first!thing!in!the!morning,!every!
day!of!the!week,!as!if!there!were!nothing!more!important!to!do!!in!the!world!than!fill!boxes!
and!cornets!with!chocolates.!!

Can!you!imagine!that!Tomeo!was!so!busy!!he!didn’t!even!notice!that!as!his!hands!were!
growing,!they!were!also!slowly!getting!darker!and!darker;!neither!that!bit!by!bit!he!was!
becoming!infused!with!the!intense!aroma!of!chocolate;!and!not!even!that!his!fingers!were!
beginning!to!acquire!a!certain!lingering!taste!of!sweet!chocolate.!In!other!words,!Tomeo!was!
so!absorbed!in!his!work!that!he!didn’t!realize!that!his!hands!were!beginning!to!!chocolatise.!!!!!!!!!!

And!when!on!Saturday!afternoons!Enrique!went!to!find!him!and!take!him!out!to!dance!for!a!
while,!Tomeo!always!said!the!same:!

- Go!dancing?!Today?!But!it’s!Saturday!today,!the!day!of!the!week!when!I!have!most!
work!!Perhaps…!Perhaps!we!could!go!on!Monday.!

To!which!Enrique!always!replied:!

Gosh,!Tomeo…!I!reckon!you!work!too!much!C!and!then!sighed.!
!
But!Monday!would!arrive!and!they!never!went!dancing,!probably!because!it!wasn’t!the!best!
day!for!it,!but!above!all!because!Tomeo!had!already!started!thinking!about!the!chocolates!he!
was!going!to!make!that!next!weekend.!!

And!if!until!then!Tomeo!had!only!had!time!for!work,!things!got!even!worse!when!he!decided!to!
open!his!own!chocolate!factory.!From!that!moment!he!spent!the!whole!day!C!and!even!part!of!
the!night!C!working!nonCstop:!melting!chocolate,!slicing!almonds,!filling!moulds,!cutting!
candied!fruit...!

And!in!the!mornings!when!he!went!to!the!workshop!he!was!so,!so!tired!that!he!nearly!always!
fell!asleep!on!the!bus.!And,!of!course,!because!little!boys!and!girls!have!a!sixth!sense!for!
discovering!nice!sweet!things!around!them,!!he!nearly!always!woke!up!to!find!a!slyCfaced!kid!
licking!one!his!chocolotised!(covered!in!chocolate)!fingers.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And!when,!on!the!arrival!of!summer,!Enrique!would!invite!Tomeo!to!come!!on!holiday!with!his!
family,!he!always!responded:!

walk,!just!like!that,!without!having!anything!to!do!or!any!place!to!go.!!

Tomeo!scratched!the!back!of!his!neck!a!couple!of!times!thoughtfully.!And!realizing!that!he!had!
nothing!to!do!all!morning,!nor!all!day,!nor!all!week,!nor,!in!fact,!for!the!rest!of!his!life,!

That!morning!the!two!friends!went!for!a!long!walk!on!the!treeClined!path,!without!hurrying,!

the!leaves!crunched!beneath!their!feet.!When!they!reached!the!house!where!Enrique!had!lived!

Intrigado#por#la#pregunta,#Tomeo#bajó#la#vista#y#observó#atentamente#las#palmas#de##sus#
manos,#abiertas#una#al#lado#de#la#otra#como#si#fueran#páginas#de#un#libro.#Entonces,#muy#
confuso,#volvió#a#alzar#la#vista,#miró#el#edificio#de#enfrente,#y#casi#al#instante,#le#vinieron#a#la#
memoria#sus#inicios#como#bombonero.#
#
Tomeo#lo#recordaba#como#si#fuera#hoy:#todavía#era#un#enano#cuando#empezó#a#merodear#por#
el#obrador#del#padre.#Iba#habitualmente#por#las#tardes,#en#especial#a#partir#del#jueves,#el#dia#en#
que#se#iniciaba#el#pico#de#trabajo#semanal.#
#
Duranto#los#primeros#años#se#pasaba#la#mayor#parte#del#tiempo#observando#y#aprendiendo#
todos#los#secretos#del#oficio,#y#también#echando#una#mano#en#algunas#de#las#tareas#más#
sencillas:##removiendo#el#chocolate,#limpiando#los#utensilios,#colocando#los#bombones#en#
cajas…#

Aunque#solo#era#un#niño#Tomeo#se#tomaba#todo#aquello#muy#en#serio;#tanto#que#cada#vez#que#
Enrique#–#el#amigo#que#vivía#en#la#casa#de#enfrente#–#le#proponía#ir#a#jugar#a#la#plaza,#Tomeo#le#
respondía:#

9 Hoy#no#puedo,#tengo#mucho#trabajo.#Quizás…#quizás#mañana.#

A#lo#que#Enrique#siempre#contestaba:#

Con#el#tiempo#Tomeo#empezó#a#pasar#más#y#más#horas#en#el#obrador.#Ya#no#iba#sólo#por#las#
tardes,#ni#tampoco#a#partir#del#jueves,#si#no#a#primera#hora#de#la#mañana#y#cada#día#de#la#
semana,#como#si#en#el#mundo#no#hubiera#nada#más#importante#que#hacer#que#llenar#cajas#y#
cucuruchos#de#bombones.#

Imaginaos#si#iba#atareado#Tomeo,#que#ni#siquiera#se#dio#cuenta#de#que#a#medida#que#las#manos#
le#crecían,#también#se#le#iban#oscureciendo#poco#a#poco;#ni#tampoco#de#que#poco#a#poco#se#le#
contagiaban#del#intenso#aroma#del#cacao;#ni#que#incluso#los#dedos#le#empezaron#a#adquirir#un#
cierto#regusto#de#chocolate#dulce.#En#otras#palabras,#Tomeo#estaba#tan#pendiente#del#trabajo#
que#no#se#dio#cuenta#que#sus#manos#empezaban#a#chocolatear.#

Y#cuando#los#sábados#por#la#tarde#Enrique#lo#iba#a#buscar#para#salir#a#bailar#un#rato,#Tomeo#
siempre#le#respondía:#

9 ¿A#bailar?#¿Hoy?#¡Pero#si#es#sábado!,#el#día#de#la#semana#que#tengo#más#trabajo!#

Pero#llegaba#el#lunes#y#nunca#iban#a#bailar,#probablemente#porque#no#era#el#mejor#día#para#
hacerlo,#pero#sobre#todo#porque#Tomeo#ya#había#empezado#a#pensar#en#los#bombones#que#
haría#el#próximo#fin#de#semana.#

Y#si#hasta#entonces#Tomeo#sólo#había#tenido#tiempo#para#el#trabajo,#la#cosa#todavía#empeoró#
cuando#decidió#abrir#su#propia#bombonería.#A#partir#de#ese#momento#se#pasaba#todo#el#día#–#e#
incluso#una#parte#de#la#noche#–#trabajando#sin#parar:#fundiendo#chocolate,#trinchando#
almendras,#rellenando#moldes,#cortando#fruta#confitada…#

Y#por#las#mañanas#cuando#iba#al#obrador#estaba#tan,#tan#cansado#que#casi#siempre#se#quedaba#
dormido#en#el#autobús.#Y#claro,#como#los#más#pequeños#tienen#un#sexto#sentido#para#descubrir#
las#cosas#dulces#y#buenas#que#hay#a#su#alrededor,#casi#siempre#se#despertaba#con#un#niño#con#
cara#de#pillo#lamiéndole#uno#de#los#dedos#enchocolatados#(cubiertos#de#chocolate.)#

Y#cuando,#al#llegar#el#verano,#Enrique#proponía#ir#de#vacaciones#a#Tomeo#con#su#familia,#
siempre#le#contestaba:#

en#un#banco#al#sol;##Tomeo#con#los#ojos#entornados,#medio#deslumbrado#por#la#claridad#del#
mediodía,#y#Enrique#mirando#a#su#amigo,#feliz#de#sentirlo#cerca#después#de#tanto#tiempo,#tanto#
tiempo#sin#tiempo.#

De#repente#Enrique#miró#las#manos#de#Tomeo#y#algo#lo#asustó.#

Intrigado#por#la#pregunta,#Tomeo#bajó#la#vista#y#se#observó#atentamente#las#palmas#de#las#
manos,#abiertas#una#al#lado#de#la#otra#como#si#fueran#páginas#de#un#libro.#

Rápidamente#se#dio#cuenta#de#lo#que#le#pasaba:#el#calor#del#sol#de#mediodía#le#estaba#
fundiendo#las#manos.#
#
Mientras#unos#chorretones#marrones#se#deslizaban#por#sus#dedos,#Tomeo#volvió#a#alzar#la#
vista,#miró#el#edificio#de#enfrente#y#se#quedó#unos#instantes#en#silencio.#Después,#con#los#ojos#
llenos#de#lágrimas,#volvió#a#bajar#la#cabeza#y#las#manos#de#color#chocolate,#con#las#que#durante#
tanto#tiempo#había#trabajado,#se#habían#esfumado#del#todo.#
#
En#su#lugar#habían#aparecido#otras#manos,#blancas#como#la#nieve,#sin#una#sola#arruga,#suaves#
como#la#piel#de#un#niño…#Unas#manos#casi#por#estrenar.#
#
Entonces#Tomeo#suspiró#profundamente,#dio#tres#golpecitos#en#el#hombro#de#su#amigo#y,#
entornando#los#ojos#de#nuevo,#sentenció:#
