La Vida “Oculta” de Jesús
The feast of the Baptism of the Lord marks the
end of the Christmas season, and the historical
event of Jesus’ baptism marks the end of what
is sometimes called His “hidden” life.
La fiesta del Bautismo del Señor marca el final
del tiempo de Navidad y el evento histórico del
Bautismo de Jesús marca el final de lo que a
veces llamamos Su vida “oculta”.
After describing events surrounding his birth
and infancy, the gospels record only one event
in the life of Jesus before His baptism – one
moment at the age of twelve when he was lost
and then found in the Temple in Jerusalem.

The remainder of his childhood, adolescence
and young adulthood remains “hidden” from
any historical record.
We know he was a carpenter who learned
enough of the scriptures and the Law to be
regarded as a teacher/rabbi, but little else is
known of Jesus’ life in Nazareth.
With the imaginations God has given to each
of us, let us make time to pray about what
Jesus, saw, heard, thought and prayed about
during those years when He was growing in
wisdom, age and grace before God and people
– but outside of the view of recorded history!
El recuerdo de su niñez, adolescencia y juventud
permanece “oculto” de todo registro histórico.
Sabemos que fue un carpintero que aprendió
lo suficiente de las escrituras y la Ley para ser
referido como maestro/rabino, pero poco se sabe
de la vida de Jesús en Nazaret.
Con la imaginación que Dios nos ha dado a cada
uno de nosotros, hagamos tiempo para rezar
sobre lo que Jesús vio, escuchó, aprendió y rezó

voluntad de Dios.” Es decir, como bautizados católicos,
existe sólo un regalo para dar a Jesús - el regalo de
nosotros mismos. Una vez que nos entregamos a Dios,
verdaderamente podremos conocer la voluntad de Dios.
The Catholic Catechism states that “Jesus’ immersion in
the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to
themselves to do God’s will.” In other words, as baptized
Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give to Jesus
– the gift of ourselves. Once we surrender ourselves to God,
we will know in our hearts what God calls us to do.
