First Quarter is Complete!

Students and families we hope you are ready to finish the first
semester strong. Parents and guardians, please continue to
check students grades weekly on PowerSchool.
From Mr. Costello: Thank you for an excellent start of the 2015-16
school year at Proviso West High School. It has been a pleasure
to have met parents during Teacher/Parent conferences, Bring
your Parents to School Day, and the Hispano Fest this past
month in Melrose Park. Talking with parents gave me an
opportunity to discuss the positive academic and social climate
at PWHS. This year PWHS is offering freshmen students tutoring
and support during their lunch periods to insure they pass all
their class. Additionally, PWHS has after school tutoring in the
library to help students with all their classes.
Important Dates:
November 11 —Veterans’ Day
Currently, we are reading the novel Breaking Through in my ELL
classes. This autobiographical novel documents the author’s
journey from a migrant field worker in California to a college
English professor. This novel illustrates that all students can
achieve their dreams if they work hard and attend school. Please
encourage your son/daughter to be successful in all their classes
during 2015-16 school year.
November 25 - Thanksgiving Break

January 4 - First Day of Q3 and Semester 2
From Mrs. Fromius-Hough: ELL 1 : The students have been busy
using Achieve 3000. It is setup as Dual Language so students
can read the articles in either Spanish or English. Most students
read at least one article a week in English and have been scoring
75% on Try 1. Also, we have completed Unit 1 in the Red Edge
and have been learning about present tense verbs, plural nouns,
adjectives, and identifying Spanish to English cognates. Finally,
the students researched a Hispanic person who has influenced
people in the United States and created a biography graphic
organizer and wrote a MEL-Con paragraph in English.
ELL 4: The students have used Achieve 3000 two days a week
during September focusing on the identifying the main idea and
supporting details and summarizing information. Many students
are on their way to hit the 40 Activity goal for the semester. We
have completed Unit 1 in the Green Edge which focused on plot,
conflict, and characterization. Since this course is primarily
freshman, we have also spent time each week looking at
individual grades and discussing the grading policy and
important school dates.
From Mrs. Sassetti: ELL 3 and EL Bridging Classes
At the start of the school year all students in Mrs. Sassetti’s ELL3 and EL Bridging classes completed a unit on investing in the stock market. Working in teams they entered the National Stock
Market Game where students invested $100,000 virtual dollars in a diversified stock portfolio.
They are competing against other Illinois high schools and presently their teams are in first, second, and third place out of 121 other Illinois teams. Congratulations!

Del Sr. Costello: Gracias por un excelente inicio de año escolar de 2015
-16 en la Escuela Secundaria Proviso West (PWHS). Ha sido un placer
reunirme con los padres durante las reuniones de padres y maestros, el
día en que se invitó a los padres a la escuela y la Fiesta Hispana del
mes pasado en el parque Melrose. El hablar con los padres me permitió
tratar sobre el clima académico y social positivo de PWHS. Este año,
PWHS ofrece a los estudiantes del primer año tutoría y apoyo durante
los períodos de almuerzo para que aprueben todas sus clases. Además,
PWHS tiene tutoría después de clases en la biblioteca para ayudar a los
estudiantes en lo relativo a sus clases.
Actualmente estamos leyendo la novela Breaking Through (Superando
Barreras) en mis clases de ELL. Esta novela autobiográfica documenta
la superación del autor de trabajador agrícola migrante en California a
profesor universitario de inglés. Esta novela muestra que todos los
estudiantes pueden alcanzar sus sueños si trabajan con empeño y
asisten a la escuela. Por favor anime a su hijo a tener éxito en todas
sus clases durante el año escolar.

De la Sra. Fromius-Hough: ELL 1: Los alumnos han estado muy

semana en inglés y han logrado una puntuación de 75% en la prueba
trimestre y del 2o semes1. Además, hemos terminado la Unidad 1 en “Red Edge” y hemos
tre
venido aprendiendo sobre verbos en tiempo presente, sustantivos
plurales, adjetivos e identificación de cognados en español e
inglés. Finalmente, los estudiantes investigaron sobre una persona
hispana que ha influido en los demás en los Estados Unidos, crearon un
organizador gráfico de la biografía y escribieron un párrafo “MEL-Con”
en inglés.
ELL 4: Los estudiantes usaron el programa Achieve 3000 dos días a la
semana durante septiembre, concentrándose en identificar la idea
principal y detalles de apoyo, y resumir información. Muchos estudiantes
están en camino a la meta de Actividad 40 para el semestre. Hemos
terminado la Unidad 1 de “Green Edge”, que se centró en la trama, el
conflicto y la caracterización. Puesto que este curso es sobre todo del
primer año, también hemos dedicado tiempo cada semana a mirar
calificaciones individuales y a discutir las normas de calificaciones y las
fechas importantes de la escuela.
De la Sra. Sassetti: ELL 3 y clases de EL Bridging (Puente de EL)
Al inicio del año escolar, todos los alumnos de ELL3 y EL Bridging de la señora Sassetti completaron
una unidad sobre inversiones en el mercado de valores. Trabajando en equipos, entraron en el juego del
mercado de valores nacional, donde los estudiantes invirtieron $100,000 de dólares virtuales en una
cartera diversificada de acciones. Están compitiendo con otras escuelas secundarias de Illinois y actualmente sus equipos están en primero, segundo y tercer lugar entre 121 equipos de Illinois.
