This Pastor’s Corner was written on June 1, 2003. I found it very fitting for this Sunday, since the Diaconate Ordination
took place yesterday. I hope that you find it interesting and fitting, as well.
Dear Friends,
Last Sunday I concelebrated the Diaconate Ordination Mass at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey. Eric Fuchs, a parishioner, along with thirteen other men was being ordained for service in the
Church of Newark. Eric had asked me to vest him at the Mass with the stole and dalmatic, which he would be
wearing for the first time - a sign of his new office. It was an honor for me and one I had never been asked to do
before this day. One of the most moving moments for me during the two hour ceremony was when all fourteen of
the candidates lay prostrate on the floor, before the main altar, as the Litany of the Saints was being sung - a
prayer asking God through the intercession of the Saints to pour out His blessings on His chosen men. As I stood
just a few feet from Eric, I thought back to the morning when I, too, knelt with eight of my classmates on that
cold marble floor of Sacred Heart Cathedral in Richmond. I wondered what Eric was thinking. I don’t remember
what I was thinking at that moment on my own Ordination Day. Nevertheless, I know we both were anxious and
a bit nervous as we were entering the clerical life officially for the first time. I know back then, at 25, I was an
idealistic young man who thought he knew it all and would change the people. Today the blond hair has changed
to grey, the idealism, although still there, oftentimes gives way to realism, and I realize that I can really only
change one
person - myself. And I know now that I don’t know it all! And hopefully, over the years, a bit
of wisdom set in.
After the ceremony, I congratulated Eric’s proud parents, Wolfgang and Lydia, who last month moved to
retire in Pennsylvania. I recalled my own family, Mom and Dad, Madeleine and Jack, at my Ordination Day. As
Eric’s parents had done, my family was there to support me back then and still is there with their encouragement
and support today. Family is very important to me.
I ask your prayers for Eric that he will live up to his commitment of service. He has gone through some
peaks and valleys during his seminary years, but the valleys, as many of you know, help to build character and
make us stronger. I also ask a remembrance in your prayers that I continue to be that good servant to my people.
It was a beautiful day, well worth the drive, that began at 6 o’clock in the morning and ended up back here
in Burke at 7:30 that night. I vested Eric. Bur Eric’s two-word response to me has given me much food for reflection. Hopefully, I can continue to be what he said to me last Sunday.

Praying for the Sick and Hospital Visits –
This information has been available in the past, but because it concerns each one of us, it is important that it be
available once again. We never know when someone we know and love will be in the hospital. So what
should we do if we would like a clergy member to visit our sick relative or friend? Our Diocese recognizes
the fact that it is not always possible, because of time and distance, for the sick person’s parish priest to make
the hospital visit. But visiting the sick is of the utmost importance, and so the Diocese has assigned specific
parishes, in whose boundaries a hospital is located, to cover the spiritual needs of patients in that particular hospital. Fairfax
Hospital, because of its size, has a priest assigned full-time to its Pastoral Care Department. Here is a list of some of the
area’s hospitals and the parishes assigned to provide for the spiritual needs of their patients.
Arlington Virginia Hospital Center – St. Ann Parish
Alexandria Hospital – Blessed Sacrament Parish
Fair Oaks Hospital – St. Veronica Parish
Inova Fairfax Hospital – Full Time Clergy Member, also St. Ambrose Parish

Mount Vernon Hospital – Good Shepherd Parish
So when your loved ones become ill, notify your parish, asking for prayers, then, notify the parish that is responsible for

DIABETES AWARENESS WEEK
Fundraiser for “The American Diabetes
Association’s Tour de Cure”
Nativity Catholic School is proud to announce Diabetes Awareness Week at the school. There will be a dress
down/Tag day next Wednesday, May 28th. The money
raised will support The American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure bike ride coming up on June 1st.
Nativity's own team, Team Lancet-a-lot, has grown to
include several families and individual students that will
be riding to raise funds for research. On Tuesday, May
27th, several of the Team members will address the upper grades and then speak in the individual lower grade
classrooms later that day. The goal of these speeches is
to increase awareness of types 1 and 2 diabetes. Mrs.
Chutuape, student parent, plans to raise funds at an after school lemonade stand later in the week and she will
be supplying buttons to the students to be worn during

Our Nativity History Project has completed its initial

history of the parish over our first forty years, and eleven
articles in the “Nativity Voices” archives. These include a
parishioner’s recollection of parish life from 1977, and

outdoor statuary and landscaping, the Father Sikora Council
of the Knights of Columbus, the Prayer Shawl Ministry, Our
Lady of Knock Society, “Other Community Activities” (a
compilation of 18 descriptions and reflections on some of the
many important outreach efforts of the parish), Women of
Nativity, religious education, and the church buildings. More
than two dozen parishioners have contributed to these articles.

Id y haced discípulos en toda la tierra
Con la Ascensión concluye el tiempo de la presencia visible de Jesús en medio de sus discípulos y se abre el tiempo de la
Iglesia.
Decir tiempo de la Iglesia es decir tiempo de los discípulos, de los evangelistas, de los testigos de Cristo resucitado. Y decir
tiempo de la Iglesia es decir también nuestro tiempo, el de quienes deseamos vivir como comunidad haciendo del
seguimiento de Jesús nuestra opción de vida.
Leyendo el texto evangélico descubrimos un programa de vida cristiana, basado en el mandato del Resucitado: “Id y haced
discípulos de todos los pueblos, bautizándoles en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo”, o, lo que es lo
mismo, hacer discípulos para sumergirlos en la comunión de la vida trinitaria de Dios.
Tal es la alta finalidad del envío. La obediencia a esta misión constituye para la comunidad cristiana de todos los tiempos la
verificación de la propia fidelidad a la voluntad del Señor.
Y quien se hace discípulo de Cristo descubre las señas de un
Dios que no tolera la injusticia, que para ayudarnos se ha hecho débil, que ha escogido lo débil para confundir a los fuertes.
Lo anterior reclama formar cristianos maduros, que estén prontos para responder a quien nos pide razón de la esperanza que
hay en nosotros (cf 1 Pt.3, 15).
Sólo así seremos piedras vivas capaces de cooperar a la construcción de la Iglesia. (cf. Ib.2,5).
Observamos cómo el bautismo, que es la base y el fundamento del programa de vida de todo cristiano, está apuesto, según
el mandato de Jesús, en relación con lo de hacer discípulos, es decir, con la tarea de formar al cristiano para conocer, sentir
y vivir el admirable don y encargo del Señor.
“Enseñándoles a guardar todo lo que os he mandado”. Eso es lo que deberán enseñar los discípulos.
A este respecto, habrá que estar atentos a un doble riesgo:
Añadir cosas que Jesús no ha enseñado, ni se derivan de su enseñanza, e imponerlas a los demás y, por otra parte, silenciar
aquellas que pueden resultar más provocadoras para nuestro tren de vida y para nuestra sociedad que persigue un hedonismo rampante. Por eso, la urgencia de retornar con todo el corazón a un conocimiento cada vez mejor del evangelio.
Coincidiendo con el encargo de Jesús de llevar el Evangelio hasta los confines de la tierra, y precisamente por ello, celebra
hoy la Iglesia la Jornada Mundial de las Comunicaciones Sociales. La Jornada viene acompañada de un mensaje del Papa
Benedicto XVI titulado “Verdad, anuncio y autenticidad de vida en la era digital”.
Es una invitación a formar las conciencias ente la responsabilidad que incumbe a cada individuo, grupo o sociedad, en la
formación de la opinión pública y en el uso y desarrollo de los nuevos medios de comunicación.
Consciente del papel tan decisivo que los medios de comunicación han adquirido en la sociedad actual, el Papa reclama la
inclusión de la comunicación social en la que denomina cuestión antropológica y reivindica “para la defensa de la dignidad
de la persona humana por parte de los medios, la necesidad de una infoética, así como existe la bioética en el campo de la
medicina y de la investigación científica”.
Junto al excelente servicio que la mayoría de los medios prestan a la sociedad, es lamentable que algunos, en razón del lucro y para lograr audiencia, promuevan programas deleznables, que degradan a los promotores y a los colaboradores.
Sería igual de lamentable que la objetividad quedara supeditada a intereses de grupo o de partido.
La Jornada es también una invitación a nuestras Iglesias para “promover la Nueva Evangelización en la Era Digital con
verdad y autenticidad”. Los medios de comunicación son “el primer areópago de los tiempos modernos”. Por eso pueden
ser un excelente apoyo para difundir el Evangelio, para promover el diálogo y la cooperación a todos los niveles, para defender aquellos principios que son indispensables para la construcción de una sociedad respetuosa con la dignidad de la persona y del bien común.
Desde aquí envío un saludo cordial y agradecido a las empresas promotoras de los medios de comunicación presentes entre
nosotros y, de manera especial, a los profesionales que los hacen posibles. Y, por supuesto, agradezco el buen servicio de la
Delegación Diocesana y de todo los que colaboran en la misma.

Evangelio: Mat 18,10-20 - La Ascensión del Señor
Por fin ha llegado el momento de la despedida. Jesús
sube al cielo en presencia de sus amigos más íntimos, los
Apóstoles. Su misión terrena había terminado. Ahora son
ellos los que tienen que proseguirla.
Y para ello les despide comunicándoles por fin plenos
poderes para que evangelicen por el mundo entero, y a
los que crean los bauticen en el nombre del Padre, del
Hijo y del Espíritu Santo.
Con pena, pero con esperanza en el promesa del Espíritu
Santo se retiran a sus tareas, hasta que el Espíritu de
Jesús les transforma y les lanza por el mundo.

Oración para cada día de la semana
Señor, Jesús, que ascendiste a los cielos en presencia
de tus discípulos.
Quiero colocarme a su lado para contemplarte subiendo a las alturas, y sobre todo para escucharte los
últimos consejos o consignas que les dejaste.
Sin duda van dirigidas, de alguna manera, a todos los
cristianos, aunque en primer lugar son los apóstoles y
sus sucesores, obispos y sacerdotes los destinatarios
inmediatos.
Señor, me siento urgido a mirar siempre al cielo y a
esperar confiadamente tu ayuda y tu bendición, pero
sobre todo me siento comprometido a ser apóstol y
evangelizador en el mundo que me toca vivir.
Ninguna excusa me aparta, Señor, del camino de la
santidad y del apostolado.
En primer lugar te pido ser apóstol con mi trabajo
bien hecho, santificado y santificador, con mi vida
ordinaria, compuesta ciertamente, como no puede ser
menos, de “pequeas cosas”, pero que quiero hacer
“grandes” por mi ilusin, alegría y amor de Dios.
Señor, que cuantos me vean comportarme o escuchen
mis conversaciones, puedan decir: este lee la vida de
Jesucristo.
Precisamente porque el ambiente social no hace fácil
vivir como un auténtico cristiano, te pido, Señor, fortaleza, valentía y perseverancia en el bien, y sobre
todo la alegría en los labios y en la cara porque Tu
estás en mi corazón.
Es la hora de los valientes, de los santos.
Estas crisis sociales son motivadas, en parte, porque
carecemos de santos.
Cuenta, Señor, con mi pequeñez, pero con mis mejores deseos y propósitos de ser fiel a mi vocación
cristiana.

The Ascension of the Lord

Jesús ha acabado la misión encomendada.
Como en la cruz, nos repite: “Todo está cumplido”. El Padre del cielo puede estar contento. Ha citado a los suyos
en Galilea, antes de subir el cielo.
Hoy es el Día de la Ascensión del Señor. En el fondo, Resurrección, Ascensión y Pentecostés son el mismo misterio. Ascender evoca la cosmología de la época, la cosmología de las esferas. La bóveda del cielo, con su luz y su inmensidad, es
una imagen expresiva de la morada de Dios. Los cristianos sabemos que no se trata de cambiar de lugar. Es el cambio de un
modo de existencia. Jesús acaba su vida terrestre, y vuelve al Padre. Es la fe que profesamos cada domingo: “Subió al cielo
y está sentado a la derecha del Padre”. Estar junto al Padre es estar en el amor del Padre.
Desde aquel día, los seguidores de Jesús conocemos nuestra meta final: estar donde está Jesús. Los
hombres, también hoy, tenemos nostalgia de cielo. “Soy un poquito de tierra que tiene afanes de cielo”
(Pemán).
2. Palabra
La Ascensión completa el círculo de la vida de Jesús. (Como en algunas películas, el final ilumina toda
la historia anterior). Son las últimas palabras de Jesús, el mensaje definitivo. La cosa sucede en Galilea, no en Jerusalén.
Dios se hace presente en el espacio de cada día, no en el templo; no en un lugar, sino en la persona de Jesús resucitado. No
se nos dice su nombre, pero es un monte. Cristo nos descubre su persona en el monte Tabor; su mensaje, en el monte de las
Bienaventuranzas y su misión, en el monte de Galilea.
Jesús se despide de sus apóstoles y les recuerda la síntesis del su Evangelio. Hay una afirmación: él es el Señor, con pleno
poder en el cielo y en la tierra; claro que es el poder del siervo humillado y doliente. Viene luego el mandato: id y haced
discípulos. Y acaba con una promesa: yo estoy con vosotros. Comenzó su vida como Enmanuel-Dios con nosotros y la
acaba prometiendo quedarse con nosotros; acentuando con firmeza: todos los días y hasta el fin del mundo. No puede ser
más contundente.
Y los discípulos quedan marcados. Al llegar a Galilea y ver a Jesús, nadan entre la duda y el gozo, entre la vacilación y la
adoración. Seguían siendo muy humanos. Como tantos hombres y mujeres de hoy: con tantas
ganas de Dios, y tan metidos en la incertidumbre y los porqués. Con todo, los apóstoles pasan del Maestro escuchado al
Señor adorado; todo era muy nuevo, tras la resurrección. Por eso, Jesús les mandó: “Seréis mis testigos”. Es que en ellos
seguían, sí, muchas dudas, pero les acompañaba una garantía segura: “Estoy con vosotros”.
3. Vida
Las Ascensión del Señor nos colma de esperanza. Si Cristo, que es la cabeza, entra en el cielo, ¿qué otra cosa podemos esperar los que somos miembros de su cuerpo? Jesús nos abre camino para el cielo. Lo decimos de los nuestros que se nos
van: “Se fue a la casa del Padre”. Por la muerte, volvemos al polvo, pero polvo “enamorado, según Quevedo. “Al deshacerse nuestra morada terrenal, adquirimos una mansión eterna en el cielo” canta la liturgia. Con audacia y realismo nos
preguntamos: ¿Pero nos lo creemos? Pues que se note que nos encandilan más los bienes de arriba que las humanas vanidades de riquezas, de deleites, de poderío.
Las palabras de Jesús son terminantes: Id por el mundo, haced discípulos míos, sed mis testigos. Porque aspiramos al cielo
nos comprometemos con la tierra. La misión de la Iglesia es evangelizer (Pablo VI). No podemos quedarnos en el templo
repitiendo rutinariamente las mismas cosas. Jesús nos manda, más que a explicar doctrinas, a hacer discípulos que sean
como él: buenos, sencillos, servidores, prontos a dar la vida por otros, incluso por los enemigos. Cierto que, muchas veces,
nos puede la flaqueza. Pero contamos con una gracia: la presencia indefectible de Jesús. ”Mientras él está allí, sigue estando
con nosotros. Mientras nosotros estamos aquí, podemos estar allí con él” (S. Agustín). No lleva razón Fray Luis: “Cuán pobres, ay, nos dejas”. Aun conociendo nuestra debilidad,
Jesús tiene confianza en nosotros, por eso nos envía.
Finalmente, por un impulso elemental de discípulos de Jesús, también nosotros queremos ascender siempre. Ascender es
crecer, ir hacia arriba. Es huir de lo vulgar, de lo mediocre, de lo frívolo, para llenarnos de ideales, de sueños, de utopías. Es
aspirar a la plenitud humana de la verdad, de la libertad, de la belleza. Sólo en el cielo encontraremos esta plenitud; mientras
tanto, mirar al cielo, donde está Jesús, tira de nosotros hacia lo más noble, lo más humano, lo más divino
