Pregones Theater’s Mainstage Timeline (full scale productions & forum theater plays)

MAINSTAGE is the creative center of Pregones’
ensemble, a multigenerational network of master,
mid-career, and emerging Latino artists working in and out of a fully-equipped theater facility
in the South Bronx. This evolving team includes
actors, dancers, singers, musicians, writers, directors, designers, and technicians. Their primary
output is an award-winning repertory of original
plays and musicals presented in Spanish, English,
or both. The program has close to 70 premieres
to its credit since 1979, including workshops,
forum theater plays, and full scale productions
(see Timeline).
PRESENTING builds on our longtime commitment
to showcase the work of other performing artists,
both Latino and of diverse cultural background.
Dating back to the 1980s, its history includes two
editions of Teatro Festival Internacional, curated
and run by Pregones and co-presented at various
venues throughout NYC; twelve years at the helm
of La Ruta Panorámica, then the only Latino arts
presenting network in the North East; and launch
of three increasingly popular series: Family Fun,
March Is Music, and Dancin’ In Da Bronx.
At Pregones, EDUCATION is all about lifelong arts
learning and interaction with professional artists.
The program serves youth and adults through
on-site and off-site live performances, dialogues,
and hands-on training. Multiple-week residencies
and workshops are designed in partnership with
and conducted at schools and senior centers in
The Bronx, East Harlem, and Upper Manhattan.
Activities are grouped under the rubric Pregones
In Motion to signal a dynamic approach to arts
education. Interactive forum theater plays based
on the Boal technique, specially-priced matinees,
mentorships, internships, teacher trainings, and
projects with cultural affinity groups round out
educational offerings.
TOURING takes Pregones’ ensemble to the heart of
the communities it lives for, throughout NYC and
beyond. We started out as an touring company
and to this day keep our costumes pressed, trunks
and suitcases ready, and travel shoes on. Summer
Stage, our popular season kick-off, has toured
metropolitan NY, NJ, and CT for the past eleven
years, under the auspices of the JPMorgan Chase
Summer Arts Series. The free tour reaches largely
Latino audiences and imparts valuable arts presentation skills to local hosts. Regional, national,
and international engagements range in scope
and duration, from single performances or weeklong artistic residencies to multiple-month and
multiple-year collaborations.
Credits include numerous partnerships including
The Annenberg Challenge and Elders Share The
Arts, and co-authorship of the NYC Department
of Education’s Blueprint for Teaching and Learning
in Theater.
With close to 1,000 touring credits in 20 countries,
memorable benchmarks include The Red Rose at
then newly renovated Teatro de la Universidad de
Puerto Rico, and El bolero fue mi ruina at Vingtième
Theatre in Paris, France.
Pregones’ stage works are known for their distinctive visual and rhythmic character, for the artful
integration of musical elements, and for mining
contemporary themes like Puerto Rican/Latino
migration and popular culture. Research, rescue,
and adaptation of literary and extra-literary texts
and related materials are part of the ensemble’s
acclaimed methodology.
Among the more than 200 artists presented are:
Ballets de San Juan (PR), John Santos & Machete
Ensemble (CA), Junebug Productions (LA), Astrid
Hadad (Mexico), La Troppa (Chile), Yuyachkani
(Peru), and Los Pleneros de la 21 (PR/NY), to name
but a few. Since the 2005 inauguration of the new
Pregones Theater, we also team up with artists
and curators to show selected painting, mosaic,
print, and photography exhibits.
