1. INTRODUCTION
In 1862, during the government of President Bernardo Berro, Uruguay adopted the decimal
currency system. To adapt postage rates to the new monetary denominations, the Postal
Authorities issued in 1864 the stamps known as "Escuditos" (Coat of Arms) which were printed
in Montevideo by Mége & Willems employing a lithographic stone engraving system. The
stamps were issued with four values (6, 8, 10 and 12 centesimos) and were the first stamps
Uruguayan stamps containing the inscription "REPUBLICA ORIENTAL". On January 1st. 1866
they were surcharged with new values and officially used for only 10 days.
Each value has seven basic types stamp obtained from the original design, arranged in a
horizontal strip, which was applied in 8 successive transports thus forming a panel of 56 stamps.
This panel appears 4 times in the plate (two upper and two lower) for a total of 224 stamps.
On the 8 centesimos green value, the upper right panel was placed upside down, which
determined the formation of horizontal and vertical “tete-beche” pairs. There is no separation
between panels on this plate.
Two complete sheets of the 6 centesimos pink value are known, and from them we can
determine a separation of 8.7 mm. between left and right panes and 9.4 mm. between upper and
lower panels.
In the case of the plates of 12 centesimos blue stamps, only one piece is known containing
stamps from two horizontal panels allowing to determine the gap between them in 9.8 mm.
Multiples of the 10 centesimos yellow stamp are known showing spacing, however since no
interpanel items are known, its width cannot be determined.
In this study the stamps are numbered on each panel from 1 to 56 starting from the upper left
corner. Many stamps on the same position on different panels show differences; therefore in
order to identify them a full sheet numbering is used. Again the number 1 is assigned the upperleft stamp; increasing to the right and down, and the stamp at the lower right corner ends with
number 224.

This study describes the subtypes caused by transport defects found while studying items in my
collection, and in many cases verifying their position in pieces from other collections. The
shifting of the stamps in different rows on the left edge of the panel is also studied. This
particular shift occurs in some rows of panels of different values and is used as a tool to locate
the position on the panel of some small items.
2. SUBTYPES IN THIS ISSUE
The first Uruguayan stamps were printed lithographically by Mr. Luciano Mége and exhibit a
careful technical execution, which is reflected in the lack of transport varieties as both Mr. Fita
and Mr. Gelabert have described in different published articles. In March 1860 Mr. Mége dies,
and stamps printed after that date (" Thick figures Sun” issued in 1861 and "Escuditos" in 1864),
show lower quality. In the "Escuditos" case, the transport errors originate different subtypes:
Subtypes I - are caused by errors in the transport of the strip with the 7 major types, and are
repeated on each panel. For its location is only necessary to know the position number (1 to 56).
Subtypes II - are caused by errors in the transport of the 56 stamps panel, and can only be seen
in some of them, therefore to determine its location we need the position number on the sheet (1
to 224).
Subtypes III - are found on very few stamps and its position cannot be determined due to the
lack of multiples containing them. Perhaps its origin is due to retouches of the original stone
needed to fix defects from usage.
An example is found on the 12 centesimos with a subtype showing a major retouch of the coat of
arms. Another example is seen on the 6 centesimos value, described as defective transport by
Mr. Gelabert and compressed transports in an article found in the Philatelic Journal of Great
Britain.

2.1. Subtypes in the 6 centesimos value
Subtype 1A
This subtype was described by Mr. Lee and Mr. Carcavallo; these stamps have the base of BL in
REPUBLICA defective and a small colored dot inside OR of ORIENTAL. It can be found at
position 1 on each panel of 56 stamps (Figure 1).
Subtype 1B
Curved outer edge of the A in REPUBLICA (Figure 2). This subtype is shown on a vertical pair
from my collection from the lower left corner of the panel. Corresponds to position 43 in each
panel 56 stamps.
Subtype 1C
On a block of 9 surcharges stamps in my collection, a stamp could be seen with the following
characteristics: a dot in the upper outer margin almost in the top left angle, color dot between IM
of CENTESIMOS (Figure 3). This subtype is located at position 36 but only on the upper left
panel of 56 stamps (position 71 in the sheet of 224 stamps).

Subtype 1D
Color entry in the bottom of the L of REPUBLICA causing deformation on its base (Figure 4).
Shown on a surcharged stamp from the panel’s lower left corner, position 50 of each panel 56
stamps.
Subtype 2A
Color dot to the left of the C in CENTESIMOS, two small dots of color between ES in
CENTESIMOS (Figure 5), this second feature is described in Mr. Gelabert and Mr. Ong
collections. Defects are also seen on top of the E and the bottom of the left branch of A of
ORIENTAL. It is found at position 2 on the 56 stamps panel.
Subtype 4A
Large color dot, in some cases a resembling a small line appears in the bottom edge near the
separation line between stamps and just below the left branch of M in CENTESIMOS (Figure 6).
The figure shows a brick-colored block from my collection with this subtype, located at position
32 in the panel of 56 stamps.

Subtype 5A
Great color dot in the outer margin in line with CENTESIMOS (Figure 7). It appears in position
12 and is only found in brick or salmon stamps as shown in the figure from my collection, and in
complete panels from Mr. Ong’s collection brick (top right panel), salmon (upper left panel) and
surcharged brick (lower left panel). Also found in a 9 stamp salmon corner block from the upper
right panel in Mr. Ong’s collection (Figure 8). This subtype is not found on pink or red stamps.
Subtype 5B
Broken upper outer margin in left corner, white dot on dark background over I of
CENTESIMOS, upper end of the right branch of U of REPUBLICA not straight and the number
6 broken on its left branch (Figure 9). The figure shows a light brick stamp from my collection.
This subtype is located at position 26, but only in the lower left pane of 56 stamps, position 159
in the sheet. Only seen in the brick color.
Subtype 6A
This subtype was described by Mr. Lee and Mr. Carcavallo. A white “Y’ could be seen over RI
in ORIENTAL. It is located at position 48 on each panel 56 stamps (Figure 10).
Subtype 6B
Mr. Carcavallo described it as having an irregular color diamond at the top, with an apex
touching the margin next to R in ORIENTAL. Also has two color dots outside the left outer
margin almost in the upper corner. Found at position 55 of the panels but the two features are not
always clearly visible (figure11).
Subtype 6C
Color dot on right margin almost reaching the upper angle, in some cases it can be viewed as a
thickening of the frame. The figures show this subtype in a block of 4 and a block of 10
surcharged stamps from my collection (Figures 12 and 13). Found at position 27 on each 56
stamp panel.

Subtype 7A
This subtype is described by Mr. Lee and Mr. Carcavallo as having a thick white patch to the left
of the O in ORIENTAL and a 1 mm. gap in outer frame over this letter. A small white spot at the
base of the right branch of the A of REPUBLICA is also visible (Figure 14). It is at position 7 of
the panel 56 stamps.
Subtype 7B
It is described by Mr. Lee and Mr. Carcavallo as having a white spot over the R of ORIENTAL.
To the left of the E in REPUBLICA both the white box and the left frame are cut by two colored
lines forming a triangle. This subtype is observed at position 49 on each panel of 56 stamps. In
some cases the white spot is not present or is barely visible; this can be explained by the wear of
the plate during use. On same stamps in my collection with this subtype, the lines are not
forming a triangle as shown in the figure, which can be taken as a new occasional subtype 7Ba
(Figure 15).

2.2. Subtypes in the 8 centesimos value
Subtype 1A
Mr. Carcavallo described is as having a thick colored horizontal line extending from the middle
of the Coat of Arms section containing the ox to the T in ORIENTAL (Figure 16). Found at
position 43 on each panel of 56 stamps.
Subtype 2A
Described in the collections of Mr. Ong and Mr. Gelabert, and found on a stamp in my
collection; the U of REPUBLICA is broken at the bottom of its right branch (Figure 17). The

above mentioned collector claim this subtype is located at position 23 but I could verify this
subtype in a twelve overprint stamp block of my collection, position 51. This subtype is not seen
in other blocks, indicates that is only found in lower right panel, position 219 of the sheet.
Subtype 2B
In the collection of Mr. Ong and Mr. Gelabert this subtype is described as having a color spot
that reaches the inner frame in line with the A of ORIENTAL, and can be seen in dark green
block in my collection (Figure 18). This subtype is located at position 30 as shown in (Figure
19), positions 2-35 from Mr. Ong’s collection (ex Gelabert), as well as in the 56 stamp panel
located on the lower right side the sheet also found in Mr. Ong’s collection. This subtype is not
seen in other blocks from Mr. Ong collection, such as light upper left green panel of 56 stamps,
or the surcharged block corresponding to the lower left panel or top right inverted panel
investment or on the block of 20 stamps with a line from the lower left panel and four lines from
the upper right one. This indicates that this subtype is seen only on stamps from the lower right
panel stamps in position 30, corresponding to position 177 of the sheet.

Subtype 2C
Corresponds to subtype 2A as described by Mr.Carcavallo. Two color dots at the top margin
extending the left frame (Figure 20), it is located at position 44.

Subtype 2Ca
Presents subtype 2C characteristics, and add a color stain covering the M of CENTESIMOS;
white spots and blurred printing in BLICA of REPUBLICA. The Coat of Arms’ bow is a
blurred and a color spot unites the stamps’ body to the external frame in line to the R on
ORIENTAL (Figure 21). Seen in a stamp as well as in a block of 12 from the sheets’ lower
bottom edge in my collection as shown in the figure and which also contains subtype 2B (which
is only seen in the lower right pane, position 177 of the sheet). This subtype is not seen in other
panels, so this subtype is located at position 44 of the right bottom panel of 56 stamps, position
205 of the sheet.
Subtype 2D
Large color line in the outer margin near the lower right corner (Figure 22). It can be seen in a
block in my collection as shown in the figure and in the dark green block (Figure 23), positions
2-35 from Mr. Ong’s collection (ex Gelabert), belonging to the panel of 56 stamps located in the
lower right side of the sheet. This subtype cannot be viewed in other blocks and is seen only in
the lower right panel at position 23; position 163 of the sheet.

Subtype 3A
Color dot almost touching the outer margin above the L of REPUBLICA. This subtype can be
seen in a block in my collection alongside subtype 2A (position 44), indicating that this subtype

is at position 45 (Figure 24). Also seen in a block from Mr. Ong’s collection from the upper left
quadrant (this block has a portion of the top panel and a line from the lower left panel), position
87 of the sheet. However it is not seen in the nine-block lower left darl green corner block
present in Mr. Ong’s collection, ruling out that this subtype is also found at position 199 of the
sheet. This indicates can be found only at position 45 of the top left panel; position 87 of the
sheet. I did not find blocks to verify its existence on the inverted (top right) and lower right
panels.
Subtype 3Aa
Large dot color on the outer margin thickening it over IC of REPUBLICA, color spot covering
the top and the bottom of the L (Figure 25). This subtype is seen on a stamp, a surcharged block
and a surcharged block of 12 stamps types 2-3-4 from the sheets’s bottom edge in my collection
as shown in the figure, which also contains subtype 2B (this subtype is seen only in the lower
right panel, position 177 of the sheet). From this last block this subtype can be placed at position
45 of the panel 56 stamps. These features cannot be seen in a block having a portion of the left
upper panel and a line from the lower panel line, nor in the nine-block lower left corner dark
green block, both from Mr. Ong’s collection, ruling out that this subtype is found in these panels.
Therefore this subtype is only at position 45 of the lower right pane; position 206 of the sheet.

Subtype 4A
This subtype was described by Mr. Carcavallo as having a small color slash at the top marging
over the left of the L on REPUBLICA (Figure 26). It is located at position 32 of the panel of 56
stamps.
Subtype 4B
This subtype is described in the collections of Mr. Gelabert and Mr. Ong as a having a color dot
in the outer right frame in line with the T of ORIENTAL (Figure 27). It can be seen in the dark
green block (Figure 27), positions 2-35 from Mr. Ong’s collection (ex Gelabert), which belongs
to the lower right pane of 56 stamps. This subtype cannot be found in other blocks and is
therefore only located at the lower right panel in position 18; position 151 of the sheet.
Subtype 5A
White spot underneath and slightly to the left of the 0 in the figure (Figure 28). This subtype is
seen in the light green top left panel block as shown in the figure and the dark green block
positions 2-35, both in Mr. Ong’s collection (ex Gelabert). Also seen in the block of 64 stamps
with 8 “tete-beche”; one of the most important pieces of this issue found in the catalog from
Soler & Llach February 4, 1999 auction. This subtype is located in all four panels of 56 stamps,
at position 5.

It is described by Mr. Carcavallo as having two color dots at the top margin, over the O of
ORIENTAL (Figure 29). Found at position 6 on the 56 stamps panel.

Subtype 6B
In Mr. Ong’s collection is described as having a white line exiting downward from an angle to
the T of ORIENTAL (Figure 30). This subtype is located at position 20, which is confirmed by
two blocks from Mr. Ong’s collection (ex Gelabert), one light green (Figure 31), positions 1-6,
8-13, 15-20, 22-27, 29-34, 36-41 and 43-48 from the upper left panel since the sheet’s corner is
visible and the other dark green (Figure 32) positions 2-35 from the lower right panel since the
sheet’s edge is also visible at the right and the other possible right panel is inverted.
Subtypes 7A and 7B
In a couple horizontal “tête-bêche” in my collection (Figure 33) a color dot is seen on the outer
edge in line with the U of REPUBLICA in one of the stamps and in the other a small diagonal
color line appears outside out the outer frame in line with the B of REPUBLICA. In a block of 8
stamps with two “tête-bêche” pairs (Figure 34) from Mr. Ong’s collection (ex Gelabert) you can
see the same features in one of them. However on another “tête-bêche” pair from my collection
(formerly Paez) (Figure 35) the color dot is in one of the stamps, but the other does not have the
little colored line near the B.
In the block positions 2-35 from Mr. Ong’s collection (ex Gelabert) the color dot is also seen on
the outer edge in line with the U on the stamp found at position 35 (Figure 36). This places this

subtype (we call it 7A) in this position and therefore the subtype with small colored line (called
7B) must be at position 28 which is the corresponding position for a horizontal “tête-bêche” pair.
However, in position 28 of the block described above this feature does not appear.
Is essential to observe the block with two horizontal “tête-bêche” pairs in my collection
(formerly Paez) (Figure 37), in this block the subtype 7A is seen on two stamps placed in a
diagonal position, confirming this subtype in position 35, and subtype 7B which is located at
position 28 is only found in one stamp, thus indicating that this subtype is located only in one of
the panels of 56 stamps. The 64 stamps block with 8 “tête-bêche” from Soler & Llach auction
catalog (Figure 38) shows that subtype 7B is located only in the top left panel and that the
inverted panel does not have this subtype, having only subtype 7A. Therefore subtype 7A is
located at position 35 on all panels and 7B at position 28 only on the upper left panel of 56
stamps, position 49 on the sheet of 224 stamps.

Subtype 7C
This subtype is characterized by having color dots within AL of ORIENTAL. These dots can be
very intense in dark green stamps and even cover almost completely the L. This subtype is seen
in some stamps in my collection (Figure 39) and a lower right corner block from Mr. Ong’s
collection, located at position 49 (Figure 40).
A block of six stamps from the sheet’s center in my collection (ex Paez) with two horizontal and
one vertical “tête-bêche” pairs (Figure 41) also has this subtype and since it is light green the
dots do not completely cover the L. This block’s positions are 49-14 (inverted), 56-7 (inverted)
and 7-1, and confirms position 49 for this subtype.

Subtype 7D
It is characterized by a color dot in the left outer margin in line with EP of REPUBLICA (Figure
42). In the figure three blocks from HR Harmer’s (April 27, 2007) auction, from Dr. Gonzalo
Fernandez collection can be seen, which have subtype 7C, position 49, and below this the stamps
with the described characteristic. This indicates that this subtype is at position 56. Two of the
paintings of the figure are from the sheet’s corner and thus belong to the lower right panel. This
subtype is not seen in stamps in position 56 of the pieces in my collection and Mr. Ong’s
collection, so this subtype only exists at position 56 in the lower right panel; position 224 of the
sheet.

2.3. Subtypes in the 10 centesimos value
Subtype 2A
It is described by Mr. Lee & Mr. Carcavallo as having a color stripe entering the bottom of the
stamp, from the lower left corner of the outer frame (Figure 43). Mr. Lee adds to the description
a little line in the N of CENTESIMOS. Found at position 37 in the panel of 56 stamps.
Subtype 2B
White line comes down from the upper right quadrant passing through IENT of ORIENTAL
(Figure 44). This can be seen in a block of 28 stamps from Mr. Britz’s collection, belonging to
the upper right panel. It is located on position 2 in the 56 stamp panel. This feature is not seen in
any of the blocks from Mr. Ong’s collection, therefore I think that only exists at position 9 of the
sheet (position 2 of the upper right panel).
Subtype 2C
In this subtype the top portion of the first S of CENTESIMOS in not visible, and white spots
appear inside and up ORIEN of ORIENTAL (Figure 45). This can be seen in single stamps from
Mr. Gelabert and Mr. Ong collections, and also in the 28 stamp block 28 stamps in Mr. Britz
collection. It is found at position 23. Not seen in any of the blocks in Mr. Ong’s collection,
therefore I think that only is present at position 51 of the sheet (position 23 of the top right
panel).

Subtype 3A
White line travels down through the bottom of the stamp, entering on the left edge a little above
the white background containing the value (Figure 46). This can be seen in block of 28 stamps
belonging to Mr. Britz, and is located at position 17 of the panel of 56 stamps. You do not see
this feature in any of the blocks found in Mr. Ong’s collection, therefore looks like only is visible
at position 38 of the sheet (position 17 of the top right panel).

Subtype 3B
Color dot almost in the top left corner touching the body of the stamp without touching the top
outer edge (Figure 47). This feature is observed in various items in Mr. Ong’s collection, and is
located at position 24 of the panel of 56 stamps.
Subtype 3Ba
It has the features of subtype 3B, but also a white line running almost vertically through the
stamp, down from the top edge near the upper left corner and going through REPUB of
REPUBLICA and the number 10 (Figure 46). This line is a continuation of the one seen in
subtype 3A. This feature can be seen in Mr. Britz’s block of 28 stamps and is located at position
24 of the panel 56 stamps. Not seen in any of the blocks in Mr. Ong’s collection, thus existing
only at position 52 of the sheet (position 24 of the top right panel).
Subtype 4A
This subtype is described by Mr. Lee & Mr. Carcavallo as having a white spot on the body of the
stamp over the last S of CENTESIMOS (Figure 48). Position 11 in the panel of 56 stamps.

Subtype 6A
White line travels downwards to the left in a diagonal manner from the upper outer frame and
crosses the top part of OR of ORIENTAL (Figure 49). It can be seen in an ocher block in my
collection as well as on the panel of 56 stamps in Mr. Ong’s collection at position 34. This is
presumably the top left panel, since this subtype cannot be viewed neither in a block of 28 panel
stamps from the lower left panel or in the 12 stamps block from a lower panel both in Mr. Ong’s
collection. Therefore this subtype is located at position 34 of the top left panel, position 62 of the
sheet.

Subtype 7A
Low diagonal color stain travels from the outer edge almost covering EN in ORIENTAL and
crosses the stamp (Figure 50). This can be seen on a surcharged stamp in my collection and in a

2.4. Subtypes in the 12 centesimos value
Subtype 1A
This subtype was described by Mr. Lee & Mr. Carcavallo as thickening in the left frame in line
with the top of I in ORIENTAL plus a tiny color dot over the head of I and in the upper right
side of N in ORIENTAL. It also has a white spot on the value to the left of R in REPUBLICA
and a small break in the left outer frame in line with the E in REPUBLICA (Figure 51). It is
found at position 22 on each panel of 56 stamps. In some stamps the white spot to the left of the
R of REPUBLICA is not visible, possibly due to plate wear, therefore creating a new subtype
1Aa which is rarer.
Subtype 1B
It was also described by Mr. Lee & Mr. Carcavallo. This subtype has the features mentioned
above but adds an important retouch on the central portion, shield and garland. The most
prominent distinction is in the strong lines separating the two left quarters left of the Coat of
Arms (Figure 52). It is also located at position 22. This subtype is very hard to find and is not
seen in the large blocks and panels of 56 stamps from the collections I studied, thus indicating
that originates in plate retouching due to wear and use.

Subtype 1C
In a stamp of my collection a color dot is observed touching the top of the right branch of the N
in ORIENTAL (Figure 53). This feature can be seen in a light blue lower left panel of 56 stamps,
a slate blue block and a blue panel of 56 surcharged stamps shown in the figure, all from Mr.
Ong’s collection. This subtype is located at position 43 of the panel of 56 stamps.
Subtype 1D
White line travels through the stamp at the bottom of the white background containing the value
and barely going up (Figure 54). This continues on subtype 2C. Shown in the light blue panel
from Mr. Ong’s collection, as shown in the figure, and in one stamp in my collection. Located at
position 8, but only at the bottom left panel of 56 stamps, position 127 of the sheet.
Subtype 1E
Two small white horizontal lines, one crossing the A of REPUBLICA and O of ORIENTAL,
while the second one goes through RI of ORIENTAL leaving from the stamps’s right edge
(Figure 55). It appears in two surcharged sheet corner blocks loaded from my collection (ex
Paez) that are shown in the figure, and is located at position 15, but only at the top left panel,
position 29 in the sheet.

Subtype 2A
A thick colored stain enters at the base of the right branch of the A of REPUBLICA (Figure 56).
This subtype is described in the collections of Mr. Gelabert and Mr. Ong, and is located at
position 51 of the panel of 56 stamps.
Subtype 2B
Slightly tilted white goes right and up crossing the stamp’s bottom (Figure 57). This line
continues in the next stamp (see subtype 3B). This subtype is located at position 2, as shown in
the figure of a 21 stamps sheet corner block from Mr. Ong’s collection, but only in the upper left
panel of the sheet. This subtype is very similar to subtype 2C, however the line enters left and
below the blank space containing the value in line with the N and leaves touching the S of
CENTESIMOS.
Subtype 2C
White line travels through the botom of the stamp, below the white background containing the
value and barely going up (Figure 54). This line is a continuation of the one seen in subtype 1D.

Subtype 3A
Color stripe on the upper right corner outside the outer frame (Figure 58). This subtype is
described by Dr. Gonzalo Fernandez in his collection and is located at position 3 of the panel of
56 stamps.
Subtype 3Aa
In some stamps in my collection, on the panel of 56 surcharged stamps shown in the figure and
in a block from Mr. Ong’s collection the same characteristics as subtype 3A can be seen, but
adding a color dot in the left outer margin almost in the upper left angle (Fig. 59). This subtype is
seen only in the upper right panel, sheet’s position 10.
Subtype 3B
Color stripe as in subtype 3A, but also having a white line tilted slightly moving upwards to the
right and crossing the stamp at the bottom (Figure 60) which is the continuation of the line found
at subtype 2A, but located slightly higher and continues in the next stamp, (see subtype 4D
Figure 57). This subtype is shown in the figure on a surcharged stamp from my collection and is
located at position 3, but only in the upper left panel therefore also position 3 of the 224 stamps
sheet.

Subtype 3C
Corresponds to subtype 3A as described by Mr. Lee and Mr. Carcavallo; a horizontal color stripe

Subtype 3D
White tilted line travels slightly down to the right through the stamp in line with the white
background containing the value and ends a little below the cut present on the right outer frame
in stamps of this type (Figure 62). Can be seen in the 21 stamps sheet corner block 21 from Mr.
Ong’s collection and is located at position 10 but only in the upper left panel of the sheet of 224
stamps, at position 17.
Subtype 3E
White line crosses from above the C of REPUBLICA (Figure 63). This subtype was described in
Dr. Gonzalo Fernandez collection and can be seen in a light blue panel in Mr. Ong’s collection
and on a surcharged cover in my collection (ex Paez) as shown in the figure. It is located at
position 17, but only in the lower left panel, position 143 of the sheet.
Subtype 4A
Small color dot in outer margin close to MO of CENTESIMOS, almost touching the dividing
line with the next stamp (Figure 64). This figure shows a surcharged block from Mr. Ong’s
collection and is located at position 25 in the panel of 56 stamps.

Subtype 4Ba
The same features as subtype 4B, but adding a white spot near the upper right corner and a white
line travelling upwards just above the white background containing the value, starting just below
the R in REPUBLICA and ending between AL in ORIENTAL (Figure 67). It is also found at
position 39. I could not see in any of the panels of 56 stamps from Mr. Ong’s collection;
indicating that only is present look at the top left panel, position 74 of the sheet of 224 stamps.
Subtype 4C
This subtype was described by Mr. Carcavallo; it has a small tilted horizontal line coming from
the left side of the first E of CENTESIMOS, not always clearly visible, a round dot leaves the
dark background on over the 2 of the value and a second color dot, touching the background at
the top of the right branch of the A in REPUBLICA (Figure 68). This subtype is located at
position 53 in the panel 56 stamps.
Subtype 4D
White line slightly tilted travels up through the stamp’s bottom (Figure 57). It is the continuation
of the line of subtype 3B, located a little higher. This subtype is found at position 4 but only in
the upper left panel, also position 4 of the sheet 224 stamps.

Subtype 4E
Color dot in outer frame over IC of REPUBLICA (Figure 69), in some cases a cut in the outer
edge to the left of the value is also present. It could be seen in two stamps in my collection, in the
light blue panel of 56 stamps from Mr. Ong’s collection, but not on the slate blue block from the
same collection, thus indicating that it is a subtype not constant. Not seen in other panels and
blocks that I have studied, it is located at position 46 but only in the lower left panel, position
200 of the sheet.
Subtype 4F
White line enters below the value and descends slowly, becoming less and less visible (Figure
70), this line is the continuation of the one found in subtype 3D. It also features a white line
coming down almost vertically from the Coat of Arms and going through the T of
CENTESIMOS. The figure shows this subtype in a block of 21 stamps from Mr. Ong’s
collection corresponding to the upper left panel. It is located at position 11 but only in the upper
left panel, position 18 of the 224 stamps sheet.

Subtype 4G
Three white dots in the color background between the A of REPUBLICA and the O of
ORIENTAL (Figure 71). Figure 71 shows it in a surcharged block from of my collection
surcharged shown in the figure and in the dark blue block of 55 stamps from Mr. Ong
corresponding to the bottom right panel. It is located at position 18 of the panel of 56 stamps, but
I could not find it in other items I studied, therefore it is only found in the lower right panel, at
position 151 of the sheet.
Subtype 5A
White line crosses the stamp from the O of ORIENTAL (Figures 72, 73 and 74), this line
continues in the next stamp (see subtype 6B). Also features a second diagonal line starting a little
above the lower left corner; traveling through C of CENTESIMOS and ending at the Coat of
Arms. This subtype is located at position 26 but only in the upper right panel, position 54 of the
sheet.
Subtype 5B
Two white lines cross the stamp, one almost horizontal in line with the U of REPUBLICA and
the E of ORIENTAL, and the other just tilted a little below, descending down to the right

line coming out of the left edge, ends at the R of REPUBLICA. This subtype is located at

Subtype 5E
In my collection, a type 5 stamp has a white line that begins in line to the R of REPUBLICA
crossing the stamp almost horizontally (Figure 78). This line is a continuation of the one
described in subtype 4Ba and therefore is located at position 40. I could not see in any of the 56
stamps panels in Mr. Ong’s collection, indicating that only appears at the upper left panel of 56
stamps; position 75 of the sheet.
Subtype 5F
Small white line between the A and the O of REPUBLICA ORIENTAL begins at the upper
outer edge travelling diagonally ending at the top of the O (Figure 79). Seen in a block of 54 blue
stamps from Mr. Ong’s collection as well as in a surcharged block in my collection (ex Paez) as
shown in the figure. It is located at position 40 but only the lower right panel, position 194 of the
sheet.
Subtype 5G
Thin white line travels down the Coat of Arms through AL of ORIENTAL, crosses the last S of
CENTESIMOS and exits from the outer edge a little above the lower right corner. Another thin

line enters at the left, descending diagonally cutting the number 12 at the top (Figure 80). Seen

Subtype 6 A
White line travels through the stamp just below the top edge (Fig. 81). This line continues on the
next stamp (see subtype 7 A). The figure shows it in the blue block of 54 stamps from Mr. Ong’s
collection and is located at position 13, but only in the lower right panel, position 139 of the
sheet.
Subtype 6B
White spot after A of REPUBLICA and white line just bowed coming down to the right and
running into the top of subtype 5A stamp (Figures 72, 73 and 82). It is located at position 27, but
only in the upper right panel, position 55 of the sheet.
Subtype 6C
Two white lines cross the stamp, one almost horizontally in line with the U of REPUBLICA and
E of ORIENTAL and the other a little below, just tilted down to the right (Figure 83). These two
lines are the continuation of those from subtype 5B (Figures 72 and 73). This subtype is located
at position 34, but only in the upper right panel, position 69 of the sheet.

Subtype 6E
Large color dot almost touches the dividing line with the type 5 stamp, in line with the stamp’s
denomination (Figure 84). The image shows it in a lower margin block from collection; this
subtype is located at position 48. Also seen in the panel of 56 light blue stamps (Figure 85), but
not on the slate blue block; both from Mr. Ong’s collection and from the lower left panel. It does
not appear in other blocks and panels located elsewhere on the sheet, thus this subtype is not
constant and is located at position 48 but only in the lower left panel, position 202 of the sheet.
Subtype 6F
Colored spots on the bottom of the C of REPUBLICA and white dot on the Coat of Arms border
just below the A of REPUBLICA (Figure 86). This subtype is seen in the upper right pane of 56
surcharged stamps from Mr. Ong’s collection and a block in my collection as shown in the

image. It is not seen in other major blocs I’ve studied, so this subtype is located at position 48,
but only in the upper right panel, position 97 of the sheet.
Subtype 7A
White line crosses the top of the stamp almost horizontally with a small drop to the right (Figure
87), being a continuation of the line found in subtype 6A (Figure 81). This subtype is located at
position 14, but only in the lower right panel, position 140 of the sheet.
Subtype 7B
White line crosses the stamp almost vertically on the left side, starting almost at the top left
corner (Figure 88), going to the next stamp below (see subtype 7C). This subtype was described
in the collections of Mr. Gelabert and Mr. Ong. The figure shows a panel of 56 stamps and a
block of 18 stamps, both surcharged from Mr. Ong’s collection. It is found at position 28, but
only in the upper right panel; position 56 of the sheet.
Subtype 7C
White line crosses the stamp almost vertically on the left side (Figure 88). This line is a
continuation of the one seen in subtype 7B but is located further to the right and continues on the
next stamp below (see subtype 7D). It is located at position 35, but only in the upper right panel,
position 70 of the sheet.

Subtype 7D
White line passes almost vertically on the left side but close to the middle of the stamp, and
disappears before reaching the white background containing the word CENTESIMOS (Figure
88). This line is a continuation of the one seen in subtypes 7B and 7C. Located at position 42,
but only in the upper right panel, position 84 of the sheet.
The stamps featuring white lines are described in 24 subtypes on the 12 centesimos stamp,
however I could not find them in the 6 and 8 centesimos ones and only in very few cases in the
10 centesimos. This study describes four subtypes of this value with white lines. The most
important pieces known of this stamp are found in Mr. Ong’s collection allowing a partial
reconstruction of the 224 stamps sheet, showing the positions of the main subtypes with white
line, which are not repeated in all panels (Figure 89).

3. STRETCH ON THE PANEL’S ROWS
In the 56 stamps panel with a value of 6 centesimos and surcharged 20 in my collection, shown
in the figure, you can see that the 8 rows of stamps are well aligned on the right side, but on the
left side this alignment is not accurate and there is a shift to the left (Figure 90). Thus there is a
stretching of the rows as you go down on the panel.
Looking closely the type 1 stamps column, you see that there is a notorious stretch going from
row 3 to 4 (Figure 91), and row 6 to 7 (Figure 92). Between stamps at positions 15 and 22 (start
of rows 3 and 4) the displacement is 1 mm. (Figure 91), while on the stamps in position 36 and
43 (start of rows 6 and 7) the offset is greater and measures 1.2 mm. (Figure 92). This
observation is very useful since it allows to determine a block’s position in the panel of 56
stamps, as shown in a block of 9 stamps in my collection (Figure 93).
Observing the stamps’ displacement along the row we see that increases gradually from right to
left, this is clearly seen in the figures with overlapped rows (Figures 94 and 95).

This suggests the 7 stamps transfer block does not coincide perfectly between the lines. These
differences may be due to a break in the transfer block or by stretching of the wet the paper used
in the transfer. I think this latter explanation is correct since the phase shift corrects itself
gradually from left to right and I could not see a jump to explain a breakdown of the transfer
block between these two lines.

For the 8 centesimos stamp, complete panels of 56 stamps are not known, but Figure 96 shows
one block with the panel’s top part and a second one surcharged from the bottom part, both from
Mr. Ong’s collection. Again, we observe a shifting, but in this case only between lines 7 and 8 of
the panel (Figure 96).
This displacement is again produced by a stretch on the transfer block observing a decrease of
the shift from type 1 to 7 (Figure 97).
Only one complete panel of the 10 centesimos stamp is known, belonging to Mr. Ong and shown
in Figure 98. In this case there are offsets between the lines 1-2, 4-5 and 7-8.
Complete panels are known of the 12 centesimos stamp. Figure 10 shows one of surcharged 5
from the collection of Mr. Ong. Again one can see gap between the lines, in this case to the lines
1-2, 2-3 and 6-7 (Figure 99).

1. Introducción
En 1862, durante el gobierno del Presidente Bernardo Berro, Uruguay adoptó el sistema
monetario decimal. Para adaptar los franqueos a este sistema monetario, en 1864 se emiten los
sellos conocidos como “Escuditos”, los cuales fueron impresos en Montevideo por Mége &
Willems mediante sistema litográfico grabado en piedra. Esta emisión de sellos en cuatro valores
(6, 8, 10 and 12 centésimos) fueron los primeros sellos uruguayos impresos en que figura
"República Oriental". Los mismos fueron sobrecargados con nuevos valores para su uso en 1866
y su validez fue de solo 10 días.
Cada valor tiene siete tipos básicos obtenidos a partir del cuño original, y dispuestos en una tira
horizontal, la cual se aplicó en 8 transportes sucesivos formando así un panel de 56 sellos. Este
panel aparece 4 veces en la plancha (dos superiores y dos inferiores) dando un total de 224
sellos.
En el valor de 8 centésimos, de color verde, el panel superior derecho fue colocado invertido, lo
cual determinó la formación de parejas tête-bêche horizontales con el panel superior izquierdo, y
verticales con el inferior derecho. La plancha de este valor no tiene separación entre los paneles.
Del valor 6 centésimos, color rosa, se conocen dos planchas completas, y se puede determinar
una separación de 8,7 mm entre los paneles de la derecha e izquierda, y 9,4 mm ente los paneles
superior e inferior. En el caso de las planchas de 12 centésimos (azul), solo se conoce una pieza
interpanel que permite determinar en 9,8 mm la separación entre los paneles de la derecha e
izquierda. En las planchas de 10 centésimos (amarillo) también existe separación como se puede
apreciar en algunas piezas, pero no existen bloques interpanel que permitan medirla
exactamente.
En este estudio se numeran los sellos en el panel del 1 al 56 comenzando por el superior
izquierdo. Muchos sellos presentan diferencias en la misma posición de los cuatro paneles y por
lo tanto se ubican numerando la hoja completa. Nuevamente se adjudica al sello superior
izquierdo el número 1 y se aumenta la numeración hacia la derecha y abajo sin diferenciar los
paneles, por lo cual quedan filas de 14 sellos, y termina con el sello número 224 en la esquina
inferior derecha.
En el presente estudio se describen los subtipos originados por defectos de transporte que he
podido encontrar observando sellos y piezas de mi colección, y en muchos casos verificando su

posición en piezas de otras colecciones. Se describe además el corrimiento de los sellos en
diferentes filas en el borde izquierdo del panel. Este corrimiento que particularmente se da en
algunas filas de los paneles de los distintos valores, ayuda a ubicar la posición en el panel de
algunas pequeñas piezas.
2. Subtipos en esta emisión
Las primeras emisiones postales de Uruguay impresas litográficamente por el Sr. Luciano Mége
se caracterizan por su esmerada ejecución técnica, lo cual se refleja en la escasez de variedades
de transporte como lo han destacado Fita y Gelabert en diferentes artículos. En marzo de 1860
fallece el Sr. Luciano Mége, y las impresiones posteriores a esa fecha revelan una menor calidad
en los litógrafos que lo sucedieron y realizaron las emisiones “Soles, cifras gruesas” en 1861 y
“Escuditos” en 1864.
En el caso de la emisión “Escuditos” los errores de transporte nos originan diferentes tipos de
subtipos:
Subtipos I – son originados por errores en el transporte de la tira con los 7 tipos principales, estos
se repiten en cada panel de 56 sellos. Para su ubicación es necesario el número de posición en el
panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipos II - son originados por errores en el transporte del panel de 56 sellos, estos solo se
pueden ver en alguno de los 4 paneles y por lo tanto para su ubicación es necesario el número de
posición en la hoja de 224 sellos.
Subtipos III – solo se encuentran muy pocos sellos con estos subtipos y no es posible determinar
su posición por no tener piezas que los contengan. Posiblemente su origen son retoques en la
piedra original, necesarios por el desgaste de la misma con el uso. Un ejemplo de ellos son el
subtipo del valor 12 centésimos en que se ve un importante retoque en el escudo. Otro ejemplo
son, para el valor 6 centésimos, los descriptos como transportes defectuosos por Gelabert y como
transporte comprimidos en un artículo del Philatelic Journal of Great Britain.

2.1. Subtipos en el valor 6 centésimos
Subtipo 1 A
Este subtipo fue descrito por Lee y Carcavallo, base de las letras B y L de REPUBLICA son
defectuosas, pequeño punto de color dentro de las letras OR de ORIENTAL. Se puede ver en la
posición 1 de cada panel de 56 sellos (Figura 1).
Subtipo 1B
Borde externo curvo sobre la A de REPUBLICA (Figura 2). En la figura se muestra este subtipo
en una pareja vertical de mi colección, esquina inferior izquierda del panel. Corresponde a la
posición 43 de cada panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 1C
Se puede ver en un bloque de 9 sellos sobrecargados de mi colección, un sello con las siguientes
características: un punto en el margen externo superior casi en el ángulo superior izquierdo, y
punto de color entre IM de CENTESIMOS (Figura 3). Este subtipo se ubica en la posición 36
pero solo se ve en el panel superior izquierdo de 56 sellos, posición 71 de la hoja de 224 sellos.
Subtipo 1D
Entrada de color en la parte inferior de la L de REPUBLICA causando una deformación en la
base (Figura 4). Se muestra en un sello sobrecargado esquina inferior izquierda del panel,
ubicándose en la posición 50 de cada panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 2 A
Punto de color en base a la izquierda de la C de CENTESIMOS y dos pequeños puntos de color
entre ES también de CENTESIMOS (Figura 5), esta última característica esta descrita en la
colección de Gelabert y de Ong. También se observan defectos en la parte superior de la E y la
parte inferior de la rama izquierda de la A de ORIENTAL. Se ubica en la posición 2 del panel de
56 sellos.
Subtipo 4 A
Importante punto de color alargado, en algunos casos parece una pequeña línea, se ve en el borde
de abajo muy cerca de la línea de separación de los sellos y justo debajo de la rama izquierda de

la M de CENTESIMOS (Figura 6). En la figura se muestra un cuadro color ladrillo de mi
colección con este subtipo, que se ubica en la posición 32 del panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 5 A
Gran punto de color en el margen exterior izquierdo a la altura de la palabra CENTESIMOS
(Figura 7). Se ubica en la posición 12 y solo se encuentra en el color ladrillo o salmón. Puede
verse en un cuadro color ladrillo de mi colección que se muestra en la figura, y en paneles de 56
sellos color ladrillo (panel superior derecho), salmón (panel superior izquierdo) y ladrillo
sobrecargado (panel inferior izquierdo) de la colección de Ong. También en bloque esquina de
hoja de panel superior derecho de 9 sello color salmón de la colección de Ong (Figura 8). Este
subtipo no lo pude ver en ningún sello, bloques o paneles color rosa o rojo intenso.
Subtipo 5B
Las características son margen exterior superior roto en ángulo izquierdo, punto blanco en fondo
oscuro sobre la I de CENTESIMOS, extremo superior de la rama derecha de la U de
REPUBLICA no es recto, y la cifra 6 rota en la rama izquierda arriba (Figura 9). En la figura se
muestra un sello color ladrillo claro de mi colección con estas características. Este subtipo se
ubica en la posición 26, pero solo en el panel inferior izquierdo de 56 sellos, posición 159 de la
hoja. Solo se ve en los color ladrillo, no lo pude ver en ningún sello, bloques o paneles color rosa
o rojo intenso.
Subtipo 6 A
Este subtipo fue descrito por Lee y Carcavallo, sobre la RI de ORIENTAL se ve una “Y” blanca.
Se ubica en la posición 48 de cada panel de 56 sellos (Figura10).
Subtipo 6B
Fue descrito por Carcavallo como rombo irregular de color en el margen superior, con un vértice
tocando el margen sobre la R de ORIENTAL. Presenta también dos puntos de color hacia afuera
del margen externo izquierdo casi en el ángulo superior. Se ve en la posición 55 de los paneles
pero no siempre son claramente visibles las dos características (Figura11).
Subtipo 6C

Punto de color en el marco exterior derecho casi llegando al ángulo superior, en algunos casos se
puede ver como un engrosamiento del marco. En las figuras se muestra este subtipo en un cuadro
y un bloque de 10 sellos sobrecargados de mi colección (Figura 12 y Figura 13). Se ve en la
posición 27 de cada panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 7 A
Este subtipo es descrito por Lee y Carcavallo como gruesa mancha blanca sobre la izquierda de
la O de ORIENTAL, y marco exterior del sello interrumpido en una extensión de 1 mm sobre
esta letra. Puede verse además pequeña mancha blanca en la base de la rama derecha de la A de
REPUBLICA (Figura 14). Se ve en la posición 7 del panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 7B
Es descrito por Lee y Carcavallo como mancha blanca sobre la R de ORIENTAL. A la izquierda
de la E de REPUBLICA están cortados el recuadro blanco y el marco izquierdo por dos líneas de
color formando un triángulo. Este subtipo se observa en la posición 49 de cada panel de 56
sellos. En algunos casos no presentan la mancha blanca o es poco visible, esto puede ser
explicado por el desgaste de la plancha durante su uso. En el sello con este subtipo, en el panel
inferior derecho, no se ven las líneas formando un triángulo como se muestra en la figura, lo cual
puede tomarse como un nuevo subtipo 7Ba que se ubica en la posición 210 de la hoja (Figura
15).

2.2. Subtipos en el valor 8 centésimos
Subtipo 1 A
Es descrito por Carcavallo como línea gruesa horizontal de color se extiende desde la mitad del
sector buey en el escudo hasta la T de ORIENTAL (Figura 16). Se ve en la posición 43 de cada
panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 2 A
Es descrito en la colección de Ong y Gelabert, y se ve en un sello de mi colección, la U de
REPUBLICA está rota en la parte inferior de la rama derecha (Figura 17). En estas colecciones
ubican este subtipo en posición 23 pero puede verse en un bloque de 12 sellos sobrecargados de
mi colección, posición 51. No se encuentra en otras piezas estudiadas, por lo tanto este subtipo
solo puede verse en el panel inferior derecho, posición 119 de la hoja.
Subtipo 2B
En la colección de Ong y Gelabert se describe este subtipo como mancha de color que llega hasta
el marco interno a la altura de la A de ORIENTAL, y se puede ver en bloque verde oscuro de mi
colección (Figura 18). Este subtipo se ubica en la posición 30 como puede verse en el bloque
verde oscuro (Figura 19), posiciones 2-35, de la colección de Ong (ex Gelabert), que pertenece al
panel de 56 sellos ubicado en el lado derecho inferior de la hoja. Este subtipo no se ve en otros
bloques de la colección de Ong, como el verde claro (correspondiente al panel de 56 sellos
superior izquierdo), o el bloque sobrecargado correspondiente al panel inferior izquierdo o
superior derecho que esta invertido, ni tampoco en el bloque de 20 sellos con una línea del panel
inferior izquierdo y 4 del superior derecho. Esto indica que este subtipo se ve solo en los sellos
del panel inferior derecho en posición 30, posición 177 de la hoja.
Subtipo 2C
Corresponde al subtipo 2 A descripto por Carcavallo. Dos puntos de color en el margen superior,
en prolongación del marco izquierdo (Figura 20), se ubica en posición 44.
Subtipo 2Ca
Presenta las características del subtipo 2C, y se agregan mancha de color que cubre la M de
CENTESIMOS, manchas blancas e impresión borrosa en las letras BLICA de REPUBLICA, el
moño del escudo tiene una impresión borrosa, y pequeña mancha de color une el cuerpo del sello

con marco externo derecho a la altura de R de ORIENTAL (Figura 21). Se ve en un sello y un
bloque de 12 sellos borde inferior de hoja de mi colección que se muestra en la figura y en el que
se ve también el subtipo 2B (el cual se ve solamente en el panel inferior derecho, posición 177 de
la hoja). Este subtipo no se ve en piezas de otros paneles, por lo tanto este subtipo se ubica en la
posición 44 del panel inferior derecho de 56 sellos, posición 205 de la hoja.
Subtipo 2D
Importante línea de color en el margen externo cerca del ángulo inferior derecho (Figura 22).
Puede verse en un cuadro de mi colección que se muestra en la figura y en el bloque verde
oscuro (Figura 23), posiciones 2-35, de la colección de Ong (ex Gelabert), que pertenece al panel
de 56 sellos ubicado en el lado derecho inferior de la hoja. Este subtipo no se puede ver en otros
bloques y se ve solo en los sellos del panel inferior derecho en posición 23, posición 163 de la
hoja.
Subtipo 3 A
Punto de color casi tocando el margen externo superior a la altura de la L de REPUBLICA. Este
subtipo se observa en cuadro de mi colección junto con el subtipo 2 A (posición 44), lo que
indica que la posición para este subtipo es 45 (Figura 24). Se puede ver en un bloque de
colección de Ong, en la parte del cuadrante superior izquierdo (este bloque presenta una parte del
panel superior y una línea del panel inferior izquierdo), posición 87 de la hoja. Sin embargo no
se ve en el bloque de nueve sellos esquina inferior izquierda color verde oscuro de la colección
de Ong, lo cual descarta que este subtipo se encuentre también en la posición 199 de la hoja.
Esto indica que solo se puede verificar su ubicación en la posición 45 del panel superior
izquierdo, posición 87 de la hoja, pero no encontré bloques para verificar su existencia o no en el
panel invertido (superior derecho) y el inferior derecho.
Subtipo 3Aa
Importante punto de color en el margen externo engrosándolo sobre la IC de REPUBLICA, y
mancha de color tapando la parte superior y la base inferior de la L (Figura 25). Este subtipo se
ve en un sello, un cuadro de sellos sobrecargados, y un bloque de 12 sellos sobrecargado tipos 23-4 borde inferior de hoja de mi colección que se muestra en la figura y en el que se ve también
el subtipo 2B (este subtipo se ve solamente en el panel inferior derecho, posición 177 de la hoja).
Por este último bloque puede ubicarse este subtipo en la posición 45 del panel de 56 sellos. Estas
características no se pueden ver en un bloque que

izquierdo y una línea del panel inferior, ni tampoco en el bloque de nueve sellos esquina inferior
izquierda color verde oscuro, ambos de la colección de Ong, lo cual descarta que este subtipo se
encuentre en estos paneles. Por lo tanto este subtipo se encuentra en la posición 45 del panel
inferior derecho, posición 206 de la hoja.
Subtipo 4 A
Este subtipo fue descrito por Carcavallo como pequeña raya inclinada de color en el margen
superior sobre la izquierda de la L de REPUBLICA (Figura 26). Se ve en la posición 32 del
panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 4B
Este subtipo se describe en las colecciones de Gelabert y Ong como punto de color en el marco
externo derecho a la altura de la T de ORIENTAL (Figura 27). Puede verse en el bloque verde
oscuro (Figura 27), posiciones 2-35, de la colección de Ong (ex Gelabert), que pertenece al panel
inferior derecho de 56 sellos. Este subtipo no se puede ver en otros bloques y por lo tanto se ve
solo en los sellos del panel inferior derecho en posición 18, posición 151 de la hoja.
Subtipo 5 A
Mancha blanca debajo y un poco a la izquierda del 0 de la cifra (Figura 28). Este subtipo se ve en
el bloque verde claro del panel superior izquierdo que se muestra en la figura y el bloque verde
oscuro posiciones 2-35, ambos de la colección de Ong (ex Gelabert). También se ve en el bloque
de 64 sellos con 8 tête-bêche, una de las piezas más importantes de esta emisión y que se
encuentra en el catálogo de Soler y Llach del remate del 4 de febrero de 1999. Por todo lo
observado este subtipo se encuentra en los cuatro paneles de 56 sellos, en la posición 5.
Subtipo 6 A
Es descrito por Carcavallo como dos puntos de color en el margen superior, sobre la O de
ORIENTAL (Figura 29). Se ubica en la posición 6 de cada panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 6B
En colección de Ong se describe como línea blanca que sale de un ángulo hacia debajo de la T de
ORIENTAL (Figura 30). Este subtipo se ubica en la posición 20, la cual se confirma por los
bloques de la colección de Ong (ex Gelabert), uno verde claro (Figura 31) con posiciones 1-6, 813, 15-20, 22-27, 29-34, 36-41 y 43-48 del panel izquierdo superior ya que se ve la esquina de

hoja, y el otro verde oscuro (Figura 32) con posiciones 2-35 del panel inferior derecho por tener
borde de hoja a la derecha y el otro posible panel derecho es invertido.
Subtipos 7 A y 7B
En una pareja tête-bêche horizontal de mi colección (Figura 33) se ve un punto de color en el
borde externo a la altura de la U de REPUBLICA en uno de los sellos y en el otro una pequeña
línea diagonal de color hacia fuera del marco exterior a la altura de la B de REPUBLICA. En un
bloque de 8 sellos con dos parejas tête-bêche (Figura 34) de la colección de Ong (ex Gelabert) se
puede ver las mismas características en una de las parejas. Sin embargo en otra pareja tête-bêche
de mi colección (ex Paez) (Figura 35) se ve el punto de color en uno de los sellos, pero el otro no
presenta la pequeña línea de color a la altura de la B.
En el bloque con las posiciones 2-35 de Ong (ex Gelabert) también se ve el punto de color en el
borde externo a la altura de la U en el sello posición 35 (Figura 36). Esto ubica este subtipo (que
llamamos 7 A) en esta posición y por lo tanto el subtipo con la pequeña línea de color (que
llamaremos 7B) debe ser posición 28 que es la posición correspondiente para una pareja têtebêche horizontal. Sin embargo en la posición 28 del bloque citado anteriormente no se ve esta
característica.
Es fundamental observar el cuadro con dos parejas tête-bêche horizontales de mi colección (ex
Paez) (Figura 37), en este cuadro se ve el subtipo 7 A en dos sellos ubicados en posición
diagonal, lo que confirma este subtipo en posición 35, y el subtipo 7B que se ubica en la posición
28 solo se ve en un sello, indicando que este subtipo solo se encuentra en uno de los paneles de
56 sellos. En el bloque de 64 sellos con 8 tête-bêche, una de las piezas más importantes de esta
emisión y que se encuentra en el catálogo de Soler y Llach del remate del 4 de febrero de 1999
(Figura 38), puede verse que el subtipo 7B solo se ubica en el panel superior izquierdo y el panel
invertido no presenta este subtipo, y solo tiene el subtipo 7 A. Esto indica que el subtipo 7 A se
ubica en la posición 35 de todos los paneles y el 7B en la posición 28 solo del panel superior
izquierdo de 56 sellos, posición 49 de la hoja de 224 sellos.
Subtipo 7C
Este subtipo se caracteriza por presentar puntos de color dentro de AL de ORIENTAL. Estos
puntos pueden ser muy intensos en los sellos de color verde oscuro y llegan a cubrir casi
totalmente la L. Este subtipo se ve en algunos sellos de mi colección (Figura 39) y en un cuadro
esquina de hoja inferior derecha de la colección de Ong, en el que se puede ubicarlo en la
posición 49 (Figura 40).

En un bloque de seis sellos centro de hoja de mi colección (ex Paez) con dos parejas tête-bêche
horizontales y una vertical (Figura 41) también puede verse este subtipo y al ser verde claro
pueden verse los puntos sin cubrir totalmente la L. Las parejas de este bloque son posición 49-14
(invertido), 56-7 (invertido) y 7-1, y confirma la posición 49 para este subtipo.
Subtipo 7D
Se caracteriza por presentar un punto de color en el margen externo izquierdo a nivel de EP de
REPUBLICA (Figura 42). En la figura pueden verse tres cuadros del remate de H.R. Harmer (27
de abril de 2007), colección del Dr. Gonzalo Fernandez, los cuales presentan el subtipo 7C,
posición 49, y debajo de este los sellos con la característica descripta. Esto indica que este
subtipo se encuentra en posición 56. Dos de los cuadros de la figura son esquina de hoja y por lo
tanto pertenecen al panel inferior derecho. Este subtipo no se ve en sellos en posición 56 de las
piezas de mi colección y de la colección de Ong, por lo tanto este subtipo solo se ubica en la
posición 56 del panel inferior derecho, posición 224 de la hoja.

2.3. Subtipos en el valor 10 centésimos
Subtipo 2 A
Es descrito por Lee y Carcavallo como raya de color penetra en el fondo del sello, partiendo del
ángulo inferior izquierdo del marco exterior (Figura 43). Lee agrega a la descripción pequeña
línea en la N de CENTESIMOS. Se ubica en la posición 37 del panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 2B
Línea blanca baja del cuadrante superior derecho pasando por IENT de ORIENTAL (Figura 44).
Está característica se puede ver en un bloque de 28 sellos de la colección de Britz, el cual
pertenece al panel superior derecho. Se ubica en la posición 2 del panel de 56 sellos. No se ve
esta característica en ninguno de los bloques de la colección de Ong, por lo tanto pienso que solo
se ve en la posición 9 de la hoja (posición 2 del panel superior derecho).
Subtipo 2C
En este subtipo no se ve la parte superior de la primera S de CENTESIMOS, y presenta manchas
blancas dentro y arriba de ORIEN de ORIENTAL (Figura 45). Está característica se puede ver
en sellos de la colección de Ong y Gelabert, y en el bloque de 28 sellos de la colección de Britz,
el que pertenece al panel superior derecho, y puede ubicarse en la posición 23. No se ve esta
característica en ninguno de los bloques de la colección de Ong, por lo tanto pienso que solo se
ve en la posición 51 de la hoja (posición 23 del panel superior derecho).
Subtipo 3 A
Línea blanca atraviesa bajando en la parte inferior de sello, ingresando por el borde izquierdo un
poco encima del fondo blanco que tiene la cifra (Figura 46). Está característica se puede ver en
un bloque de 28 sellos de la colección de Britz, el que pertenece al panel superior derecho, y se
ubica en la posición 17 del panel de 56 sellos. No se ve esta característica en ninguno de los
bloques de la colección de Ong, por lo tanto pienso que solo se ve en la posición 38 de la hoja
(posición 17 del panel superior derecho).
Subtipo 3B
Punto de color casi en el ángulo superior izquierdo haciendo cuerpo con el sello sin tocar el
borde externo superior (Figura 47). Esta característica se observa en varias piezas de la colección
de Ong, y se ubica en la posición 24 del panel de 56 sellos.

Subtipo 3Ba
Presenta la característica del subtipo 3B, pero también se ve una línea blanca que atraviesa el
sello, casi verticalmente, bajando desde el borde superior cerca del ángulo superior izquierdo y
pasando por REPUB de REPUBLICA y por la cifra 10 (Figura 46). Esta línea es la continuación
de la que se ve en el subtipo 3 A. Está característica se puede ver en un bloque de 28 sellos de la
colección de Britz, el que pertenece al panel superior derecho, y se ubica en la posición 24 del
panel de 56 sellos. No se ve esta característica en ninguno de los bloques de la colección de Ong,
por lo tanto pienso que solo se ve en la posición 52 de la hoja (posición 24 del panel superior
derecho).
Subtipo 4 A
Este subtipo es descrito por Lee y Carcavallo como mancha blanca en el fondo unido sobre la
última S de CENTESIMOS (Figura 48). Posición 11 del panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 6 A
Línea blanca baja hacia la izquierda en forma diagonal desde el marco exterior superior y cruza
la O de ORIENTAL en la parte superior (Figura 49). Se puede ver en un cuadro ocre de mi
colección y en el panel de 56 sellos de la colección de Ong, ubicándose en la posición 34. Este
panel es posición izquierda, presumiblemente superior, ya que no se puede ver en un bloque de
28 sellos del panel inferior izquierdo, ni en bloque de 12 sellos también de un panel inferior
ambos de la colección de Ong. Por lo tanto este subtipo se ubica en la posición 34 del panel
superior izquierdo, posición 62 de la hoja.
Subtipo 7 A
Mancha de color diagonal baja desde el borde externo derecho casi cubriendo la EN de
ORIENTAL y atravesando el sello (Figura 50). Está característica se puede ver en un sello
sobrecargado de mi colección y en un bloque de 28 sellos de la colección de Britz, el que
pertenece al panel superior derecho, y se ubica en la posición 7 del panel de 56 sellos. No se ve
esta característica en ninguno de los bloques de la colección de Ong, por lo tanto pienso que solo
se ve en la posición 14 de la hoja (posición 7 del panel superior derecho).

2.4. Subtipos en el valor 12 centésimos
Subtipo 1 A
Este subtipo fue descrito por Lee y Carcavallo como espesamiento del marco izquierdo a nivel
de la parte superior de la I de ORIENTAL y pequeñísimo punto de color sobre la cabeza de la I
y sobre la rama derecha de la N de ORIENTAL. También presenta una mancha blanca sobre la
cifra a la izquierda de la R de REPUBLICA y una pequeña interrupción en el marco externo
izquierdo a la altura de la E de REPUBLICA (Figura 51). Se ubica en la posición 22 de cada
panel de 56 sellos. En algunos sellos no se ve la mancha blanca a la izquierda de la R de
REPUBLICA, posiblemente por desgaste de la plancha, y por lo tanto se produce un nuevo
subtipo 1 Aa el cual es más escaso.
Subtipo 1B
También fue descrito por Lee y Carcavallo, presenta las características del subtipo anterior pero
se agrega un importante retoque en la porción central, escudo y guirnalda. La distinción más
prominente se encuentra en las fuertes líneas que separan los dos cuarteles izquierdos del escudo
heráldico (Figura 52). Se ubica en la posición 22. Es un subtipo muy difícil de encontrar y no se
ve en los bloques grandes y paneles de 56 sellos de las colecciones que estudie, esto indica que
se origina por retoque en la plancha debido a desgaste por su uso.
Subtipo 1C
En un sello de mi colección se observa punto de color haciendo cuerpo con el fondo en la parte
superior de la rama derecha de la N de ORIENTAL (Figura 53). Esta característica se puede ver
en el panel de 56 sellos inferior izquierdo de color celeste, en un bloque azul pizarra y en el
panel azul de 56 sellos sobrecargado que también se muestra en la figura, todos de la colección
de Ong. En estas piezas este subtipo puede ubicarse en la posición 43 del panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 1D
Línea blanca atraviesa el sello en la parte inferior debajo del fondo blanco que contiene la cifra y
apenas subiendo (Figura 54). Esta línea se continúa en el sello tipo 2C. Puede verse en panel
celeste de la colección de Ong, el cual se muestra en la figura, y en sello de mi colección. Se
ubica en la posición 8, pero solo se ve en el panel de 56 sellos inferior izquierdo, posición 127 de
la hoja.

Subtipo 1E
Dos pequeñas líneas blancas horizontales, una horizontal atraviesa la A de REPUBLICA y la O
de ORIENTAL, y la segunda atraviesa la RI de ORIENTAL saliendo por el borde derecho del
sello (Figura 55). Se ve en dos bloques esquina de hoja del sello sobrecargado (ex Paez) de mi
colección que se muestran en la figura, y se ubica en la posición 15, pero solo se ve en el panel
superior izquierdo, posición 29 de la hoja.
Subtipo 2 A
En la base de la rama derecha de la A de REPUBLICA entra una mancha gruesa de color (Figura
56). Este subtipo esta descrito en la colección de Gelabert y Ong, y se ubica en la posición 51 del
panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 2B
Línea blanca apenas inclinada subiendo hacia la derecha atraviesa el sello en la parte inferior
(Figura 57). Esta línea se continúa en el sello siguiente, ver subtipo 3B. Este subtipo se ubica en
la posición 2, como se muestra en la figura que se ve el bloque de 21 sellos esquina de hoja de la
colección de Ong, pero solo en el panel superior izquierdo de la hoja de 224 sellos. Este subtipo
es muy parecido al 2C pero en este la línea entra por debajo a la izquierda del fondo blanco que
contiene la cifra a la altura de la N y sale pegado a la S de CENTESIMOS.
Subtipo 2C
Línea blanca atraviesa el sello en la parte inferior abajo del fondo blanco que contiene la cifra y
apenas subiendo (Figura 54). Esta línea es la continuación de la que se ve en el subtipo 1D.
Puede verse en panel celeste de la colección de Ong que se muestra en la figura y se ubica en la
posición 9, pero solo se ve en el panel inferior izquierdo, posición 128 de la hoja. Este subtipo es
muy parecido al 2B pero en este la línea entra por debajo a la izquierda del fondo blanco que
contiene la cifra a la altura de la primer E y sale abajo muy cerca de la I de CENTESIMOS.
Subtipo 3 A
Raya de color en el ángulo superior derecho fuera del marco exterior (Figuras 58). Este subtipo
es descripto por Gonzalo Fernández en su colección y se ubica en la posición 3 del panel de 56
sellos.

Subtipo 3Aa
En algunos sellos de mi colección, en el panel de 56 sellos sobrecargados que se muestra en la
figura y en un cuadro de la colección de Ong se ven iguales características que el subtipo 3 A,
pero además un punto de color en el margen externo izquierdo, casi en el ángulo superior (Figura
59). Este subtipo se ve solo en el panel superior derecho, posición 10 de la hoja.
Subtipo 3B
Raya de color como el tipo 3 A, pero presenta además línea blanca apenas inclinada subiendo
hacia la derecha atraviesa el sello en la parte inferior (Figura 60), la cual es la continuación de la
línea del subtipo 2 A, ubicada un poco más alta, y continúa en el sello siguiente, ver subtipo 4D
(Figura 57). Este subtipo se muestra la figura en un sello sobrecargado de mi colección y se
ubica en la posición 3, pero solo en el panel superior izquierdo de la hoja de 224 sellos, por lo
tanto también posición 3 de la hoja.
Subtipo 3C
Corresponde al subtipo 3 A descripto por Lee y Carcavallo, raya de color horizontal en el marco
izquierdo a la altura de BL de REPUBLICA (Figura 61). Se ubica en la posición 45 del panel de
56 sellos.
Subtipo 3D
Línea blanca apenas inclinada bajando hacia la derecha atraviesa el sello a la altura del fondo
blanco que contiene el valor y termina un poco debajo del corte que presenta el marco externo
derecho en este tipo (Figura 62). Se puede ver en el bloque de 21 sellos esquina de hoja de la
colección de Ong y por lo tanto se ubica en la posición 10 pero solamente en el panel superior
izquierdo de la hoja de 224 sellos, posición 17 de la hoja.
Subtipo 3E
Línea blanca atraviesa desde arriba la C de REPUBLICA (Figura 63). Este subtipo fue descrito
en la colección del Sr. Gonzalo Fernández y puede verse en panel celeste de la colección de Ong
y en sello sobrecargado sobre carta de mi colección (ex Paez) que se muestran en la figura. Se
ubica en la posición 17, pero solo se ve en el panel inferior izquierdo, posición 143 de la hoja.

Subtipo 4 A
Pequeño punto de color en el margen externo casi tocando la línea divisoria con el sello siguiente
a la altura de MO de CENTESIMOS (Figura 64). Este subtipo se muestra en la figura en un
panel de sellos sobrecargados de la colección de Ong y se ubica en la posición 25 del panel de 56
sellos.
Subtipo 4Aa
Corresponde al subtipo 4 A descrito por Lee y Carcavallo, el que se describe con gran mancha
blanca sobre la “E” de “ORIENTAL”. Presenta también el punto en margen externo como
subtipo 4 A (Figura 65). Se ubica en la posición 25, pero solo en el bloque superior derecho,
posición 53 de la hoja.
Subtipo 4Ab
Pequeño punto de color en el margen externo casi tocando la línea divisoria con el sello siguiente
a la altura de MO de CENTESIMOS. Es muy similar al subtipo 4 A pero el punto es muy
pequeño (Figura 64). Se ubica en la posición 32 del panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 4B
Este subtipo fue descrito por Lee y Carcavallo como mancha de color a la derecha de la parte
inferior de la N de ORIENTAL (Figura 66). Se ubica en la posición 39 del panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 4Ba
Iguales característica del subtipo 4B, pero presenta además una mancha blanca cerca del ángulo
superior derecho y una línea blanca lo atraviesa un poco arriba del fondo blanco que contiene la
cifra y subiendo comenzando debajo de la R de REPUBLICA y terminando entre AL de
ORIENTAL (Figura 67). Por tener las características del tipo 4B se ubica en la posición 39. No
pude verlo en ninguno de los paneles de 56 sellos de la colección de Ong lo que indicaría que
solo se ve en el panel de 56 sellos superior izquierdo de la hoja, posición 74 de la hoja de 224
sellos.
Subtipo 4C
Este subtipo fue descrito por Carcavallo y sus características son pequeña línea horizontal
inclinada sale del lado izquierdo de la primera E de CENTÉSIMOS, no siempre visible

claramente, punto redondo sale del fondo oscuro sobre el 2 de la cifra 12, y punto de color,
haciendo cuerpo con el fondo, en la parte superior de la rama derecha de la A de REPUBLICA
(Figura 68). Este subtipo se ubica en la posición 53 del panel de 56 sellos.
Subtipo 4D
Línea blanca apenas inclinada subiendo hacia la derecha atraviesa el sello en la parte inferior
(Figura 57). Es la continuación de la línea del subtipo 3B, ubicada un poco más alta. Este subtipo
se ubica en la posición 4 pero solo en el panel superior izquierdo, posición 4 de la hoja de 224
sellos.
Subtipo 4E
Punto de color en el marco externo sobre la IC de REPUBLICA (Figura 69), en algunos casos
puede verse un corte en el borde externos a la izquierda de la cifra 12. Se ve en dos sellos de mi
colección, en el panel color celeste de 56 sellos de la colección de Ong, pero no en el bloque
color pizarra de la misma colección y que pertenece al mismo panel de 56 sellos, esto indica que
es un subtipo no constante. No se ve en otros paneles y bloques que he estudiado, por lo tanto se
ubica en la posición 46 pero solo en el panel inferior izquierdo, posición 200 de la hoja.
Subtipo 4F
Línea blanca ingresa por debajo de la cifra del valor y desciende lentamente haciéndose cada vez
menos visible (Figura 70), esta línea es la continuación de la del tipo 3D. Presenta además una
línea blanca bajando desde el escudo en forma casi vertical y pasando por la T de
CENTESIMOS. En la figura se muestra este subtipo en un bloque de 21 sellos de la colección de
Ong que corresponde al panel superior izquierdo. Se ubica en la posición 11 pero solo en el
panel superior izquierdo, posición 18 de la hoja de 224 sellos.
Subtipo 4G
Tres puntos blancos en el fondo de color entre la A de REPUBLICA y la O de ORIENTAL
(Figura 71). Se puede ver en un cuadro sobrecargado de mi colección que se muestra en la figura
y en el bloque de 55 sellos azul oscuro de Ong que corresponde al panel inferior derecho. Se
ubica en la posición 18 del panel de 56 sellos, pero no se puede ver en otras piezas que estudie,
por lo tanto solo se encuentra en el panel inferior derecho, posición 151 de la hoja.

Subtipo 5 A
Línea blanca atraviesa la parte superior del sello partiendo de la O de ORIENTAL (Figuras 72,
73 y 74), esta línea continúa en el sello siguiente, ver subtipo 6B. Presenta además una segunda
línea diagonal subiendo comenzando un poco arriba del ángulo inferior izquierdo del sello,
pasando por la C de CENTÉSIMOS y terminando en el escudo. Este subtipo se ubica en la
posición 26 pero solo en el panel superior derecho, posición 54 de la hoja.
Subtipo 5B
Dos líneas blancas cruzan el sello, una casi horizontal a la altura de la U de REPUBLICA y la E
de ORIENTAL, y la otra un poco más abajo, apenas inclinada descendiendo hacia la derecha
(Figuras 72, 73 y 75). Estas dos líneas continúan en el sello siguiente, ver subtipo 6C. Aparece
una segunda línea que sale del borde izquierdo y termina en la R de REPUBLICA. Este subtipo
se ubica en la posición 33 pero solo en el panel superior derecho, posición 68 de la hoja.
Subtipo 5C
Línea blanca atraviesa el sello encima del fondo blanco que contiene el valor y descendiendo
levemente hacia la derecha (Figura 76). Este subtipo se ve en un panel celeste de la colección de
Ong y en un sello de mi colección que se muestra en la figura, y se ubica en la posición 5, pero
solo en el panel inferior izquierdo, posición 117 de la hoja.
Subtipo 5D
Corresponde al subtipo 5 A descrito por Lee y Carcavallo, presenta manchas blancas en el fondo
de color muy cerca de los ángulos inferiores (Figura 77). Se ubica en la posición 54, pero solo en
el panel superior derecho, posición 110 de la hoja de 224 sellos.
Subtipo 5E
En mi colección, un sello tipo 5 presenta una línea blanca que comienza a la altura de la R de
REPUBLICA y atraviesa el sello casi horizontal (Figura 78). Esta línea es continuación de la
descripta en el subtipo 4Ba y por lo tanto se ubica en la posición 40. No pude verlo en ninguno
de los paneles de 56 sellos de la colección de Ong lo que indicaría que solo se ve en el panel de
56 sellos superior izquierdo, posición 75 de la hoja.

Subtipo 5F
Pequeña línea blanca entre la A y la O de REPUBLICA ORIENTAL comienza en el borde
externo superior y baja diagonal terminando en la parte superior de la O (Figura 79). Se ve en el
bloque de 54 sellos azules de la colección de Ong, en un sello y un bloque sobrecargado (ex
Paez) de mi colección que se muestra en la figura. Se ubica en la posición 40 pero solo del panel
inferior derecho, posición 194 de la hoja.
Subtipo 5G
Delgada línea blanca baja del escudo pasando por AL de ORIENTAL, atraviesa la última S de
CENTÉSIMOS y sale por el borde exterior un poco encima del ángulo inferior derecho. Otra
delgada línea ingresa por la izquierda bajando diagonalmente y corta la cifra 12 en la parte
superior (Figura 80). Se ve en el panel celeste de la colección de Ong y en un sello sobrecargado
azul de mi colección que se muestra en la figura. Se ubica en la posición 33 pero solo del panel
de 56 sellos inferior izquierdo, posición 173 de la hoja.
Subtipo 6 A
Línea blanca atraviesa el sello apenas por debajo del borde superior (Figura 81). Esta línea
continúa en el sello siguiente, ver subtipo 7 A. Este subtipo se muestra en la figura en el bloque
de 54 sellos azul de la colección de Ong y se ubica en la posición 13, pero solo en el panel
inferior derecho, posición 139 de la hoja.
Subtipo 6B
Punto blanco después de la “A” de “REPUBLICA”, y línea blanca apenas inclinada bajando
hacia la derecha y continuándose en la parte superior del sello subtipo 5 A (Figuras 72, 73 y 82).
Este subtipo se ubica en la posición 27, pero solo en el panel superior derecho, posición 55 de la
hoja.
Subtipo 6C
Dos líneas blancas cruzan el sello, una casi horizontal a la altura de la U de REPUBLICA y la E
de ORIENTAL, y la otra un poco más abajo, apenas inclinada descendiendo hacia la derecha
(Figura 83). Estas dos líneas son la continuación de las líneas que se ven el subtipo 5B (Figuras
72 y 73). Este subtipo se ubica en la posición 34, pero solo en el panel superior derecho, posición
69 de la hoja.

Subtipo 6D
Línea blanca sale del ángulo inferior derecho del sello subiendo hasta el fondo blanco en SI de
CENTÉSIMOS (Figura 76). En la figura se ve en el panel inferior izquierdo de color celeste de
la colección de Ong, y en un sello de mi colección. Se ubica en la posición 6, pero solo en el
panel inferior izquierdo, posición 118 de la hoja.
Subtipo 6E
Gran punto de color casi tocando la línea de división con el sello tipo 5, a la altura de la cifra de
valor del sello (Figura 84). Se puede ver en un cuadro borde inferior del panel de mi colección
que se muestra en la figura y ubica a este subtipo en la posición 48. También se ve en el panel de
56 sellos color celeste (Figura 85), pero no se ve en un bloque color azul pizarra ambos de la
colección de Ong y del panel inferior izquierdo. Tampoco se ve en otros bloques y paneles de
otra posición en la hoja, por lo tanto el subtipo se encuentra en la posición 48 pero solo del panel
inferior izquierdo, posición 202 de la hoja pero no es constante.
Subtipo 6F
Manchas de color en la parte inferior de la C de REPUBLICA y punto blanco en el marco del
escudo justo debajo de la A de REPUBLICA (Figura 86). Este subtipo se ve en el panel superior
derecho de 56 sellos sobrecargados de la colección de Ong y en un cuadro de mi colección que
se muestra en la figura. No se ve en otros bloques importantes que estudie, por lo tanto este
subtipo se ubica en la posición 48, pero solo en el panel superior derecho, posición 97 de la hoja.
Subtipo 7 A.
Línea blanca, casi horizontal con pequeño descenso hacia la derecha, cruza el sello en la parte
superior (Figura 87), y es la continuación de la línea que se ve en el subtipo 6 A (Figura 81). Este
subtipo se ubica en la posición 14, pero solo en el panel inferior derecho, posición 140 de la hoja.
Subtipo 7B
Línea blanca atraviesa el sello en forma casi vertical sobre el lado izquierdo, comenzando casi en
el ángulo superior izquierdo (Figura 88) y esta línea continúa en el sello siguiente más abajo, ver
subtipo 7C. Este subtipo fue descrito en las colecciones de Gelabert y Ong, mostrándose en la
figura un panel de 56 sellos y un bloque de 18 sellos, ambos sobrecargados y de la colección de

Ong, en los cuales puede verse este subtipo. El mismo se ubica en la posición 28, pero solo en el
panel superior derecho, posición 56 de la hoja.
Subtipo 7C
Línea blanca atraviesa el sello en forma casi vertical sobre el lado izquierdo (Figura 88). Esta
línea es la continuación de la que se ve en el subtipo 7B pero se ubica un poco más a la derecha,
y se continúa en el sello siguiente más abajo, ver subtipo 7D. Este subtipo se ubica en la posición
35, pero solo en el panel superior derecho, posición 70 de la hoja.
Subtipo 7D
Línea blanca atraviesa en forma casi vertical sobre el lado izquierdo pero cercano al medio del
sello, y desaparece antes de llegar al fondo blanco que contiene la palabra CENTESIMOS
(Figura 88). Esta línea es la continuación de la que se ve en los subtipos 7B y 7C. Este subtipo se
ubica en la posición 42, pero solo en el panel superior derecho, posición 84 de la hoja.
Los sellos cuya característica es presentar líneas blancas se describen en 24 subtipos en la
impresión del sello de 12 centésimos, sin embargo no lo pude encontrar en los escuditos de 6 y 8
centésimos, y solo en muy pocos casos en el de 10 centésimos, en este trabajo se describen 4
subtipos de este valor con líneas blancas. Las piezas más importantes conocidas para este sello,
que se encuentran en la colección de Ong, permiten hacer una reconstrucción parcial de la hoja
de 224 sellos, mostrando las posiciones de los principales subtipos con líneas blancas y las
cuales no se repiten en los diferentes paneles (Figura 89).

3. Estiramiento de las filas en los paneles
Al observar el panel de 56 sellos del valor 6 centésimos sobrecargados con 20 centésimos de mi
colección, que se muestra en la figura, se puede ver que las 8 filas de sellos están bien alineadas
en el extremo derecho, pero en el extremo izquierdo esta alineación no es exacta y existe un
desplazamiento hacia la izquierda (Figura 90). Por lo tanto existe un estiramiento de las filas al ir
bajando en el panel.
Si se observa detenidamente la columna de sellos tipo 1, puede verse que hay un notorio
estiramiento al pasar de la fila 3 a la 4 (Figura 91), y de la fila 6 a la 7 (Figura 92). Entre los
sellos posición 15 y 22 (inicio de filas 3 y 4), se ve un desplazamiento de 1 mm (Figura 91),
mientras que en los sellos posición 36 y 43 (inicio de filas 6 y 7) el desplazamiento es mayor y
mide 1,2 mm (Figura 92). Esta observación es muy útil si se encuentra en un bloque ya que
permite conocer su posición en el panel de 56 sellos, como ejemplo se muestra un bloque de 9
sellos de mi colección (Figura 93)
Al observar el desplazamiento de los sellos a lo largo de la fila puede verse que este se
incrementa gradualmente desde la derecha hacia la izquierda, esto se ve claramente en las figuras
en las cuales se superpuso las filas (Figuras 94 y 95).
Esto indicaría que no coincide perfectamente el bloque de transferencia de 7 sellos entre las
líneas. Estas diferencias pueden deberse a la rotura en el bloque de transferencia, o un
estiramiento al mojar el papel usado en la transferencia. Esta última explicación pienso que es la
correcta ya que el desfasaje de la izquierda se va corrigiendo gradualmente hasta llegar la borde
derecho, y no he podido observar un salto que explique una ruptura del bloque de transferencia
entre estas dos líneas.
Para el caso del sello de 8 centésimos no se conocen paneles completos de 56 sellos, pero en la
Figura 96 puede verse un bloque con la parte superior del panel y otro sobrecargado de la parte
inferior, ambos de la colección de Ong. En estas piezas se observa que nuevamente aparece un
desplazamiento de líneas, pero en este caso solo entre las líneas 7 y 8 del panel (Figura 96).
Este desplazamiento nuevamente es producido por un estiramiento del bloque de transferencia
viéndose una disminución del desplazamiento desde el tipo 1 al 7 (Figura 97).
Para el sello de 10 centésimos se conoce un panel completo que pertenece a Ong y se muestra en
la figura (Figura 98). En este caso se ven desfasajes entre las líneas 1-2, 4-5 y 7-8.

Para el sello de 12 centésimos se conocen paneles completos, en la Figura 10 se muestra uno del
sello sobrecargado 5 centésimos y que pertenece a la colección de Ong. Nuevamente se puede
ver desfasaje entre las líneas, en este caso para las líneas 1-2, 2-3 y 6-7 (Figura 99).
