El pretexto de este documental es el traslado en 1964 de un enorme monolito prehispánico desde el
pueblo de San Miguel Coatlinchan (en Texcoco, Estado de México), al Museo de Antropología de la capital
del país. El film utiliza valiosos y explícitos documentos filmados de los sesenta, cuando el traslado de
la piedra –que se estima es del siglo I antes de Cristo o poco más–, testimonios de los protagonistas y
las opiniones de la gente, que fue despojada de esa ofrenda al rey (o reina, no se sabe ni se sabrá) de la
fertilidad. Desde entonces, la figura está presente en su pueblo de origen en un sinfín de reproducciones y
réplicas. La piedra ausente analiza, a partir de la historia de este objeto y sus trayectorias, los conflictos
en torno al patrimonio, la propiedad cultural y la custodia legítima de la historia. El empleo de secuencias
de animación valen más que cualquier comentario desde la banda sonora, y más bien hacen que esta
sea la inusual historia de algo que está y no está.
The pretext for this documentary is the moving, in 1964, of an enormous pre-Hispanic monolith from
the town of San Miguel Coatlinchan (in Texcoco, State of Mexico) to the Anthropology Museum in the
capital city. The film uses valuable and explicit documents filmed in the sixties at the time the stone was
moved –which is estimated to be from around the 1st century AD-, testimonies from the protagonists
and the people’s opinion, which was taken from the offering to the king (or the queen, as this remains
to be known) of fertility. Since then, the figure is present in its town of origin in an endless number of
reproductions and replicas. The Absent Stone analyses, from the history of this object and where it has
been, the conflicts regarding heritage, cultural property and legitimate safekeeping of its history. The
use of animation sequences are worth more than any comment from the soundtrack and turn this into
the unusual story of something that is and is not there.
