More than a Celebration, Día de los Muertos, a Reflection of Life, Tradition and
Culture
La Muerte Tiene Permiso Exhibit
DENVER — October 16th, 2014 — The Mexican Cultural Center, and the Consulate
General of Mexico, are pleased to present the annual Día de Muertos exhibit. This exhibit, La
Muerte Tiene Permiso, will be open to the public as of October 20th to November 7th, 2014
with free admission for all, Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm.
Many make an instant connection when they see the image of the Catrina, a very well
dressed skeleton woman to the Dia de Muertos Celebration. Therefore this year’s exhibit will
highlight some of the most significant work of Mr. Jose Guadalupe Posada, the creator of the
Catrina. This year’s exhibit, titled, La Muerte Tiene Permiso, features a number of pieces of
Posada’s famous calavera (skeleton) work and revolutionary prints.
Jose Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913) is considered one of Mexico’s most notable
printmakers. Posada’s illustrations were created for popular newspapers and books. Today,
most of his work is associated with Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration, which
take place during November 1st and 2nd, although the revolutionary political themes, social
commentary and imagery of his work remain moving and relevant to many. The exhibit will
also include traditional altars with the symbolic elements of the Día de Muertos celebration.
The Día de Muertos celebration represents a long-standing Mexican tradition that, in recent
years, has gained esteem in the U.S. It is a tradition and celebration that has been a part of
Mexico’s culture for over 3,000 years, and has evolved over time, and different regions of
Mexico have different ways of celebrating. UNESCO (the United Nations’ Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization) proclaimed the “Indigenous Festivity dedicated to the
Dead”, or Día de Muertos Celebration, as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2003
and this proclamation was inscribed in 2008.

Exhibición La Muerte Tiene Permiso
DENVER – Octubre 16 del 2014 – El Centro Cultural Mexicano y el Consulado General de
México en Denver se complacen en presentar la exhibición anual de Día de Muertos. La
exhibición “La Muerte Tiene Permiso”, estará abierta al público del 20 de octubre al 7 de
noviembre, 2014 con admisión gratis para todos, lunes a viernes de 8:30am a 5:00pm.
Al ver la Catrina, ese esqueleto ataviado de ropas finas, ya se ha vuelto punto de referencia
obligado al recordar el Día de los Muertos; por eso, la exhibición de este año estará
dedicada al trabajo del Maestro José Guadalupe Posada, el creador de la catrina. La
exhibición se titula “La Muerte Tiene Permiso”, y consta de ilustraciones famosas con
calaveras y de la revolución mexicana.
José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913) es considerado como uno de los caricaturistas y
grabadistas más destacados de México. Hoy en día, su trabajo ha inspirado la mayoría de las
imágenes que se utilizan durante la celebración de Día de Muertos, la cual se lleva a cabo el
primero y segundo de noviembre. Su trabajo con temas de políticos, sociales y de la vida
diaria siguen siendo relevantes para muchos. La exhibición también presentará los
tradicionales altares de muertos, con los simbólicos elementos relacionados con esta
celebración.
La celebración de Día de Muertos representa una tradición antigua que, en años recientes,
es más reconocida en los Estados Unidos. Es una tradición y celebración que ha sido parte
de la cultura Mexicana por más de 3,000 años, y ha evolucionado a través del tiempo y se
celebra de distintas maneras a través de las diferentes regiones de México. En el 2003,
UNESCO (Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia, y la Cultura)
declaro la festividad indígena del Día de Muertos, como obra maestra del patrimonio
cultural de la humanidad. ”
