Giant Killers
1 Samuel 17 relates the popular story of David's victory over the giant
Goliath. The nation of Israel was in battle against the Philistines and
every day Goliath challenged the Israelites to resolve their conflict by
sending out their champion to fight him…winner take all. While we may
not have to go hand-to-hand against a giant, there are lessons from this
story we can apply to resolving our problems.
The Israelites compared Goliath to themselves and were terrified.
"Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines
and shouted his usual defiance… When the Israelites saw the man, they
all ran from him in great fear" (1 Samuel 17:23-24). Sometimes what we
face seems much more than we can deal with and can be overwhelming.
This kind of fear can be crippling and keep us from doing anything at all.
Goliath compared David to himself and was overconfident. "He
looked David over and saw that he was only a boy, ruddy and handsome,
and he despised him. He said to David, 'Am I a dog that you come at me
with sticks?' And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 'Come here,’ he
said, 'and I'll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the
field!'" (1 Samuel 17:42-44). The opposite extreme happens with people
who are so confident in their own abilities that they tackle something
above and beyond what they can handle.

En primera de Samuel 17 se cuenta la popular historia de David sobre Goliat.
La nación de Israel se encontraba en guerra contra los Filisteos y día a día
Goliat venía a retarlos para que enviaran a su mejor guerrero a batirse con él
en lucha abierta, en donde el ganador se llevaría todo. Es muy posible que

Goliat, el campeón de Gat, salía del orden del batallón para gritarles a los

huyendo espantados "Mientras conversaban, Goliat, el gran guerrero filisteo
de Gat, salió de entre las filas para repetir su desafío, y David lo oyó.
Cuando los israelitas vieron a Goliat, huyeron despavoridos" (1 Samuel
17:23-24). Algunas veces, las cosas por las que pasamos parecen mucho
mayores de lo que en realidad son. Este tipo de temor nos puede paralizar y
evitar que hagamos algo.
Goliat, al compararse con David, no tenía nada que temer, y era sobre
confidente. "Le echó una mirada a David y, al darse cuenta de que era
apenas un muchacho, trigueño y buen mozo, con desprecio le dijo: '¿Soy
acaso un perro para que vengas a atacarme con palos?' Y maldiciendo a
David en nombre de sus dioses, añadió: '¡Ven acá, que les voy a echar tu
carne a las aves del cielo y a las fieras del campo!'" (1 Samuel 17:42-44).
Todo lo opuesto sucede cuando la gente cree que es más de lo que deberían
pensar de sí mismo y se mete en camisa de once varas y fracasan.
David compared Goliath to God and was justifiably confident. "David
said to the Philistine, 'You come against me with sword and spear and
javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the
God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD
will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head.
Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the
air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there
is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by
sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD's, and He
will give all of you into our hands'" (1 Samuel 17:45-47). Large or small,
we need to be confident that in God the victory is always certain. It may
not always work out the way we want, but it will always work out
according to His perfect plan.
David comparó a Goliat con Dios y salió victorioso. "David le contestó:
'Tú vienes contra mí con espada, lanza y jabalina, pero yo vengo a ti en el
nombre del SEÑOR Todopoderoso, el Dios de los ejércitos de Israel, a los que
has desafiado. Hoy mismo el SEÑOR te entregará en mis manos; y yo te
mataré y te cortaré la cabeza. Hoy mismo echaré los cadáveres del ejército
filisteo a las aves del cielo y a las fieras del campo, y todo el mundo sabrá
que hay un Dios en Israel. Todos los que están aquí reconocerán que el
SEÑOR salva sin necesidad de espada ni de lanza. La batalla es del SEÑOR, y
Él los entregará a ustedes en nuestras manos" (1 Samuel 17:45-47). Grande
o pequeño, tenemos que confiar que en Dios la victoria es segura. Puede que
no sea como lo planeamos, pero sin duda será de beneficio para Su plan
eterno.
No problem is too big for God, and God is never too big for any problem.
No hay problema suficientemente grande para Dios y Dios no es demasiado
grande para cualquier problema.

admonishing and teaching with all wisdom
