READING THE FACE OF GOD XIX - DISCERNMENT
“Consolations” which are often characterized as feelings of exaltation are more tricky to discern. Consolation at its
root comes from God when we are on the right path, and it is accompanied by “peace” but not just tranquility of
feelings, but peace that leads us to act. When we experience that peace it leads us to mission, in other words what
God wants us to do. That is the experience of the consolation that confirms that we are going in the right direction.
However this is not as simple as it first appears: there may be “apparent” consolations which come from evil and that
move us away from God’s will. For example when a soul is committed to evil, they may experience a serenity or
peace in their wrongdoing; As Paul says in Romans 1, Satan can kill their conscience, and the resulting false peace
confirms the evil path as being the right one, even when it is not. The evil-one will do everything not to “rock the boat”
when he is lulling the soul into a false sense of security, perhaps even convincing the soul that “after all, the devil
does not exist,” and inviting the soul to go from mortal sin to mortal sin in peace. Just as in the Early Church, we can
be sure we are on the wrong path when whatever leads us to “peace” also involves doing what we know is objectively
evil, no matter how pleasurable or positive it seems. However when a soul is truly committed to God and God’s way,
we find that the Devil will work overtime to shake that commitment, even as the Lord will encourage the soul to
persevere on the road to mission, the Devil will attempt to persuade the soul that he or she is a failure, that God is
displeased with their weakness, and that the whole enterprise was a mistake from the beginning.

“Consolaciones” que muchas veces están caracterizadas como sentimientos de emoción son mas dificil de discernir.
Consolación en su raiz viene de Dios cuando estamos en el camino correcto, y es acompañado por “paz” pero no
solamente tranquilidad de sentimientos, pero paz que nos hace actuar. Cuando experimentamos la paz nos lleva a la
misión, en otras palabras lo que Dios quiere que hagamos. Esa es la experiencia de la consolación que confirma que
nosotros vamos en el camino correcto. Pero esto no es tan fácil como parece: pueden haber consolaciones
“aparentes” que vienen del mal y que nos mueven de la voluntad de Dios. Por ejemplo cuando un alma esta
cometida al mal, puede experimentar una serenidad o paz en los malos actos: Como Pablo les dijo a los Romanos 1,
Satánas puede matar sus conciencias y la falsa paz confirma el mal camino como si fuera el correcto, aunque no es.
El malo hará todo para no “mover el bote” pero él esta calmando el alma a un senso falso de seguridad, quién sabe
convenciendo al alma que “despues de todo, el diablo no existe,” e invitando al alma de ir de pecado mortal al
pecado mortal en paz. Tal como en los primeros tiempos de la Iglesia, podemos estar seguros que estamos en el
camino incorrecto cuando cualquier cosa nos lleva a la “paz” tambien implica que hacerlo que nosotros sabemos que
es malo, no importa que agradable o positivo paresca. Pero cuando un alma está verdaderamente encomendada a
Dios y en el camino de Dios, nosotros encontramos que el Diablo debe trabajar sobretiempo para poder sacudir esa
seguridad, aunque el Señor le dará coraje al alma de perseverarse en el camino a la misión, el Diablo tratará de
persuadir al alma que él o ella son un fracaso, que Dios no esta contento con sus debilidades y que todo este asunto
fué un error desde el principio.
