What to do
1. Vaya a su biblioteca local o busque en el Internet para ejemplos de las obras de Rembrandt. Hojea las

1. Go to your local library or search the internet for examples of Rembrandt’s work. Look through the images
you find. As a young artist, Rembrandt had success painting portraits, pictures of people that focus on the
face. He also painted many self-portraits, paintings of himself.
2. Discuss what you notice about Rembrandt’s style. What colors did he use? How do the paintings make you
feel? What might you learn about the people depicted by looking at the paintings?
3. Now it’s time to create your own self-portrait. Set up your workspace and the mirror. Make sure you can see
yourself while you work.
4. Study yourself in the mirror. Draw your face including your hair, eyes, nose, and mouth, along with the
upper part of your body.
Learn more together
Each artist develops his or her own style. Often, artists express a certain style that is similar to the styles of
other artists living and working during the same period. This is known as an art movement. Van Gogh was
part of the Impressionist movement (1800s). Jackson Pollack was a leader of the abstract expressionist
movement (1940s-1960s). It’s important for young artists to study famous artists and their major works to
inspire and develop their own artistic styles.
