A
regional nonprofit is asking
the City of San Diego to take
action in response to the 54
deaths, a 17% increase in
comparison to the previous
year, involving pedestrians
and cyclists in San Diego streets last year,.
Circulate San Diego’s “Vision Zero”
strategy calls for better street design, safer
sidewalks, and more traffic lights and other
traffic calming projects, given that speeding
is a key factor in these types of accidents.
The project also asks for city funds to be
allocated for a community education
campaign on this important topic.
“In San Diego, we should be safe no
matter where we are going or how we want
to get there. Unfortunately, last year was
one of the deadliest for San Diegans on city
streets,” stated Kathleen Ferrier, Director of
Circulate San Diego, during a press conference. “We could save lives through safe
street design, education, and enforcement,”
she added.
One such victim was Jaime Leonen, age
29, who died in September, 2015 after
being run over on Health Center Drive in
Kearny Mesa. Since the driver was not
under the influence of alcohol or drugs, no
charges were filed.
“Every time I go by that street I think of
my children, but also of Jaime and of how
he died there due to lack of safety,”
expressed Nicole Leon, a friend of Leonen’s
who remembers him as a happy guy who
was always in a good mood.
According to the non-profit’s data, the
most dangerous streets in the city are
University Avenue, Fifth Avenue &
Broadway, and Garnet Avenue in Pacific
Beach.
The initiative is also seeking the creation
of more bike lanes, as the number of people
riding to work is on the rise.
“We cannot continue losing our loved
ones due to a situation that is completely
preventable,” voiced Samantha Ollinger,
Executive Director of Bike SD.
To raise awareness, this coalition of
activists recently placed 54 pairs of shoes
in front of City Hall in remembrance of
each of the traffic accident victims lost
last year.
Although Vision Zero has already
garnered councilmember support, the
group wants funding to be allocated to
these infrastructure changes in order to
protect pedestrians and cyclists.

The Unpredictable Pope

State of
Imperial

“Absolutely
Awesome”
BY MARIO A. CORTEZ
Introduced by San Diego Port
Commissioner Dan Malcolm as
being “the coolest Mayor in the
country,” Serge Dedina gave his
state of the city address to a
capacity audience at the Boys and
Girls Club Hall of Imperial Beach
on Monday night. The mayor also
presented awards to valuable
members of the community and
other local organizations which
make a positive impact in the most
southwesterly city in the continental United States.
Mayor Dedina took some time to
speak with La Prensa San Diego
about some of the most important
improvements he has helped bring
to Imperial Beach prior to taking
the podium.

It’s history in the making.
For the very first time Pope
Francis travels to Mexico for
an intense weeklong visit to
some of the most violent
and poverty ridden areas in
the country. Mexico is no
stranger to Papal visits, but
this tour is already being
described as unpredictable.
The 79 year old
Argentinian Pontiff begins
his trip on Friday, February

addition to visiting the
Basilica of Our Lady of

stops planned in
Michoacán, Chiapas and the

El Paso, Texas.
The Pope says the
purpose of his visit isn’t
political, but given Mexico’s

troubles with violence, drug
trafficking, poverty and
corruption, his message will
inevitably have political
undertones. In a video
recently released by the
Vatican, the Pope states:
“The Mexico of violence, the
Mexico of corruption, the
Mexico of drug trafficking,
the Mexico of cartels, is not
the Mexico our Mother
wants.”
The issue of immigration
will certainly take center

El Sazón Latino
No cabe duda que las influencias
Latinas corren por toda la ciudad
de San Diego. Donde se siente más
la influencia es en el escenario
culinario. Con talento culinario de
México hasta el sur de América,
estos chefs latinos están calentando
las cocinas de San Diego.
Chef Martin San Román de
Dobson’s Bar & Restaurant está a
cargo de uno de los restaurantes
más viejos e icónicos de la ciudad.
Siguiendo con el ambiente clásico
del restaurante, Chef San Roman ha
incorporado platillos icónicos de su
propio repertorio.
Cocinando
sus platillos favoritos como el Lomo
Saltado, Ají de Gallina y Ceviche
Peruano. Sirena Cocina Latina
combina lo mejor de los platillos
Latino Americanos del mar y de la
tierra.
Conocido como el jefe de la
comida de Baja California, chef
Javier Plascencia de Bracero
Cocina de Raíz está preparando
platillos auténticamente mexicanos
en Little Italy.
