Staffdevelopment
Civil Rights organization, Austin Area Urban League celebrated their 37th Annual Equal
Opportunity Day Gala, and extended an invitation to our student leaders. The event was
held at the University of Texas at Austin’s AT&T Executive Education & Conference
Center. Dr. Randal Pinkett was the keynote speaker, the topic for the evening was “The
Fierce Urgency NOW…From Policies To Outcome”, and he gave a life changing message
to our young men. Honorees were recipients of the Corporate Leadership and Whitney
M. Young, Jr. awards. During the Gala, the organization announced that its members
were adopting the Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy, the students were
asked to come to the stage, and were proudly introduced to all in attendance. Some of
the other highlights for our young men were the excellent menu, interesting facts they
learned from Dr. Pinkett’s speech, and getting to meet the beautiful Miss Black Texas!
READ + LEAD = SUCCEED
Dr. Paul Cruz, interim superintendent, Trustees Bradley, and Teich, and AISD
Administration came to our campus to witness the generous $3000 donation presented to
our school by the Downtown Lions Club. The check was given to our library and books
were purchased for each student. Students will have the opportunity to choose a book
that interests them for their own personal library.
Student-Led Newsletter
We are so excited about our very first student led newsletter! Weekly, Mr. Trejo and his
students will write sport articles and write about events relating to the students in “The
Dragon Times Newsletter”. The newsletter will include an accumulation of different
categories: World, Local, Life & Arts, Business, etc. Look out Austin American Statesman!
Also, The Dragon Channel 5 will be a short podcast held weekly.
Drumline
Under the leadership of our Assistant Principal, Jon Bailey, GGYMLA now has its very own,
Drumline! Students can be found practicing each day afterschool in the gym! They look
good, they sound good, they are the GGYMLA Drumline! You won’t want to miss their debut
at our Dedication Ceremony!
Washington, D.C. Trip
Social Studies Department Chair and Program Leader, James Brewster, will lead a group of
Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy students on a World Strides DiscoverNow!
Program to Washington, D.C. Students will explore our nation’s most important historical
sites and experience incomparable learning moments.
Some of the sights include:

Lincoln Memorial where Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his “I Have a Dream”
speech
•
Discovering the true meaning of sacrifice at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
•
Capitol Hill
•
Numerous Smithsonian Museums, including the National Museum of Natural History
and the National Air and Space Museum
Future fundraising opportunities will be shared soon!
GGYMLA School Uniform Modification
Students voted to modify the uniforms. Please note: Parents do not have to
buy new uniforms. Uniforms will be worn daily. Compliance is expected.
The uniform items are as follows:
Shirt
• White, blue, gray, black, or purple button-down shirt
• White polo shirt – worn only on Fridays (no tie)

La Organización de Derechos Civiles, Austin Area Urban League celebro su 37th Gala
Anual de Igualdad de Oportunidades, y extendieron una invitación a nuestros estudiantes
líderes. El evento se llevó a cabo en la Universidad de Tejas en el AT&T Educación
Ejecutiva y Centro de Conferencias. El Dr. Randal Pinkett fue el orador principal, y el
tema de la noche fue “La Feroz Urgencia Ahora… De Politicas a Resultados”, y el dio un
mensaje a nuestro jóvenes que podría cambiarles la vida. Las personas Honradas
recibieron los premios Corporate Leadership y Whitney M. Young, Jr. Durante la Gala, la
organización anunció que sus miembros adoptaron a los jóvenes de Gus Garcia Young
Men’s Leadership Academy, le pidieron a los estudiantes subir al escenario, y
orgullosamente fueron presentados a la audiencia. Algunos de los otros momentos que
llamaron la atención de los jóvenes fue el exelente menú, los hechos interesantes que
aprendieron del discurso del Dr. Pinkett, y el conocer a la hermosa señorita Ms. Tejas!

Dr. Paul Cruz, superintendente interino, Miembros de la Mesa Directiva Sra. Bradley y
Sra. Teich, y la Administración de AISD asistieron a nuestro campus a presenciar la
generosa donación de $3,000 dólares entregada a nuestra escuela por el Club de Leones
del Centro. El cheque fue entregado a la Biblioteca y los libros fueron comprados para
cada estudiante. Estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de escoger un libro de su interés
para su biblioteca personal.
Student-Led Newsletter
Estamos muy emocionados acerca de nuestro primer periódico escrito por los estudiantes!
Semanalmente, el Sr. Trejo y sus estudiantes escribirán artículos de deportes y escribirán
acerca de eventos relacionados a los estudiantes en “El Periódico del Dragón”. El periódico
incluirá una acumulación de diferentes categorías: Mundial, Local, Vida & Artes, Negocios,
etc. Cuídense Austin American Statesman! También, El Canal 5 del Dragón será un podcast
que se hará semanalmente.
Drumline
Bajo el liderazgo de nuestro Sub-Director, Jon Bailey, GGYMLA ahora tiene su propio
Dumline! Los estudiantes se encuentran practicando todos los días después de la escuela en
el gimnasio! Se ven bien, se escuchan bien y ellos son el Drumline de GGYMLA! No puede
perderse su debut en la Ceremonia de Dedicación!
Washington, D.C. Trip
El Líder del Programa y del Departamento de Estudios Sociales, James Brester, guiará a un
grupo de estudiantes de Gus Garcia Young Men’s Lidership Academy en un Programa
Estudiantil “World Strides Discover Now! a Washington, D.C. Los estudiantes podrán explorar
nuestros más importantes sitios en nuestra nación y experimentar incomparables momentos
académicos.
Algunos de estos sitios incluyen:

GGYMLA Modificación del Uniforme
Los estudiantes votaron en modificar el uniforme. Por favor note: Los
padres de familia no tienen que comprar uniformes nuevos. Uniforme serán
usados diario. El uso diario es esperado.
