The Embassy of Spain in The Hague will collaborate in this year’s edition supporting the participation of two Spanish theatre companies. The audience will be able to enjoy the plays “La plus belle Poubelle” and “La Dernière Danse de Brigitte” by Zero en Conducta and “Goma Gom” by Chapertons. For more information about the program schedule see the Web page of Puppet International. 4 october A rt Ceramics and sculpture by Pablo Picasso at Beelden aan Zee Museum 13 October 2016 – 5 March 2017, The Hague T he Beelden aan Zee Museum in The Hague will present this fall “Picasso aan Zee, ceramics and sculpture”. The exhibition will provide an exciting image of the time he spent on the French Riviera, a vital period of his rich oeuvre in which he rediscovered ceramics, creating more than 4.000 works of different materials. Beelden aan Zee will exhibit some unique pieces in ceramics and sculptures from the best Picasso collections in Europe, some of which will be on show for the first time. More information can be found at the website of the Beelden Spanish Embassy The Hague/ october-november-december aan Zee Museum. 6 october L iterature Spanish stand at Children´s Book Fair The Hague October 16th, Cultural Centre Zuid57 T he Kinderboekenmarkt Foundation will organize, in cooperation with the Embassy of Spain, the 40th edition of the annual Children’s Book Fair at Cultural Centre Zuid57 in The Hague on Sunday October 16th. “Forever young” is the title of this edition where grandparents are playing the leading role. The festival will have a Spanish Pavillion focusing on Spanish-speaking countries and the language we share. Spanish illustrator Marta Altés, author of books like “I am an artist” or “The king of the house” will attend this edition; other participating artists are César Fernández Arias (from Venezuela) or Pilar González Virgil (from Peru). Several children workshops will also be organized. Spanish Embassy The Hague/ october-november-december More information can be found at the website of the Kinderboekenmarkt Foundation. 8 october C ultural Zenobia Conference on the ancient and medieval history of Spain 22 October 2016, auditorium University of Amsterdam O n Saturday 22 October the Zenobia Foundation, in collaboration with the Cervantes Institute, will organize a day of lectures on ancient and medieval history of Spain. The eleventh convention of this foundation, whose objective is the study of relations between East and West, will take place in the former Lutheran church in Amsterdam in the historic city centre, nowadays serving as the University of Amsterdam’s auditorium. Under the title “Spain, the Near East in the Far West”, eight speakers from seven international universities (Alcalá de Henares, Amsterdam, Leiden, London, Madrid, Nijmegen and Utrecht) will present, in Dutch and English, the rich history of intercultural relations in the Iberian Peninsula from the first contact with the Phoenicians to the Reconquista. This international festival features shorts, films, artist talks and installations since 2007, presenting the best animation artist from all over the world. The Spanish film “Psiconautas, los niños olvidados” by directors Pedro Rivero and Alberto Vázquez will be screened at this year’s edition. “Psiconautas” tells the story of Birdboy and Dinki, two friends struggling with their own reality. As explorers, they wish they could live in a better world, because the island where they live is polluted due to an industrial disaster. Furthermore, there will be 4 Spanish films competing for awards in different programs: “Alike” by Rafa Cano Mendez & Daniel Martinez Lara (Animated Short for Kids); “Living” by Cesar Diaz Melendez (The Music Channel); “Down by Love” by Jose Corral and “Decorado” by Alberto Vázquez (Animated Shorts); and “You are not the strongest” by Emilio Yebra (Political Animated Shorts). Special guest speakers are essayist and lecturer Jordi Gracia (University of Barcelona), who recently wrote a biography about Cervantes, and Maarten Steenmeijer, lecturer in Modern Spanish Cultures (University of Nijmegen). Who was Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra? What do we know about his life? What is his greatest contribution to world literature? What life experience led him to imagine such a revolutionary work as “Don Quixote”? The activity is part of the commemoration of the IV Century of Cervantes´ death. The conference will start at 19:00 hours and costs five euros per person; reservations to be made through: [email protected] More information can be found at the website of the Cervantes Insti- Spanish Embassy The Hague/ october-november-december tute. 16 L november iterature 10th Edition of the Spinoza Conference The lecture will be given by Spanish writer and philologist Alicia Giménez Bartlett T he 10th edition of the Spinoza Conference will be held at the University of Amsterdam on Thursday 24 November 2016. The Spinoza Conference is a joint initiative of the Embassy of Spain, the Cervantes Institute and the University of Amsterdam. Every year since 2005 it offers the opportunity to meet renowned Spanish-speaking writers and thinkers from Spain and Latin America, who lecture about any subject they wish. The speaker this year is Spanish writer and philologist Alicia Giménez Bartlett, well-known for her crime novels starring detective Petra Delicado. She was awarded with the Nadal Prize in 2011 and the Planeta Prize in 2015. The conference will focus on the formation of modern Europe from the point of view of youth culture. The concerts will take place on Friday December 2 at the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven and Saturday December 3 at MC Oosterpoort Groningen. Dorantes, who was born in Lebrija, near Seville (Spain), mixes North-African influences with flamenco and jazz, pursuing global sounds without forgetting his Andalusian roots.
