Stories matter. They are material. They shape our identity,
relationships and institutions. They define our history, setting it in
stone, and frame our futures and inevitably delimit possibilities.
Conflict stories are particularly constraining, fracturing networks and
social relations, by simplifying both situations, and people. And once
the conflict stories are in motion, they have a momentum of their
own. Conflicts from this perspective are very much a function of the
stories-in-use and their tellers, the people themselves, are caught in
stories they did not make, and cannot control. It follows that the
practice of conflict resolution is a narrative practice, one that is
focused on the evolution and development of these stories that
matter.
