Dear Family,
Your child is learning to divide fractions and mixed numbers. He or she will
use models and patterns to divide. In addition, your child will solve equations
with fractions and mixed numbers and learn how to estimate quotients.
Here is an activity to help your student learn to multiply and divide with
fractions.
Which Operation Did I Use?
Materials two sheets of paper, pencil
Help your child understand the results of multiplying and dividing
fractions by challenging him or her to identify missing operations.
Step 1 Without showing your child, multiply and divide two fractions,
such as _​ 23 ​and _​ 58 ​, on a sheet of paper. Write the product and quotient.

Step 3 Challenge your child to tell whether you multiplied or divided.
Ask whether multiplying two fractions results in a product greater or
less than the factors. (less) Ask whether dividing two fractions results in
a quotient greater or less than the divisor. (greater)
Observe Your Child
Focus on Math Practice 8:
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Help your child recognize that the problem “5 4 _​ 12 ​” means “How many
halves are in 5?” and understand that the quotient, 10, is greater than
the dividend. Repeat examples of multiplication and division by fractions
to firmly establish the reasoning used in the game.
