GERARDO HERNÁNDEZ, RAMÓN LABAÑINO, ANTONIO GUERRERO, FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ, and RENÉ GONZÁLEZ, are five Cubans
who were arrested by the FBI in Miami, Florida on Sept. 12, 1998. They were falsely charged with conspiracy to commit
espionage on the U.S. gov-ernment and were convicted on June 8, 2001, after a seven-month trial. The Cuban Five never
committed espionage nor did they plan to. Instead, their mission was monitoring and preventing the actions of terrorist groups
in Miami, which have carried out attacks on Cuba for years. The Cuban Five worked to save lives. On Sept. 11, 2001, the people
of the United States experienced the devastating blow of terrorism when almost 3,000 people died in the World Trade Center
attack. What most Americans don’t know is that the Cuban people have suffered terrorism for decades. For more than 50 years,
hundreds of terrorist attacks have been launched against Cuba from Miami by Cuban-exile paramilitary groups. Through
bombings, assassinations and other attacks, they have left 3,478 Cubans dead and 2,099 seriously injured. In August 1997, Fabio
di Celmo, an Italian with permanent residency in Montreal was killed by a bomb placed in a Havana hotel. By exposing the
terrorists’ plots, the Cuban Five saved the lives of many people. It is clear that their pros-ecution by the government was
politically motivated.
BACKGROUND HISTORY
In 1959, after the U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista was overthrown, Batista’s repressive police and army torturers
took refuge in Miami. Miami quickly became a base of C.I.A. operations against the Cuban Revolution. The C.I.A. recruited and
trained 4,000 Cuban right-wing exiles to carry out sabotage and terrorism. Cuba’s numerous appeals to Washington to
cooperate in stopping the terrorists were ignored. The Cuban Five were trying to do what U.S. law authorities have refused to
do, prevent terrorist attacks. After their arrest, the Cuban Five were subjected to extremely prejudicial news coverage in Miami;
they were held in solitary confinement for 17 months before trial; the judge denied their requests to move the trial out of
Miami. They were found guilty and condemned to sentences ranging from 15 years to double life. A federal appeals court
overturned their convictions in 2005, but the Bush administration appealed and the convictions were reinstated.
NEW EVIDENCE: WASHINGTON SECRETLY PAID MIAMI JOURNALISTS
What the Cuban Five and their attorneys did not know during trial was that the U.S. government was covertly paying Miami
journalists. These reporters covered the case of the Five before and during their trial, as well as during the jury’s deliberations.
The press irreparably prejudiced the Five with its inflammatory reporting. The presence of Miami “reporters” on the U.S.
payroll—through Radio and TV Martí—who posed as “independent” press, goes to the heart of the Five’s unjust conviction. They
were victims of a political prosecution and covert government propaganda operation as well. The Partnership for Civil Justice
Fund (PCJF) filed a lawsuit against the State Department in the District of Columbia’s federal court, based on the Freedom of
Information Act, given that the Department refused to hand over material in its possession on secret payments by the
government to Miami-based journalists and in Sept. 2013, a U.S. federal court instructed the State Department to hand over
material related to the payment of journalists who acted to the detriment of the Five.
FREEDOM CAMPAIGN FOR THE CUBAN FIVE
René González and Fernando González were released after completing an unjust sentence of over 13 and 17 years respectively.
They both returned to Cuba to a hero’s welcome. There is a national and worldwide campaign for the Cuban Five’s freedom and
it NEEDS YOU to spread the word and inform as many people as possible about this case, because only a “JURY OF MILLIONS”
will bring freedom for ALL the anti-terrorist Cuban Five.

GERARDO HERNÁNDEZ, RAMÓN LABAÑINO, ANTONIO GUERRERO, FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ, y RENÉ GONZÁLEZ, son cinco Cubanos
quienes fueron arrestados por el FBI el 12 de septiembre de 1998 y acusados falsamente de conspiración para cometer espionaje
contra el gobierno de los EE.UU. y fueron condenados el 8 de junio de 2001, después un juicio que duró siete meses. Los Cinco
Cubanos nunca cometieron espionaje, ni tampoco conspiraron para hacerlo, sino que su misión era monitorear y combatir los planes
de grupos terroristas en Miami, los cuales han llevado a cabo ataques contra Cuba durante décadas. Los Cinco estaban trabajando
para salvar vidas. El 11 de septiembre de 2001, el pueblo de los EE.UU. experimentó el golpe devastador del terrorismo, cuando cerca
de 3000 personas murieron en el ataque al World Trade Center. Muchos estadounidenses desconocen que el pueblo cubano también
ha sufrido el terrorismo por décadas. Por más de 50 años, cientos de ataques terroristas han sido lanzados contra Cuba por grupos
paramilitares de cubanos en exilio, basados en Miami. Su campaña de estallido de bombas, asesinatos y otros ataques, ha provocado
la muerte de 3478 cubanos y 2099 han resultado gravemente heridos. En agosto del 1997, Fabio di Celmo, un italiano de residencia
permanente en Montreal, fue asesinado resultando de una bomba colocada en un hotel en La Habana. Mediante el monitoreo de los
terroristas y revelando sus planes, los Cinco Cubanos protegieron la vida de muchas personas que hubieran resultado blanco de los
terroristas. No queda duda de que la persecución estadounidense de los Cinco Cubanos es basada en motivaciones políticas.
ANTECEDENTES
En 1959, después del derrocamiento del dictador cubano Fulgencio Batista, quien estaba recibiendo el apoyo de los EE.UU., los
verdugos de la policía represiva bajo Batista y los torturadores en su ejército, se refugiaron en Miami. De repente, Miami se convirtió
en una base de las operaciones de la C.I.A. contra la revolución Cubana. La C.I.A. reclutó y entrenó a 4000 cubanos de la derecha en
exilio de Miami, para realizar sabotajes y terrorismo. La multitud de los llamados que Cuba transmitió a Washington proponiendo que
cooperaran con el propósito de parar a los terroristas, fueron ignorados. Los Cinco Cubanos estaban tratando de hacer,
pacíficamente, lo que se han negado a hacer las autoridades de las fuerzas de la ley de EE.UU.: prevenir el terrorismo. Los Cinco
Cubanos, fueron víctimas de una amplia cobertura mediática negativa en los medios de Miami; fueron aislados en celdas de castigo
durante 17 meses antes que su caso fuera llevado al tribunal; la jueza denegó su solicitud de cambiar la sede del juicio para un lugar
fuera de Miami. Los Cinco Cubanos Fueron declarados culpables y condenados a penas de entre de 15 años a doble cadena perpetua.
Una corte federal de apelaciones anuló las condenas en el 2005, pero la administración de Bush apeló esta decisión y resultó en la
reintegración de sus condenas.
NUEVAS PRUEBAS: WASHINGTON REALIZÓ PAGOS SECRETOS A PERIODISTAS EN MIAMI
Lo que los Cinco Cubanos y sus abogados desconocían, mientras se celebraba el juicio, era que el gobierno de EE.UU. les pagó en
secreto a periodistas de Miami, quienes — al mismo tiempo que el gobierno llevaba a cabo su acusación — saturaron los medios de
Miami con informaciones que eran muy inflamatorias y perjudiciales para los Cinco. La presencia de periodistas de Miami en las
nóminas de pago del gobierno de los EE.UU. — a través de Radio y TV Martí — los cuales pretendían que reportaban como prensa
“independiente”, nos lleva al corazón de la injusta condena de los Cinco. Ellos no solo fueron víctimas de una acusación basada en
motivos políticos, sino también de una operación encubierta de propaganda perpetrada por el gobierno. El Fondo de la Asociación
para la Justicia Civil (PCJF, por sus siglas en inglés) presentó una demanda legal contra el Departamento de Estado de EE.UU., basada
en el Acta Libertad de Información, porque el departamento rehusó entregar los materiales en su posesión sobre los pagos secretos
del gobierno de Washington a periodistas en Miami y en septiembre del 2013, una corte federal de EE.UU. ordenó al Departamento
de Estado entregar materiales sobre el pago a periodistas que actuaron en perjuicio de Los Cinco.
LA CAMPAÑA PARA LA LIBERACIÓN DE LOS CINCO
René González y Fernando González fueron excarcelado tras haber cumplido las injustas condenas de más que 13 y 17 años
respectivamente. Ambos regresaron a Cuba recibiendo una bienvenida de héroes. Hay una campaña nacional y una internacional por
la liberación de los Cinco Cubanos que TE NECESITAN para correr la voz e informar al mayor número de gente posible acerca de este
caso, porque sólo un "JURADO DE MILLONES" logrará la libertad para TODOS los Cinco antiterroristas cubanos.
