ZONAMACO®
MÉXICO ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO 2011.
BIENVENIDOS.
Una vez más se llevará a cabo ZONAMACO® MÉXICO ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO con el objetivo de presentar las
últimas expresiones del arte contemporáneo nacional e internacional, que permitirán al público, a los galeristas,
a los coleccionistas, a los curadores y demás seguidores del arte, contar con una feria de arte contemporáneo
internacional en México.
Este año es muy especial para ZONAMACO®, debido a que hasta la fecha, resultará la edición más abarcadora.
Contamos con la presencia de 115 de las más prestigiadas galerías nacionales e internacionales, que a su vez
representan a más de 1000 artistas de arte contemporáneo.
Una vez más, es para nosotros un orgullo, presentar la sección ZONAMACO® SUR, curada por tercer año
consecutivo por Adriano Pedrosa, que este año presenta un proyecto interesante que ya ha generado gran
expectativa.
Por primera ocasión, se presenta la sección ZONAMACO® DISEÑO, reuniendo a diez de las más importantes
galerías de diseño. El objetivo de este nuevo pabellón es fomentar el interés del público en el mundo del diseño,
así como crecer en este sentido año con año las propuestas.
Una importante iniciativa que se ha tomado también este año, es la creación de la FUNDACIÓN ZONAMACO,
esto con el objeto de apoyar el arte contemporáneo a través de distintos apoyos a artistas, instituciones y
eventos culturales.
2011 es un año muy significativo, puesto que a pesar de ser la octava edición de ZONAMACO®, para mí
representa 10 años de trabajo desde que empecé con Muestra I en la Ciudad de Monterrey, y es una gran
satisfacción ver el crecimiento que ha tenido este proyecto, y el interés que ha generado en las galerías, los
coleccionistas y el público en general.
El fortalecimiento y crecimiento de ZONAMACO® ha traído consigo nuevos proyectos dentro de la feria. Por
ejemplo, en colaboración con el Gobierno del Distrito Federal y la Secretaria de Educación del Distrito Federal,
presentaremos un ciclo de conferencias con invitados relevantes que junto con diversas presentaciones de
libros, generarán un espacio de difusión del arte y un intercambio de ideas que seguramente reforzarán los
objetivos de la feria.
Es gratificante saber que el interés en ZONAMACO® no sólo ha aumentado por parte de las galerías y el
público, sino también por los patrocinadores que cada año se suman a nuestro esfuerzo por incentivar el arte
contribuyendo así, al éxito de este proyecto.
Quiero por lo mismo, extender un agradecimiento a nuestros patrocinadores: al Gobierno del Distrito Federal,
a la Secretaría de Educación del Distrito Federal, a Banamex, a Audemars Piguet, a Axa Seguros, a Tequila

WELCOME.
Once again we will be celebrating ZONAMACO ® MÉXICO ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO. Our intention to present
the latest expressions of national and international contemporary art continues. The public, gallerists, collectors,
curators and art fans will be able to attend an international contemporary art fair in Mexico.
This is a very special year for ZONAMACO® since is the largest edition so far. We are fortunate to have with
us more than 115 of the most prestigious national and international galleries, representing more than 1000
contemporary artists.
Once again its an honor to present the section ZONAMACO® SUR, curated for the third consecutive year by
Adriano Pedrosa. This year features an interesting project that has created a lot of expectation.
For the first time we are introducing the section ZONAMACO® DESIGN, thus bringing together ten important
design galleries. The goal of this new pavilion is to please and encourage the public’s interest in the world of
design as well as to keep growing every year.
An important initiative taken this year is the creation of FUNDACIÓN ZONAMACO. Its aim is to promote
contemporary art in many different ways; by supporting artists, institutions and cultural events.
2011 is a very significant year because, apart from being the eighth edition of ZONAMACO®, ten years have
passed since I began with Muestra I in Monterrey city and it’s a great satisfaction to see its growth and the interest
it has generated among gallerists, art collectors and public in general.
The growth and strengthening of ZONAMACO® has developed new projects within the fair. This year, in
collaboration with the Gobierno del Distrito Federal and the Secretaria de Educación del Distrito Federal, we’ll
be presenting a series of conferences with outstanding guests that, along with diverse book presentations, will
generate a diffusion space for art and the exchange of ideas that will surely reinforce the objectives of the fair.
Is gratifying to know that the interest in ZONAMACO® has not only increased on behalf of the galleries and the
public but also in the sponsors that each year join the effort to promote art thus contributing to the success of
this project.

Dear friends
Es para mi un honor participar en Zona MACO
2011 y dar la bienvenida a la Ciudad de México a
esta colectividad de creadores y a la comunidad
artística en general.
En la capital de la República Mexicana, quienes
tenemos la responsabilidad de formular la política
educativa, reconocemos el valor de las artes en
el desarrollo de la creatividad, la sensibilidad y la
imaginación, elementos que constituyen los pilares
de una formación sólida y humanista. Afirmamos
que el arte humaniza y vuelve mejores a las
personas, fomenta y fortalece la construcción de
ciudadanía.
En el Distrito Federal la educación ha sido uno de
nuestros temas prioritarios. Nuestra ciudad se ha
caracterizado en los últimos años por la constante
mejora de sus estándares educativos, los cuales
se sitúan en primer lugar a nivel nacional. Aquí
implementamos el “Movimiento Red Angel por la
Educación”, el cual vincula los programas sociales
del gobierno con el fin de mejorar la calidad
educativa y garantizar la permanencia escolar.
Con la convicción de seguir mejorando la calidad de
la educación, en la Ciudad de México impulsamos
las actividades artísticas y culturales dentro de las

Here in the capital of the Mexican Republic, those
of us who have the responsibility to formulate the
educative politics, acknowledge the value of the
arts in the development of creativity, sensibility and
imagination, elements that conform the pillars of
a solid and humanist formation. We affirm that art
humanizes and makes better people, it encourages
and strengthens the consolidation of citizenship.
In Mexico City education is one of our priority
matters. During the past years, our city characterizes
for the constant improvement of its educational
standards, which are number one in the country.
Here we implement the “Movimiento Red Angel por
la Educación”, which links the Government social
programs, with the goal of improving the quality of
the education and to guarantee the permanence in
school.
With the conviction to continue the improvement
of the quality of the education, in Mexico City we
support artistic and cultural activities within schools
and teaching centers. This event serves to reaffirm
the importance of the arts in the development of
the City and its rich cultural offer, which makes our
capital an obliged destination for art lovers and
world wide tourists.

Para mi es un motivo de orgullo recibir en la Ciudad
de México la feria internacional Zona MACO
2011 que reúne a dibujantes, pintores, escritores,
fotógrafos de más 20 países y que representa lo
mejor de la oferta artística de más de 120 galerías
de todo el mundo. Este evento transformará
nuestra ciudad en la capital mundial del arte
contemporáneo.
Esta gran urbe se caracteriza no solamente por ser
la cuna de innumerables creadores de vanguardia,
sino también por su formidable acervo artístico
y cultural. Los más de 150 museos, 7 sitios
arqueológicos, su extraordinaria gastronomía,
los monumentos históricos, así como sus 4 sitios
considerados patrimonio cultural de la humanidad,
entre otras muchas cosas, hacen de la nuestra
una de las ciudades con mayor oferta cultural en
todo el mundo. Ello sin duda reafirma el estatus
de la Ciudad de México como uno de los destinos
turísticos más importantes a nivel mundial.

here the international art fair Zona MACO 2011,
event that gathers over 900 authors, representing
the best offer of 90 galleries from all over the world.
This event will transform our city into the capital of
contemporary art in Latin America.
This great city characterizes not only for being
the crib of a number of avant-garde creators, but
also for its amazing artistic and cultural assets.
More than 150 museums, 7 archeological sites, its
extraordinary gastronomy, historical monuments
and its 4 sites declared patrimony of humanity,
among many other things, make Mexico City one

PREMIO TEQUILA CENTENARIO PARA ARTISTAS EMERGENTES
Con el propósito de promover la producción, distribución y comercialización de arte contemporáneo, así como la
difusión y valoración de obras de artistas emergentes, Casa Cuervo y ZONAMACO Feria de Arte Contemporáneo han
invitado a todas las galerías participantes en la feria ZONAMACO 2011 a presentar obras de artistas emergentes que
les gustaría impulsar.
El “PREMIO TEQUILA CENTENARIO” es un estímulo y un reconocimiento para los artistas contemporáneos
participantes, así como una guía para aquellos interesados en iniciarse en la compra de arte emergente, que además
de ser una buena inversión económica, también es un excelente medio para iniciarse en el coleccionismo y por lo tanto
en el disfrute de las obras de arte de manera cotidiana.
PERRIER ART CONTEST
Perrier se ha caracterizado por ser una marca vanguardista, creativa y elegante que promueve el arte y el talento. Este
año, Perrier crea una plataforma dentro de ZONAMACO para dar a conocer a nuevos artistas plásticos, estudiantes de
escuelas de arte que creen una obra de arte utilizando la imagen de la marca a través del concurso Perrier Art Contest.
Las obras serán evaluadas por un jurado conformado por reconocidas personalidades del ámbito artístico, editorial
y la industria, así como de directivos de la marca Perrier. Serán dos los premios otorgados: uno elegido por el Jurado
de Zona Maco con un valor de $10,000, otro elegido por el público a través de un sistema de votación en la página
Societé Perrier MX (www.societeperrier.mx) con un premio de $5,000 pesos.
PREMIO FOTOGRAFÍA LATINOAMERICANA PURIFICACIÓN GARCÍA
Con la intención de abrir su Colección de Fotografía a nuevas fronteras Purificación García convoca, dentro de la
prestigiosa feria ZONAMACO, el Premio Adquisición de Fotografía Latinoamericana, abierto a todos los artistas de
origen o residencia en América Latina que participan en la feria representados por las galerías que integran ZONAMACO.
El jurado del Premio estará integrado por Celia Sredni de Birbragher, critica de arte, editora y directora de la revista
ArtNexus y Osvaldo Sánchez, director del Museo de Arte Moderno de México, comisario y crítico de arte, dos expertos
con un claro criterio sobre los trabajos que se realizan en la fotografía actual, además de un representante de la
Colección de Fotografía Purificación García.
CHILANGO ARTE URBANO
Desde hace 7 años la revista Chilango destaca por promover las expresiones artísticas que se llevan a cabo en
la ciudad de México y apoyar el trabajo de nuevos creadores en los proyectos “Artistas emergentes Chilango” y
“Chilango arte contemporáneo”. En 2011, Chilango lanza el proyecto CHILANGO ARTE URBANO, que busca resaltar
el amor por la ciudad de México a través de la intervención de 7 bardas ubicadas en diferentes puntos de la capital.
Las obras y artistas que participan en CHILANGO ARTE URBANO serán presentados en el marco de Zona MACO
ÁRBOL HERMÈS: UN OBJETO DE ARTE
Desde siempre, Hermès ha estado involucrado con el arte y en especial ha demostrado un gran interés en
el arte contemporáneo apoyando a diferentes artistas a nivel mundial, tanto emergentes, como consagrados;
proporcionándoles espacios de exposición , como en las diferentes boutiques Hermès. Una de las boutiques de
Hermès de Paris México está localizada en la prestigiosa Avenida Masaryk, en Polanco; la cual tiene en el frente un
hermoso árbol de Jacaranda. Hermès transformó este árbol en un objeto de arte, trabajando junto con un reconocido
artista, quien realiza una instalación una vez al año; volviéndolo un objeto de arte y creando así una referencia
importante en el paisaje de Polanco y en especial de esta emblemática avenida.
Cada año, un artista diferente estará encargado de esta instalación, logrando así una tradición alrededor de nuestro
árbol. Hermès en conjunto con la Feria de Arte contemporáneo ZONAMACO está trabajando para la creación de
este proyecto de la mano de Tobias Ostrander, director del “Museo Experimental el ECO”. ZONA MACO junto con
el curador, acordaron las características importantes de este proyecto con el fin de escoger al mejor artista para que
plasmara su trabajo en el árbol. El curador seleccionó al artista tomando en cuenta a quienes han ganado ya un
reconocimiento en México y en el extranjero. Juntos han trabajado para desarrollar una instalación. Para este año se
ha elegido al Maestro Omar Barquet.

TEQUILA CENTENARIO EMERGING ARTIST AWARD
In order to promote the production, distribution and marketing of contemporary art, as well as broadcasting and
evaluating the work of emerging artists, Casa Cuervo and ZONAMACO Feria de Arte Contemporáneo (ZONAMACO
Contemporary Art Fair) invite all galleries participating in ZONAMACO fair to present works by their emerging artists who
would like encourage.
The “TEQUILA CENTENARIO AWARD” is an incentive and an acknowledgment for the contemporary artists who
participate in ZONAMACO, as well as a guide for those interested in starting to purchase emerging art, that in addition
to being a good investment, is an excellent way to become a collector, and as a result to be able to enjoy their works
of art for daily way.
PERRIER ART CONTEST
Perrier has been known as an avant-garde, creative and elegant brand that promotes the art and talent. This year, Perrier
creates a platform within Zona MACO to present new artists from art schools in mexico city who create a piece of art
using the image of the brand through the competition Perrier Art Contest.
The works will be judged by a jury of renowned personalities from the artistic, editorial and industry, and executives from
Perrier as well. There will be two prizes awarded: one chosen by the Jury of Zona Maco with a value of $ 10.000 pesos,
the other one chosen by the public through a voting system on page Societe Perrier MX (www.societeperrier.mx) with
a value of $ 5.000 pesos.
LATIN AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD, PURIFICACIÓN GARCÍA
In an endeavour to exhibit her Photography Collection to new audiences, Purificación García has presented the Latin
American Photography Purchase Prize within the prestigious fair Zona MACO. The award is open to all those artists
from or residing in Latin America who participate in the fair represented by the galleries which make up the Zona MACO.
The jury of the Prize is made up of Celia Sredni de Birbragher, art critic, chief editor and director of ArtNexus
magazine and Osvaldo Sánchez, director of Museo de Arte Moderno de México, curator and art critic, together with a
representative of the Purificación García Photography Collection. All of them are experts with clear criteria regarding the
work being carried out in present-day photography and they will award the special nature and quality of one or more
artists represented at Zona MACO.
CHILANGO URBAN ART
For the past 7 years, Chilango magazine has promoted the artistic expressions that take place in Mexico City, and
supported the work of new artists with the projects “Artistas emergentes Chilango” (Chilango emerging artist) and
“Chilango arte contemporáneo” (Chilango contemporary art). In 2011, Chilango releases the project CHILANGO ARTE
URBANO (Chilango street art), which objective is to stand out the love for Mexico City through the intervention of 7
walls located in different sites of the city.
The art works and artists that participate in CHILANGO ARTE URBANO will be presented in Zona MACO
HERMÈS TREE: ART OBJECT
Hermès has always been involved with art, and it has shown a great interest in contemporary art supporting different
artists world wide, both emerging and consolidated, providing them with exhibition spaces, such as the Hermès
boutiques. One of the Hermès boutiques is located in the prestigious Masaryk Avenue in Polanco; which has a beautiful
jacaranda tree outside. Hermès has transformed this tree into an art object, working along with a renowned artist, who
preforms an installation once a year; turning it into an art piece and thus creating an important reference at the Polanco
landscape and this emblematic avenue. Each year, a different artist is in charge of the installation.
Hermès, collaborating with ZONAMACO fair is working on the creation of this project, along side with Tobias
Ostrander, director of the ECO Museum. ZONAMACO and the curator determined the characteristics of this project
with the goal to chose the best artist to reflect his work on the tree. The curator selected the artist keeping in mind those
who have already achieve certain recognition in both Mexico and the rest of the world, together they have worked to
develop the installation. For this year artist Omar Barquet was chosen.

Galeria Nara Roesler is one of the most
established contemporary art galleries in
Brazil, having presented 10 artists at the
latest edition of the Bienal de Sao Paulo.
With over 250 square meters of exhibition
space the gallery’s program is based on the
constant dialogue between a core group of
artists from the generation that appeared
in the 60’s such as Helio Oiticica, Antonio
Dias and Antonio Manuel and a younger
generation which has been steadily gaining
recognition among their peers. Since 2004
Galeria Nara Roesler has been running
the Roesler Hotel, a program designed to
host art projects from international artists
and to foster collaboration with galleries
worldwide.

NUEVAS PROPUESTAS
Pablo León de la Barra
La sección de Nuevas Propuestas presenta a galerías con menos de 5 años de existencia, que exhiben a artistas
jóvenes y emergentes en espacios de 20 metros cuadrados. La sección Nuevas Propuestas ha existido desde
la creación de la Zona Maco en 2004, y desde 2006 cuenta con la participación de alrededor de 20 galerías. En
su primera edición en 2004, participaron galerías como Kurimanzutto de México y Maccarone de Nueva York,
hoy galerías respetadas y establecidas. Desde entonces, muchas de las galerías que han pasado a formar parte
de la sección principal de la feria, tuvieron su inicio en la sección de Nuevas Propuestas, incluyendo Proyectos
Monclova y Gaga de México, Travesía Cuatro de Madrid, Samson Proyects de Boston y Krinzinger de Viena.
Otras galerías que han participado en ediciones anteriores de Nuevas Propuestas, como La Central de Bogotá
y Revolver de Perú, este año participan en la sección Zona Maco Sur.
Las galerías en la sección Nuevas Propuestas son seleccionadas a partir de una convocatoria abierta. Este
año, en la 8 ª edición de la feria, Pablo León de la Barra fue invitado para seleccionar las galerías participantes.
Después de revisar más de 50 aplicaciones, 22 galerías fueron seleccionadas. Estas representan las propuestas
de vanguardia más interesantes de las Américas y Europa. Es importante señalar que de las galerías participantes, casi la mitad son de México, parte del compromiso de Zona Maco en apoyar el desarrollo de la escena
joven y emergente de las galerías de arte del país; es interesante que 5 de estas galerías no son de la Ciudad
de México, hay una de Cholula, una de Chihuahua, una de Oaxaca, y dos galerías de Guadalajara. En cuanto
a las galerías internacionales participando este año, 6 vienen de los Estados Unidos (3 de Nueva York, 2 de
Miami, 1 de Los Ángeles), 5 de Europa (2 de Madrid, 1 de Londres, 1 de Bruselas y 1 de París), y 3 de Centro y
Sur América (Argentina, Costa Rica y Puerto Rico). De todas las galerías que participan en Nuevas Propuestas,
10 están participando en Zona Maco por primera vez. La idea de contar con un curador invitado como parte de
la selección tiene por objeto no sólo garantizar la calidad de las galerías participantes, el curador también actúa
como apoyo a las galerías más jóvenes, ofreciéndoles asesoramiento y orientación antes y durante la feria.
Creemos que las galerías, la feria, los artistas, así como los curadores, coleccionistas y el público visitante se
beneficiará de estos esfuerzos, que consolidan a la sección de Nuevas Propuestas como una de las plataformas
más interesantes para las galerías jóvenes en la escena del arte contemporáneo internacional.
Pablo León de la Barra es comisario independiente, investigador, escritor y productor cultural. Nacido en la
Ciudad de México en 1972, vive en Londres desde 1997. León de la Barra es Doctor en Historia y Teoría de Arte
y Arquitectura por la Architectural Association de Londres. León de la Barra ha curado entre otras exposiciones
‘To Be Political it Has to Look Nice’ (2003) en apexart/Nueva York; ‘PR04 Biennale’ (2004 co-curador), en Puerto
Rico; ‘George and Dragon at ICA’ (2005), en el ICA/Londres; ‘Glory Hole’ (2006), Architecture Foundation/Londres; Sueño de Casa Propia (2007-2008) con Maria Ines Rodriguez, en el Centre de Art Contemporaine/Ginebra, Casa Encendida/Madrid, Casa del Lago/Ciudad de Mexico; ‘This Is Not America’ en BetaLocal/San Juan,
Puerto Rico (2009); ‘El Noa Noa’, en Bogota, Colombia (2009); ‘Tristes Tropiques’, en The Barber Shop/Lisboa
(2010); ‘Incidentes de Viaje en Centro America, Chiapas, Yucatan y otros lugares’, en Centro Cultural de España/
Guatemala (2010); ‘To Know Him is to Love Him/Cerith Wyn Evans’ en Casa Barragan/Ciudad de Mexico (2010).
Actualmente prepara ‘Incidentes de Viaje Espejo en Yucatan y otros lugares’, en el Museo Tamayo que inaugura en Julio 2011. Ha escrito para las siguientes publicaciones: Frog/Paris, Spike/Austria, PinUp/Nueva York,
Purple/Paris, Wallpaper/London, Celeste/Mexico. Fue co-director de ‘24-7’ un colectivo curatorial en Londres
(2002-2005); director artístico de la galería ‘Blow de la Barra’, Londres (2005-2008). También es el editor de su
propio blog http://centrefortheaestheticrevolution.blogspot.com que se ha convertido en un punto de referencia
para la comunidad artística internacional.

almost half are from Mexico, demonstrating Zona Maco’s strong commitment to supporting the development
of Mexico’s young and emerging art gallery scene, more interesting yet is that 5 of this galleries are not from
Mexico City, with galleries from Cholula, Chihuahua, Oaxaca, and 2 galleries from Guadalajara participating.
Regarding the international galleries in New Proposals this year, we have 6 from the United States (3 from New
York, 2 from Miami, 1 from Los Angeles), 5 from Europe (2 from Madrid, 1 from London, 1 from Brussels and 1
from Paris), and 3 from Central and South America (Argentina, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico). Of all the galleries
participating in the New Proposals section, 10 are participating in Zona Maco for the first time. The idea of having an invited curator as part of the selection aims not only to ensure the quality of the participating galleries, but
the curator also acts as support to the younger galleries, offering them advise and guidance before and through
the fair. We believe the galleries, the fair, the artists and the visiting collectors, curators and public will benefit
from these efforts, which consolidates the New Proposals section as one of the most interesting platforms for
young galleries within the international contemporary art world.
Pablo León de la Barra is an independent curator, researcher, writer, adviser, and cultural producer born in
Mexico City in 1972, he lives in London. León de la Barra has a PhD in History and Theory of Art and Architecture from the Architectural Association, London. He has curated among other exhibitions ‘To Be Political it Has
to Look Nice’ (2003) at apexart in New York; ‘PR04 Biennale’ (2004 co-curator) MM Proyectos, Puerto Rico;
‘George and Dragon at ICA’ (2005), ICA-London; ‘Glory Hole’ (2006) at the Architecture Foundation-London;
Sueño de Casa Propia (2007-2008) with Maria Ines Rodriguez at Centre de Art Contemporaine-Geneve, Casa
Encendida-Madrid, Casa del Lago-Mexico City, and Cordoba, Spain; ‘This Is Not America’ at BetaLocal in San
Juan, Puerto Rico (2009); ‘El Noa Noa’ in Bogota, Colombia (2009); ‘Somewhere Under the Rainbow’, San
Juan, Puerto Rico (2010); ‘Tristes Tropiques’ at The Barber Shop in Lisbon (2010); ‘Incidents of Travel in Central
America, Chiapas, Yucatan and Elsewhere’, at the CCE, Guatemala (2010); and ‘To Know Him Is To Love Him’,
Cerith Wyn Evans at Casa Barragan, Mexico City (2010); He is currently preparing ‘Incidents of Mirror Travel
in Yucatan and Elsewhere’, which will open at Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City in Summer 2011. León de la
Barra writes for the following publications: Frog-Paris, Spike-Austria, PinUp-New York, Purple-Paris, WallpaperLondon, Celeste-Mexico. He was co-director of ‘24-7’ an artists-curatorial collective in London from 2002-2005
and artistic director of ‘Blow de la Barra’ gallery in London from 2005-2008. He is also the editor of his own blog

A pesar de llevarse a cabo en la Ciudad de México con una mayoría de artistas y galerías originarias de América
Latina, Zona Maco SUR, la sección de proyectos de Zona Maco, siempre se ha resistido al territorio estrictamente
Latinoamericano y a los límites geográficos. Los márgenes y los límites siempre invitan al cuestionamiento. Entonces,
Zona Maco Sur ha tomado la denominación más abierta, poética e imprecisa de Sur, y desde su inicio ha emparejado artistas de América Latina con artistas de África, Europa del Este y el Medio Oriente. En ocasiones, otros artistas
han sido invitados a Zona Maco SUR (desde Europa Occidental hasta Estados Unidos), aún en estos casos, sus
proyectos han explorado referencias y fuentes locales. Dentro un marco tan abierto, Zona Maco SUR no tiene un
criterio rígido. Si el acercamiento inicial en 2009 era el de invitar artistas y galerías que no habían expuesto en la
Ciudad de México, ahora en su tercera edición, la sección reúne por primera vez un buen número de galerías locales.
La cantidad de proyectos individuales ha crecido de 15 en 2009, a 20 en 2010 y este año serán 22. Así mismo, el
espacio de exhibición también se ha incrementado en tamaño desde la primera edición y desde el año anterior la arquitectura de esta sección crea una configuración distinta como un parcours de la exhibición. Artistas y galerías son
invitados por el curador a participar y no se aceptan aplicaciones. El contexto de la feria ofrece una plataforma para
probar ciertas yuxtaposiciones y para tomar ciertos riesgos que una exhibición dentro de una institución podrían ser
limitados. En este sentido, el énfasis permanece en el artista y su presentación individual.
El enfoque en artistas mujeres en 2011 no debe ser tomado como una propuesta feminista, más bien refleja el interés
e investigación del curador. Zona Maco SUR es un proyecto flexible que puede tomar distintas configuraciones
cada año, respondiendo a la investigación curatorial y a las conversaciones con artistas y galerías que el proceso
implica. Para 2011 esta investigación llevó de manera orgánica hacía mujeres artistas, algo que remonta a mi propio
contexto brasileño, en donde las principales figuras del arte contemporáneo son mujeres. Zona Maco Sur evoca el
programa de exhibición del Museu de Arte Pampulha en Belo Horizonte de 2002-2003, misma que curé en colaboración con Rodrigo Moura, la cual era dominada por artistas mujeres, no como estrategia pragmática, si no como un
resultado final; muchas de ellas aparecen ahora en la Ciudad de México--- Carla Zaccagnini, Débora Bolsoni, Marilá
Dardot, Rosângela Rennó, Valeska Soares y Sandra Cinto. Zona Maco SUR tiene mucho de el mismo espíritu, sin
embargo, también agranda el objetivo a artistas jóvenes y emergentes, algo típico en las secciones de proyectos,
a fin de rodear a artistas mayores e históricas ---Geta Bratescu, de Bucarest, Margarita Paksa de Buenos Aires y
Regina Silveira y la fallecida Mira Schendel de São Paulo. Zona Maco Sur permanece como un experimento, y como
tal es únicamente posible en una plataforma como la que ofrece Zona Maco en México.

Despite being held in Mexico City, with a majority of artists and galleries originating from Latin America, Zona Maco
Sur, the project room section of Zona Maco, has always resisted the strictly Latin American territorial or geographic
boundaries. Margins and limits always call for questioning. Thus, Zona Maco Sur has taken up the more open, poetic
and imprecise denomination of Sur [South], and since its inception has paired artists from Latin America with those
from Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. At times other artists have also been invited to Zona Maco (from
Western Europe and the United States), yet in these few outside cases their projects have explored local sources and
references. Within such an open and framework, Zona Maco Sur has no ossified criteria, and if the initial approach
in 2009 was to invite artists and galleries that had not exhibited in Mexico City, now in its third edition, the section
gathers a number of local galleries for the first time. The number of solo projects has grown from 15 in 2009, to 20 in
2010, and 22 this year. The exhibition space has also increased in size since the first edition, and since last year the
architecture of the section creates a distinct configuration as an exhibition parcours. Artists and galleries are invited to
participate by the curator, and no applications are accepted. The context of the art fair offers a platform to test certain
juxtapositions and to take certain risks that an exhibition in an institution might otherwise constrain. In this respect,
the emphasis remains on the artist and her individual presentation. The focus on women artists in 2011 is not to be
regarded as a feminist proposition, but reflects quite simply the interest and research of the curator. Zona Maco Sur
is a flexible project that may take different configurations each year, responding to the curatorial research and the
conversations with artists and galleries that the process entails. For 2011, the research led quite organically to women
artists, something that harks back to my own Brazilian background, where the leading figures of contemporary art are
women. Zona Maco Sur echoes the exhibition program at Museu de Arte Pampulha in Belo Horizonte in 2002–2003,
which I co-curated with Rodrigo Moura and which was dominated by women artists not as a programmatic strategy,
but as an end result; many of these appear now in Mexico City—Carla Zaccagnini, Débora Bolsoni, Marilá Dardot,
Rosângela Rennó, and Sandra Cinto, Valeska Soares. Zona Maco Sur 2011 has much of the same spirit. Yet it also
enlarges the focus on emerging and younger artists, so typical of project room sections, in order to encompass senior
and historical figures—Geta Bratescu, from Bucharest, Margarita Paksa, from Buenos Aires, and Regina Silveira and
the late Mira Schendel, from São Paulo. Zona Maco Sur remains an experiment, and as such, it is only possible on a
platform such as the one offered to us by Zona Maco in Mexico City.

I have long thought about how Balkanized is
the Latin American portion of the Americas.
There are barely any connecting bridges,
there is a large animosity between countries,
and most of the contact between cultures
is mediated by the exterior –the gaze that
the given cultures have casted alternatively
towards France for instance, or towards the
United States.
This state of affairs is remarkable, considering that there is a shared language, a shared
history of colonization, and also, considering
the so-called “Panamerican Dream”Strangely
enough, one of the few cohesive elements
that I found within the process of construction of Latin-American identities, has been
broadcast media –particularly so the programming that was put out by Televisa during
the 60s, 70s, 80s.
Throughout Latin America, we all watched
the same soap operas, the same American
tv shows dubbed in a bland, accent-less,
generic Spanish that we all had to make an
unconscious effort to claim as ours.
So, even tough we denied each other to the
point of never thinking beyond the borders
of our own national identity, we probably
all shared similarly fueled dreams, teenage
crushes, the desire for the same product, a
kind of identity which in advertising is called
“LatAm”*.
The intention of this installation is to highlight
the paradoxes of the mediated process of
construction of a Latin-American cultural
identity(ies), while also examining the fabric
of Mexican politics during the second half of
the 20th century.
*(Advertising agencies such as Ogilvy &
Mather, for which I worked for a couple of
years, coined the term “LatAm” to describe
the product campaigns that are to be broadcasted throughout the entire Latin-America).

Tras hacerse un nombre en Miami en 2001,
Galería Casas Riegner abrió sus puertas
en Bogotá en 2005. Desde entonces se
ha tomado el reto de promover el arte

Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art was officially inaugurated in March of 2001.
Run by Cristina Guerra, the gallery predominantly focuses the conceptual work of
22 contemporary artists.
Besides participating in high-profile art
fairs, the gallery also organizes exhibitions
by foreign guest curators, conceived as
platforms of exchange, discussion and
expansion.
The gallery follows a tight schedule of
eight to nine exhibitions per year, which are
planned over a year in advance. Besides
this active program, during several short
interludes, the gallery hosts book launches
and performances/happenings.
The gallery also supports many of its artists’ publications and promotes artists’ exhibitions in local and foreign museums and
institutions by extensively communicating
these events to its audience of visitors and
the local and international press.
