Grant allows beautification of St. Cloud’s Mount Peace Cemetery

St. Cloud, Fla. (July 13, 2011) – City of St. Cloud was awarded an Urban and Community Forestry
Grant from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Forestry, in
2010. The $7,760 grant was dedicated to the Mount Peace Cemetery Makeover Project, a five-year plan
that began in June 2010.
The project is intended to restore and beautify the city’s historical cemetery. Parks and Recreation
Department staff and Tree Advisory Committee (TAC) volunteers have been working on the project
since June 2010. The award has greatly assisted in the financial aspects of the project.
“The grant allowed our staff and TAC volunteers to begin with an inventory and evaluation of 251
trees,” explained City of St. Cloud Landscape/Beautification Manager Kimberly Duffy. “Two statecertified arborists prioritized each tree on its species, structure, and conditional health. Twenty trees
were evaluated as poor and the grant supported the removal of these hazardous trees. By the end of this
month, staff and the TAC volunteers will have planted 250 new trees - half of these grown within the
City’s nursery. In the fall, additional landscaping will be added to specific areas; continuing to respect
this peaceful and majestic environment. It is a privilege to be awarded this grant and we appreciate it
very much.”

St. Cloud, Fla. (13 de julio del 2011) – Ciudad de St. Cloud recibió una subvención en el 2010 del
Urban and Community Forestry del Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division
of Forestry. La subvención de $7.760 fue dedicada al Mount Peace Cemetery Makeover Project, un plan
de cinco años que comenzó en junio del 2010.
La intención del proyecto es el de restaurar y embellecer el cementerio histórico de la ciudad. El
personal del Departamento de Parques y Recreación y voluntarios del Comité Consultivo de Árboles
(TAC) han estado trabajando en el proyecto desde junio del 2010. La subvención ha ayudado en muchos
aspectos financieros del proyecto.
“La subvención le ha permitido a nuestro personal y volunarios del TAC a comenzar con un
inventario y evaluación de 251 árboles”, explicó City of St. Cloud Landscape/Beautification Manager
Kimberly Duffy. “Dos arbolistas certificados por el estado priortizaron cada árbol en su género,
estructura, y salud condicional. Veinte árboles fueron evaluados como débiles y la subvención apoya la
eliminación de estos árboles que se convierten en riesgos. Al terminar este mes, nuestro personal y los
voluntarios del TAC habrán sembrado 250 nuevos árboles - la mitad de éstos cosechados en el jardín de
la Ciudad. En el otoño, más jardinería será añadida al paisaje en áreas específicas. Continuaremos
respetando este ambiente tranquilo y majestuoso. Es un privilegio recibir esta subvención y la
apreciamos muchísimo”.
