SPANISH THEMATIC UNITS
Note to my classes:
September 8 test words in red

Throughout the year my students are required to memorize lists of thematically arranged
vocabulary required by the district. Approximately once a month I test on whatever unit is
targeted in our new district-mandated pacing guide.
For example, in red below are the units expected to be learned by all district students in level I
Spanish classes by mid-September. That first test – September 8, 2008, will be given as a straight
translation test from Spanish to English, covering fifty words.
All subsequent tests will align with district pacing guides as stated above. Each monthly test will
include words from all thematic units back to the beginning of the year. This keeps the learning
cumulative and results in high scores on the end of year district assessments.
Testing cumulatively keeps the students honest. They can’t just memorize words for one test and
then forget them, which is a way of assessing students that needs to end in our nation’s schools.
Teaching for short term knowledge with no accountability beyond that one test, ultimately,
prepares our students for failure. My belief is that if the students hear the words in this extensive
list often in class, in various contexts in Spanish, and if they do their part by learning the words at
home, they will succeed on the end of year district assessments.
The tests, except for the first fifty word test, assess one hundred words each. The grades earned
on these thematic unit tests account for 50% of the student’s overall grade each grading period.

is a free download and can be reproduced on other sites without
permission of the owner of this website. Both Spanish and Spanish
Thematic Unit CDs can be copied by other teachers at no charge.
