Patient Safety: Central Line Bundle
Dear Parents,
Your child has a central line. It is important that we
work together to prevent your child from getting a
central line infection. If your child gets a central line
infection it can be very dangerous.
The following tips can help prevent an infection. These
are important for your child’s safety. We want you to be
your child’s advocate. Speak up if you see any member
of your child’s healthcare team not following these
important steps with the central line. If you are not
sure what a central line is or where it is on your child,
please ask your nurse or other member of the team.
Here are some important tips to follow
• You and all staff members should always wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before
doing anything with your child.
• Anyone handling the central line should wash their hands or use hand sanitizer AND
then put on gloves.
• The place used to enter the central line should have a disinfectant cap on it. It is used
to protect the central line from germs. It may also need to be scrubbed with alcohol
for 15 seconds and allowed to dry for 15 seconds before entering the line.
• Your child should have a bath each day to help keep their skin clean. Your child’s
bed sheets should also be changed every day. If your child is too sick to have these
done, even washing your child’s hands, face, and neck with warm water and a
washcloth is helpful.
• The dressing on the central line should always be clean, dry, and intact. The edges
of the dressing should be in contact with your child’s skin.
• The dressing should have a label with the date of when it was changed. It will be
changed 7 days from that date or sooner if needed.
• Every day the healthcare team should discuss if the central line is still needed or if it
can be removed.
• Please try to avoid toys, extra blankets, and other items from collecting in your child’s
bed and room. These can get germs on them and lead to an infection.
• If you change your child’s diaper, please use gloves. Ask your child’s nurse for an
absorbent white pad. Place the dirty diapers and wipes on the absorbent white pad
and throw them away.

Su niño(a) tiene una vía central. Es importante que trabajemos juntos para prevenir cualquier infección, ya que

A continuación encontrará algunas claves importantes
para la seguridad de su niño(a) en cuanto a prevenir
infecciones. Queremos que usted asuma el papel de

medidas importantes, dígalo. Si no está seguro(a) de lo
que significa una vía central o donde se encuentra en
su niño(a), pregúntele a la enfermera o a cualquier otro
miembro del equipo.
Es importante que siga los siguientes puntos:
• Tanto usted como los miembros del equipo de cuidado de salud deben siempre lavarse las
manos o usar un desinfectante a base de alcohol antes de interactuar con su niño(a).

central.
• Todos los sitios que se utilizan para tener acceso a la vía deben tener colocada una tapa
desinfectante para protegerla de gérmenes. Si la tapa no está, el sitio de entrada debe ser
frotado durante 15 segundos y luego dejar secar durante 15 segundos.
• Su niño(a) debe bañarse a diario para mantener la piel limpia. También debe cambiar la
ropa de cama a diario. Si la condición de su niño(a) es delicada y no puede hacer esto, al
menos trate de lavarle las manos, la cara y el cuello con una toalla húmeda y tibia.
• El vendaje de la vía central debe siempre estar limpio, seco e intacto. Los bordes del
vendaje deben estar en contacto con la piel de su niño(a).
• El vendaje debe tener una etiqueta que indique cuándo se debe cambiar. Se debe cambiar
el vendaje cada siete días o antes si es necesario.
• El equipo de los cuidados de la salud debe indicarle todos los días si necesita quitar o
dejar la vía central de su niño(a).
• Trate de evitar que se acumulen juguetes, sábanas adicionales, y cualquier otro artículo
en la cama o habitación de su niño(a), ya que éstos pueden traer consigo gérmenes que
puedan causar infecciones su niño(a).
• Por favor use guantes si usted le cambia el pañal a su niño(a). Pídale una almohadilla
absorbente blanca a la enfermera de su niño(a) y úsela para colocar dentro los pañales y
las toallas absorbentes desechables, y luego tírela a la basura.
