ON THE SPlNA INTERNA OF THE STERNUM OF SOME PASSERihT BiRDS MORONY(1985, pp. 387-388) described a &que skeletal structure in [Sericossypha] albocristata in the fonn of an unpaired ossified bridge-like stmcture of the sternurn extending from the ventral manubrial spine to the dorsal spinen. In the belief that such a structure had not previously been morded in Passerifomes, he proposed to name it Processus manubrii or manubrial proccss. in Piranga However, the stcucture had in fact already been d&bed (CLARK,1913), Bubalomis albirostrlr (CHAPIN,1917). Fringilla teydea, FringiIla coelebs. Cisticola juncidb, Cisticola robusta, Cisticola galactotes. and Cisticola exilis (MORENO,1984) -and has since been found in other species (MORENO,1985, 1986). This note serves not merely to clarify a priority issue but also one of nomenclature. CHAPIN(1917) and MORENO(1984) used the name spina interna for this structure and the name processus manubrii proposed by MORONY (1985) should not be aaepted for two reasons: Firstly, the stmcture is clearly homologous to the spina interna found in some avian Orders, the name having been originally defined by Fiirbringer (... «und eine das Septum innen begrenznide unpaare Spina interna welche die beiden Labia interna verbindet)), 1888, p. 158) and taken up by the Nomina et al., 1979). Anatornica Avium (BAUMEL Secondly, the name manubrial process could be confusing because some authors (OWN, 1866, pp. 28-29, SHUFELDT, 1882, p. 681; SHUFELDT,1909, p. 294) have used it to indicate the whole manubriwn sterni when it is almost wmpletely reduced, as occurs in some Falconidae. Moreover, the processus manubrii of MORONY(1985) cannot be a «bridgelike stmcture» extending «from the Spina interna to the Spina externa of the Rostnun stemú, (p. 388) because, unless the stmcture under discussion is it, there is no spina interna in the sternwn of Passeriformes (GAWW, 1893, p. 85). 295 NOTAS BREVES SUMMARY The Processus manubrii d e b e d by MORONY (1985) as a «unique» skeletal structure of the s t m u m of Seriocossypha albocrisiata have in fact already k n described by CLARK(1913). CHAPIN(1917). and MORENO (1984) in other passerine species. Following Fürbringer (1888) and the nomenclature took up by the Nomina Anatomica Avium (BAUMEL et al., 1979) this structure should be named sipina interna instad of Proaessus manubrii. sternum. morphology. Passerifomes.
