(Montevideo, November 5). Antel and Google announced today plans to build a new
undersea fiber-optic cable connecting the cities of Maldonado (Uruguay) with Santos
(Brazil). Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks (ASN), the undersea cable subsidiary of
Alcatel-Lucent is responsible for the project .
The cable, which will span 2,000 kilometers and have 6 fiber pairs, will increase the overall
bandwidth of the existing subsea cable systems reaching by 90 Tbps (terabits per second)
according to estimates. The system is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
This investment complements MONET, another submarine fiber-optic cable which will
connect Santos and Fortaleza, in Brazil, with Boca Raton in the United States, and is
currently under construction. MONET is being built by a consortium of companies which
also includes Google and ANTEL.. The last cable built between Brazil and Uruguay dates
back to 1994.
At the signing of the joint venture with Google, ANTEL´s President, Andrés Tolosa, shared
the company´s efforts to bring Internet to all Uruguayans: “Since 2012, our Fiber to Home
program, has connected over 50% of Uruguayans homes with optic fiber. The growing local
software industry, the new services for streaming 4K content, the advent of the Internet of
Things and our new Datacenter, which will allow expanding services regionally and
worldwide, all call for an increase in stable, high quality connectivity”.
In the same line, Pedro Less Andrade, Director of Public Policy and Government Relations,
celebrated this second milestone in less than one year: “This investment ratifies our
commitment with Uruguay and with Latin America as a whole to help build infrastructure
necessary for improving broadband connectivity in the region”.
Commenting on the project, Philippe Dumont, President of Alcatel-Lucent Submarine
Networks said: “We are very pleased to work with Antel and Google and support them in
delivering the webscale connectivity needed to further stimulate broadband capacity in
Uruguay and in South America.”

[Montevideo, Uruguay, 05 de noviembre de 2015]. Antel y Google anunciaron hoy planes
para construir un nuevo cable submarino de fibra óptica que conecte las ciudades de
Maldonado (Uruguay) con Santos (Brasil). Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks (ASN), la
filial de cables submarinos de Alcatel-Lucent es el proveedor seleccionado para este
proyecto .
Este cable, con una longitud de 2000 kilómetros y 6 pares de fibras, aumentará el ancho de
banda total de los sistemas existentes de cables submarinos hasta alcanzar los 90 Tbps
(terabits por segundo), según las estimaciones, y se espera que el nuevo sistema esté
completado a finales del año 2017.
Esta inversión se complementa con el proyecto MONET, otro cable de fibra óptica
submarino que conectará las ciudades de Santos y Fortaleza, en Brasil, con Boca Ratón en
los Estados Unidos, y que se encuentra actualmente en construcción. MONET es llevado
adelante por un consorcio de empresas que también incluyen a Google y ANTEL. El ultimo
cable desplegado entre Brasil y Uruguay data del año 1994.
En la firma de este proyecto conjunto con Google, el Presidente de ANTEL, Andrés Tolosa,
compartió sus esfuerzos por llevar Internet a todos los uruguayos: "Desde 2012, nuestro
programa de Fibra al Hogar ha conectado a más del 50% de los hogares uruguayos
mediante fibra óptica. El crecimiento de la industria local de software, los nuevos servicios
de streaming de contenido 4K, el advenimiento de la Internet de las cosas y el nuevo
datacenter, que permitirá ampliar los servicios a nivel regional y mundial, requieren un
aumento en conectividad estable y de alta calidad.”
En la misma línea, Pedro Less Andrade, Director de Políticas Públicas y Asuntos
Gubernamentales de Google Hispanoamérica, celebró este segundo logro en menos de un
año: "Esta inversión ratifica nuestro compromiso con Uruguay y con toda América Latina
de ayudar a construir la infraestructura necesaria para mejorar la conectividad de banda
ancha en la región.”
Sobre el proyecto, Philippe Dumont, Presidente de Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks
comentó: “Estamos muy complacidos de colaborar con Antel y Google, y de ayudarles a
facilitar la conectividad a escala web necesaria para continuar dinamizando la capacidad de
acceso de Uruguay y de Sudamérica.”
