East Area Adult School offers English classes and GED prep classes during both day and evening hours at several locations throughout Polk County? In addition to the English (ESOL) class featured below taught by Ms. Sydney Swanson,
the Gause Riverside campus in Ft. Meade has another English class taught by Ms. Sherri Brownkatz and a GED prep
class taught by Ms. Melanie Sullivan. Day classes are held Monday through Friday from 8am to noon. Evening classes
are on Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm-9pm. East Area Adult also offers classes in Eagle Lake, Frostproof, Lake
Wales, Winter Haven, Haines City, and Davenport. Our main campus in Auburndale offers day and evening classes in

In the Spotlight ~ March 2015
Congratulations to Alex Rivera, East Area Adult’s Student of the
Month for March. Having grown up in New York, Alex struggled
with learning disabilities and passing the New York Regents exams.
Once in Florida, he had the same problem before enrolling at East Area
Adult School. He entered the school as an ABE student and worked his
way up to the GED level. Since entering the GED class, he has passed
three of his four GED tests, and will be completing his last test in the
next few weeks. Getting his diploma was a dream he almost gave up
on! Now, Alex plans to become both a barber and a chef.
Alex’s GED teacher, Ms. Hagerty, proudly says, “Alex’s attitude
has always been positive. He is respectful, kind and well-liked by his
peers. I have enjoyed him immensely as a teacher and look forward to
him becoming a success in his chosen fields of study.”
After earning his GED, Alex plans to attend Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. His goal is to one day open his own fine dining
restaurant. With diligence and perseverance, Alex will make this
dream a reality.
East Area Adult would like to welcome our newest staff
member, Mrs. Kari Seeley. Mrs. Seeley is the new
teacher for the ABE/GED class at Bethune Neighborhood Center in Haines City. The daughter of missionaries, Kari and her three brothers grew up in Tanzania.
She attended Southeastern University in Lakeland, earning her Bachelor’s degree in ESOL and her Master’s degree in Human Services. Kari and her husband Brian also
began a ministry to help employ the homeless. Welcome
Kari! It is a pleasure to have you on the East Area Adult
School team!

their English skills? Having the GED or improving English skills will make a difference in their job search and in their ability to move forward in their current job.
Please refer adults to East Area Adult School in Polk County. We offer classes facilitated by certified teachers on both campuses and in many communities throughout
the county. We also offer the program online for those students who qualify.
