Dear Parents,
In January 2016 we launched the Digital Learning Programme (DLP) at Soto, an exciting new learning opportunity for
Secondary pupils. Since January, all pupils from Years 7 to 9 have been taking part in the King’s Group one-to-one
learning initiative, receiving Chromebooks for their exclusive use at school and at home. As a result we have been
able to engage students in retrieving, manipulating, interpreting and applying information and data available through
a wide variety of media. The DLP has helped us to enhance our learning environment by further enriching critical
thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity.
In September 2016 we aim to complete the implementation programme, introducing Chromebooks to the following
groups of pupils:
 All pupils new to Year 7 (ie. the current Year 6 and newcomers to Soto)
 All pupils new to Years 8, 9 and 10 who do not already possess a Chromebook (pupils arriving from KCS La
Moraleja will already be in possession of Chromebooks)
 All new pupils entering Year 11 (ie. the current Year 10 and newcomers to Soto)
Note: Years 12 and 13 (in September 2016) will not be required to have their own Chromebooks. They will be
welcome to bring in existing laptops if they wish. We also have a number of school Chromebooks which may
be borrowed if the need arises.
For information, a Chromebook is a small, lightweight, personal computer running Chrome OS as its operating
system. The devices are designed to be used while connected to the internet and support applications that reside in
the cloud, rather than traditional applications that reside on the machine itself, allowing pupils to access their files
from anywhere at anytime. Their purchase will be subsidised by the school by over 50% so the cost to parents will be
kept to the minimum (€150 per machine).
By providing every pupil with a personal learning device, we will be ensuring that all pupils have equal access to
technology and the opportunity to:
• access current digital curriculum and resources;
• analyze data and draw conclusions;
• develop digital creations expressing their ideas, knowledge, and points of view;
• use digital tools for organization;
• communicate and collaborate with teachers and peers beyond the walls of the classroom;
• and do much more — the potential is as limitless as the imaginations of King’s College pupils and teachers.
We expect that you will have a number of questions about this project. We hope that the Parent Digital Learning
Handbook (follow this link) and FAQ section will answer many of your queries. You can also visit our Chromebook

We still value highly the traditional values of scholarship, attention to detail, book learning and handwriting, all of
which we will continue to foster. We also have a duty to educate our children about digital technology and to give
them the chance to harness its power to enrich their own learning. Such technology is another valuable tool to sit
alongside existing equipment and books, and as such it enhances our tried and tested methods but does not replace
them.

En enero de 2016, King’s College lanzó un nuevo e interesante programa de aprendizaje digital para los alumnos de
secundaria. Todos los alumnos de Year 7 a Year 9 ya son parte de la iniciativa y disponen de un Chromebook exclusivo
y personal para su uso tanto en el colegio como en casa. Esto nos capacita para involucrar a nuestros alumnos en la
creación, manipulación, interpretación y aplicación de la información ayudándonos a mejorar nuestro ambiente de
aprendizaje consiguiendo mejorar su pensamiento crítico, colaboración, comunicación y creatividad.
En septiembre de 2016 completamos el resto de la implementación, presentando los Chromebook a los siguientes
grupos de alumnos:



Todos los alumnos nuevos del Year 7 (p.ej.: el Year 6 actual y los nuevos que vengan a Soto)
Todos los alumnos de los Year 8, 9 y 10 que todavía no tengan Chromebook (los alumnos que vengan de KCS
La Moraleja, ya los tienen)
Todos los nuevos alumnos que comiencen el Year 11 (p.ej. alumnos actuales del Year 10 y nuevos alumnos).
Nota: Los alumnos de los Year 12 y 13 (de Septiembre 2016) no necesitan tener su propio Chromebook.
Podrán traer sus portátiles si quieren. También disponemos en el Colegio de algunos Chromebooks para
préstamo, llegado el caso.
Para su información, el Chromebook es un pequeño y ligero ordenador que utiliza el sistema operativo Chrome OS. El
dispositivo está diseñado para ser usado conectado a internet y permite el uso de aplicaciones que se ejecutan en la
nube, a diferencia de programas tradicionales que se ejecutan directamente desde el ordenador. Esto permite a los
alumnos acceder a sus ficheros desde cualquier sitio y en cualquier momento. La compra del equipo está
subvencionada por el colegio en más de un 50% y el coste para los padres será mínimo: (€150 por equipo)
Al proporcionar a cada alumno un dispositivo de aprendizaje personal, estamos garantizando que todos los alumnos
tengan igualdad de acceso a la tecnología y la dándoles la oportunidad de:






acceder a un plan de estudios y a recursos digitales
analizar datos y sacar conclusiones
desarrollar creaciones digitales ayudando a expresar sus ideas, conocimientos y puntos de vista
utilizar las herramientas digitales para su organización personal
comunicar y colaborar con los profesores y alumnos más allá de las paredes del aula
hacer mucho más - el potencial es tan ilimitado como la imaginación de alumnos y profesores de King’s College
Suponemos que le surgirán una serie de preguntas acerca de este proyecto. Esperamos que en el Manual de
Aprendizaje Digital para Padres (siga este enlace) y en la sección de preguntas frecuentes puedan encontrar respuesta
a muchas de estas dudas. También puede encontrar más información en el portal que hemos creado con información

Seguimos dando enorme importancia a los valores tradicionales de la enseñanza y seguiremos fomentando la atención
al detalle, el aprendizaje usando libros y la escritura. También tenemos la obligación de educar a nuestros hijo/as sobre
la tecnología digital y poder darles la oportunidad de aprovechar su poder para enriquecer su propio aprendizaje. La
tecnología es una herramienta valiosa que junto a los equipos y los libros mejorará nuestros métodos ya probados, pero
sin reemplazarlos.
