Contracting on the Mighty Mo Over the past five years, the shores of the Missouri River sustained extensive damage from rapid snow melt and recordbreaking rainfall. The damage to the Mighty Mo stretches from St. Louis, MO to Helena, MT. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages the river and is tasked to keep this big and beautiful river as healthy as possible. Rip rap as it is loaded on the barge. As you might expect, repairing the Mighty Mo requires unique contracting methods. L.G. Everist, Inc. is currently supplying quartzite rip rap to a project on Fawn Island, located upstream from the mouth of the Little Sioux River at River Mile 674. This project is part of the Missouri River Recovery Program and consists of approximately 19,000 tons of 750 pound (top size) rip rap. The quartzite rip rap, produced in Dell Rapids, SD, is railed to Sioux City, IA, and then truck hauled to the project where it is loaded on barges and tugged to specific locations for placement. A track-type excavator then places the rip rap from the barge to the damaged shoreline. The contractor is utilizing two barges to keep the material flowing smoothly. The Fawn Island work is one of many projects currently underway by the Missouri River Recovery Program. We would like to commend the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and all of the on-site contractors for their Rock Solid efforts to repair and preserve the shores of the Mighty Mo.
