Spanish Spelling Bee Rules Spanish Day-MWSU All the words used in the contest are included in the Real Academia’s dictionary. I.- Rules of the contest: a. Each contestant may ask the pronouncer to repeat each word once, to give its definition or to use it in a sentence. b. Each contestant may write the word in a blackboard if he or she wants it. This would be done with the only purpose to allow the contestant to see the word before spelling it orally. The spectators and officials will not be allowed to see the word. c. Having started to spell a word, the spellers may stop and start over, retracing the spelling from the beginning, but in retracing they cannot change the letters or their sequence from those first pronounced. If letters or their sequence is changed in the respelling, the speller will be eliminated. d. The spelling must include accents and diereses. The contestants don’t have to pronounce the word before or after spelling it. e. Questions or objections about a particular spelling must be communicated to the officials, whose decisions are final. No complaint will be accepted once the next speller has received the word she or he has to spell. f. When spelling, the contestants must use the letter names that the Real Academia Española prefers: i. b: “b larga” ii. v: “v corta,” “uve” iii. r: “erre” iv. rr: “ erre, erre”. v. ll: “ele, ele” vi. y: “ye”, “i griega” vii. ch: “ce, hache” viii. ñ: “eñe” ix. q: “cu” II.- Once only two contestants remain in the competition, this is the elimination process: a. If speller A misspells a word, speller B shall be given an opportunity to spell that same word. If speller B spells that word correctly, and spells the next word on her/his list, then speller B shall be declared the champion. b. If speller A mispells a word, and speller B spells that word correctly, but then mispells the next word in his/her list, speller A will be given the word that speller B spelled incorrectly. If speller A spells correctly this word, she or he will be declared the champion. c. If both spellers misspell the same word, both of them will continue in the contest and the one who misspelled that word first will receive a new word. The contest will continue following points a and b in this section.
