A necessary colloquium
Despite the popularity of the author in Spain, where he has been a newspaper
columnist for various newspapers and literary supplements for two decades, and
despite the fact that his short stories are an obligatory reference for Latin American
literature students, this colloquium comes along to fill a gap. Despite the fact that
Iwasaki has written some excellent articles, a colloquium or congress where
reviewers and specialists discuss about the main features and the merits of his literary
production has not been organized until this date.
Almost thirty years after the publication of his first storybook (which was followed
by many others such as Un milagro informal (2003), Ajuar funerario (2004) or the
already mentioned Helarte de amar-, this colloquium of the ULB brings the main
studies of his texts together in order to consider his oeuvre in company of the author
himself. For years Fernando Iwasaki has been adding works to his oeuvre and to this
day his work serves as valuable and considerable material. Not many contemporary
authors master narrative skills as good as Iwasaki does, neither are they as humorous
in its broadest and most rewarding sense.
Other activities of the author in Belgium
Making use of the arrival of the author and essayist and thanks to the support of the
Department of Education of Spain in Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg
and the FNRS (Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique), Fernando Iwasaki will
actively participate in two other activities before and after his colloquium: on the one
hand a seminar for investigators about the importance of humor in contemporary
writing, also organized in the ULB on Monday 15 February in the morning and on
the other hand a meeting with students of Ghent University, which will take place at
the Faculty of Arts on Wednesday 17 February from 11.30 A.M. until 1 P.M.
FERNANDO IWASAKI: EXCELLENT STORYTELLER AND GENEROUS
INTELLECTUAL
Born in Peru (1961) but living in Sevilla since 1989, he’s the author of a multifaceted
and diverse oeuvre for which he received recognition from critics and readers. He’s
an excellent storyteller and he is able to make the ones that approach his work laugh
as well as give them goose bumps with amazing ease by combining well-read
intertextual references with other, more popular and irreverent references.
Furthermore, this Peruvian writer is a great reader and essayist who’s an intellectual
and generous master among his peers. This mastership, embodied in the numerous
articles and columns published in various peninsular and Spanish American

newspapers and literary supplements, in addition to his experience in cultural
management in various Spanish establishments, has facilitated the fact that his name
is in the public eye.
