hen Nilka Martell was laid off from her job in late 2010, she knew her life would take a new direction. She didn’t know it would involve trees, SODQWVDQGPXOFK

This year, GIVE received a $1,000 cash grant from Citizens Committee for New York &LW\

uando Nilka Martell fue despedida GHVXHPSOHRD¿QHVGHOHOOD
sabía que su vida habría de tomar una nueva dirección. Ella no sabía que esto involucraría arboles, plantas y pajote/
montillo.
Martell es fundadora de GIVE, (Getting Involved Virginia Avenue Efforts-­Involucrando Esfuerzos Virginia Avenue), una organización de vecindario dedicada a embellecer la manzana de Parchester donde ella reside. Este año, GIVE recibió de Citizens Committe de New York City, un subsidio en efectivo de $1,000. El subsidio, combinado con servicios de la ciudad y la participación de amistades y vecinos, transformó una otrora desvencijada manzana, HQXQDH[XEHUDQWHVHQGDUHSOHWDGHÀRUHFLHQWHV

“Realmente, usted no puede educarse sobre la naturaleza urbana en ninguna parte del Bronx”, dijo Martell, “especialmente sobre la importancia de los árboles”.

Rudy De La Haya ha residido en la manzana durante más de tres décadas y ha visto muchas transiciones. “ Este vecindario ha tenido sus altas y bajas”, expresó él.
“Creo que esto está muy bien”, dijo él. “Es un testamento al hecho de que el vecindario está creciendo. Es interesante ver a la gente invirtiendo en mantener el vecindario hermoso y seguro”.
