How to Control Ants at Home
Ants are troublesome insects because they easily adapt to different environments and foods. To control ants,
first you must follow some tips that help avoid ant infestations. Then, find the nests and apply an insecticide or
use an insecticide bait. You must also find and treat nests outside the house.
Control without insecticides
• Keep plants and grass away from the house
foundation to reduce the number of ant nests.
• Store food in a sealed container. Do not leave
out food overnight.
• Fill any cracks in the foundation. Seal with
caulking around doors and windows where ants
might enter.
• Trim trees and shrubs so they do not touch the
building.
• Repair any dripping pipes or water faucets.
To find the nest . . .
Place a bottle cap with peanut butter or jelly to attract the ants. Then look for worker ant trails because they
will lead you to the nest.
If you cannot find the nest . . .
Prepare a homemade bait with boric acid or use an insecticide bait (available in supermarkets and hardware
stores).
Directions to mix bait
Choose an attractive food for the ants (jelly or peanut butter).
Mix 1 teaspoon of boric acid to 1 cup of food. Do not add too much boric acid because this reduces its effectiveness.
Place the bait where you have seen ants, watch and follow ants to their nest.
Keep the bait fresh and moist.
*Boric acid can be poisonous to children and pets. Apply in small portions.
Once you have found the nest, treat it with an approved insecticide or spray, or use bait stations found in a
grocery or hardware store. When using insecticides, always read and follow the instructions on the label.

Cómo controlar hormigas en casa
Las hormigas son insectos molestos porque se adaptan fácilmente a diferentes ambientes y alimentos. Para
controlar las hormigas, primero hay que seguir unas sugerencias para evitar infestaciones. Entonces, hay que
encontrar el nido y aplicarle un insecticida o usar un cebo de insecticida. También hay que encontrar y tratar
los hormigueros fuera de la casa.
Control sin insecticidas
• Mantenga las plantas y el zacate alejado del
cimiento de la casa para reducir el número de
hormigueros cerca de la casa.
• Rellene grietas en el cimiento. Selle con
recalcadura alrededor de puertas y ventanas
para evitar que entren hormigas.
• Guarde comida en un recipiente hermético. No
deje comida fuera por la noche.
• Pode árboles y arbustos para que no toquen
el edificio.
• Repare cualquier tubería o llaves de agua que
goteen.
Para encontrar el nido . . .
Ponga una tapa de botella con crema de cacahuate o jalea para atraer las hormigas. Busque las veredas que
hacen las hormigas obreras, porque éstas lo conducen al nido.
Si no puede encontrar el nido . . .
Prepare un cebo casero de ácido bórico o utilice un cebo comercial (disponible en supermercados y
ferreterías).
Direcciones para mezclar el cebo
Escoja un alimento atractivo para las hormigas (jalea o crema de cacahuate).
Mezcle 1 cucharadita de ácido bórico por 1 taza de alimento. No agregue demasiado ácido bórico porque reduce su eficacia
Coloque el cebo donde haya visto hormigas, vea a donde van las hormigas y sígalas hasta su nido.
Mantenga el cebo fresco y húmedo.
*El ácido bórico puede ser venenoso para niños y animales domésticos. Aplique en cantidades pequeñas.
Una vez que encuentre el nido, aplíquele un insecticida aprobado de polvo o rocío, o use trampas de cebo
que se venden en supermercados o ferreterías. Cuando use insecticidas, siempre lea y siga las
indicaciones en la etiqueta.
