Welcome from the President of the British Association
of Oral Surgeons, Mr Keith Smith
Welcome to the 2013 Annual Scientific Conference of the British
Association of Oral Surgeons and to the historic City of Cardiff, the first
time the conference has been held in Wales. We hope you will find the
conference both useful and enjoyable. The conference organisers, Mike
Murphy, Keith Smart, Richard Evans, Gavin Nixon and Nick Moran have
put together an excellent and varied programme, which includes lectures
from renowned national and international speakers. With topics as
varied as combat trauma and trigeminal nerve disorders there should be
something of interest for everyone. The programme also includes two
parallel sessions of excellent Open papers and a poster presentation session which
demonstrate not only the strength and depth of our Association but also the enthusiasm of
our membership. Hopefully the conference will also provide space and time to relax and
review your current knowledge, meet old friends and to look to future developments. We
thank you for coming and your continued support of the Association.

The Role of Cone Beam CT in Oral Surgery.
By Mr Nicholas Drage
Nicholas Drage is Consultant in Dental and Maxillofacial
Radiology at the University Dental Hospital, Cardiff. He
is actively involved in both undergraduate and
postgraduate education in Wales. His main interests
are cone beam computed tomography, salivary gland
imaging and interventional sialography, and has
published several articles in these fields. He is co author
of ‘Essentials of Dental Radiography and Radiology’ and
‘Radiography and Radiology for Dental Care
Professionals’. He is President-elect of the British
Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology.

BRONJ: An American Perspective By Dr M. Anthony Pogrel
Dr M. Anthony Pogrel is an oral and maxillofacial
surgeon, specialising in head and neck pathologies,
temporomandibular joint surgery, orthognathic surgery
and the use of lasers in surgery. In addition to treating
patients at UCSF Medical Centre, he conducts research
on new treatments for oral and maxillofacial conditions
including problems with facial nerves and salivary gland
tumours. Dr Pogrel has published more than 250
articles in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks and is a
diplomat of the American Board of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery.

Member; Oral Diseases, and Medicina Oral Editor;
Journal of Investigative and Clinical Dentistry Associate
Editor. He has 950 MEDLINE papers, 400 research
papers, 200 reviews, 150 chapters, 50 clinical papers,
34 authored and 11 edited books. He has been awarded
the Colgate-Palmolive Prize of International Association
for Dental Research, UCL Fellowship, University
Doctorates (Athens, Granada, Helsinki Pretoria),
Medals (Helsinki, Granada, Santiago de Compostela),
Awards (Spanish, and Greek Oral Medicine Societies),
UK Award for Most Outstanding Achievements in
Dentistry and was awarded the Commander of the
Order of the British Empire for his service to dental
patient care.

Professor Tara Renton, Specialist in Oral Surgery, is a
Dentist with a particular interest in trigeminal nerve
injuries and pain. Tara leads the teaching of dental
students for each year 3, 4 and 5 at Kings College
London. Tara is the National advisor for Oral Surgery, as
well as a council member for BAOS she is an elected
member of the RCS England Dental Faculty Committee.

Liverpool University Dental Hospital. She has always

Education Academy, an honorary clinical lecturer and
Associate Postgraduate Dental Dean. Her major

9:00-10:00 The history of battlefield maxillofacial injuries
from the American Civil War to Afghanistan
By Wg Cdr Andrew Gibbons
Wing Commander Andrew Gibbons passed his
intercollegiate exit FRCS examination in Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery in May 2003 and was appointed
as consultant in Peterborough in 2004. His fields of
interest include facial truamatology, orthognathic
surgery, oral surgery, oral medicine and facial pain. He
has a commitment to research and audit with over 70
peer reviewed publications and written 4 chapters for
books. He regularly lectures at regional, national and
international meetings on subjects form ‘Aviation
Dentistry’ to ‘The Management of Ballistic Facial
Injuries’. As a consultant he is audit and governance
lead for his department, adviser to the Peterborough
coroner on forensic odontology, a referee for the British
Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has
examined for MFDS for the Royal College of Surgeons
of Edinburgh. In 2006 he was awarded The Lady Cade
Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of England
for his academic work and contributions to military
surgery. He served in Gulf War 1 and in Afghanistan on
operation Herrick in 2006 and 2008. He was appointed
as a surgical advisor at the Royal College of Surgeons
and an honorary fellow of St John’s College Cambridge
in 2012.

in a theatre of operations
By Col Glynn Evans
In civilian life, Col Evans trained in both Emergency
Medicine and Anaesthesia before being appointed as a
Consultant Anaesthetist in 1998. Since 1999 he has
worked as a Consultant at Walsgrave Hospital in
Coventry and its successor Trusts. He has thrice been
awarded the Pask Certificate of Honour by the
Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland
& received the Order of St John in 2005. He is a
Freeman of the City of London, a Liveryman of the
Worshipful Society of Apothecaries and holds
Fellowships of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, Royal
Geographical Society, the Institute of Leadership and
Management and the Chartered Management Institute
as well as being a founder member of the Faculty of
Pre-Hospital Care of the Royal College of Surgeons of
Edinburgh

By Sat Parmer
Mr. Sat Parmar graduated from the University of Leeds,
School of Dentistry in 1986 where he was awarded
prizes in Oral surgery, Children's Dentistry and
Prosthetics. He started Medical School at the University
of Nottingham in 1990 where he was awarded a
BMedSci in 1993. He graduated in Medicine in 1995
winning the Gold Medal for the best Medical student of
the year and the Marsden Prize for outstanding
contribution to the University of Nottingham. Mr Parmar
was appointed as an Oral and Maxillofacial /Head and
Neck /Reconstructive Surgeon at the University Hospital
of Birmingham in 2003. He is actively involved in
teaching. He is a course instructor for Advanced Trauma
and Life Support (ATLS), Trauma skills, Dentist on the
Ward courses. He also lectures on the European Head
and Neck course and the Microvascular courses in
Toronto and Florida. He is the chair of AOUK
(Craniofacial) and has lectured nationally and
internationally. He carries out most aspects of general
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery but his sub-specialist
interest is Salivary Gland/Head and Neck Cancer and
Reconstruction.

13:30-14:15 Best practice and standards in the provision
of Conscious Sedation
By Shelagh Thompson
Shelagh is Reader in Sedation and Special Care
Dentistry, and Programme Director for MSc in
Conscious Sedation at Cardiff University and an
Honorary Consultant in Special Care Dentistry for the
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. Dr Thompson
has been the editor of the Journal of Disability and Oral
Health since 2011. Her clinical interests are in all
aspects of Special Care Dentistry using behavioural
management including hypnosis, LA, conscious
sedation, alternative sedation techniques and general
anaesthesia.

Setting up a Conscious Sedation Service in Primary Care
By Mick Allen
Mick graduated from University College London in 1988
having developed an interest in Sedation with guidance
from Jane Stewart. He had a Practice in Cardiff for 14
years providing IV sedation but in 2007 set up a new
practice in Abergavenny and established Gateway
Conscious Sedation Service. He has been a lecturer in
Sedation and Special Care Dentistry at Cardiff
University School of Dentistry for 12 years and is also a
‘Specialty Doctor’ at Mountain Ash outreach centre.
Mick was awarded a Sedation based MSc from Cardiff
University in 2009. He is also Dental Postgraduate Tutor
for Newport, SE Wales and also Treasurer and
Membership Secretary of the Dental Sedation Teachers
Group. In his spare time he enjoys triathlons, completing
Ironman UK in 2009, fly-fishing and looking after 8
beehives! He has three late teen children who mock him
mercilessly.

Dr Sheila Oliver is a Senior Clinical Lecturer/Hon
Associate Specialist at the Cardiff School of Dentistry.
Her career has progressed from a specialist practise in
Oral Surgery and Special Care dentistry to the provision
of internationally esteemed dental education. She
supports students beginning their dental course through
to graduation and into postgraduate life. She is active in
raising the profile of educational excellence both
nationally and internationally. Within her clinical
specialities she has contributed to development of
national guidelines and been invited to lead staff
development by universities in Paris, Barcelona and
Riga. Sheila also leads a special interest group for the
Association of Dental Education in Europe.

By Prof Tony Pogrel
Professor Pogrel earned a dental degree at Liverpool
University in England and a medical degree at
Aberdeen University in Scotland. He completed general
surgery training in Great Britain and oral and
maxillofacial surgery training in Great Britain, Holland
and Miami, Fla. Tony joined the University of California,
San Francisco in 1983, and he became a professor and
chair of that department in 1994 with a joint
appointment in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He
is licensed in dentistry and medicine in California and is
a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh
and the American College of Surgeons, and is certified
by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery. He is a fellow of the AAOMS, the American
College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons
of Edinburgh.

Neurosurgical Management of Trigeminal Neuralgia
By Brian Simpson
Brian A Simpson is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the
University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where he has
developed an active practice in functional neurosurgery,
particularly the surgical treatment of pain, including
neurostimulation. His research into the role of dopamine
systems in sensorimotor integration led to an MD
degree from Cambridge University. He has lectured and
published widely on the subject and has contributed to
the development of the International Neuromodulation
Society, serving as President from 2000 to 2003. He
was educated at Trinity Hall Cambridge and the London
Hospital Medical College, qualifying in 1973 and
becoming FRCS in 1978.

Trigeminal Neuralgia Diagnosis and early medical management
By Dr Phil Atkin
Philip Atkin is a Consultant and honorary senior lecturer
in oral medicine in Cardiff dental hospital and school
following appointment in 2004. Oral medicine specialist
training at Barts & The London with an emphasis on
Orofacial pain. His background is in oral surgery,
including lecturer in oral surgery (p/t) at Barts and The
London and entry to the GDC specialist list in 1999.
Also he has a long experience in aspects of special
care dentistry, emergency dental clinics and medically
compromised patients. Patients with chronic Orofacial
pain are seen in the general oral medicine clinics.
Patients with trigeminal neuralgia are managed
alongside dental and medical colleagues in primary
care, and over the years a close collaboration has
developed with colleagues in anaesthetics/pain
medicine and neurosurgery within the Cardiff and Vale
University Health Board for those patients requiring
additional expertise and input. The oral medicine clinics
in Cardiff accept tertiary referrals for Orofacial pain,
including TN, from across Wales. Philip is pleased to be
a long standing member of BASD/BAOS since its
earliest years.

Dr Michael Drage is a Consultant in Anaesthesia at
University Hospital of Wales and Spire Cardiff Hospital.
Michael is a Fellow of the Royal College of
Anaesthetists. He made an appearance on 24/7 dealing
with a patient with chronic pain. Hospital 24/7 was
filmed over 7 days at Wales's largest hospital,
following the real life medical dramas at the University
Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

vocalist-pianist, Mr Rhys Hoddinott playing a
collection of old and new songs as well as some of
his own original music.
The Pinot Restaurant on the first floor is where
Dom Blonde a guitar & singing duo will be playing.
A hot buffet will be served on both floors.
The evening will be finished off with a
Karaoke/Disco in the lower ground floor Vanilla
Room cocktail bar or you can just enjoy a quiet
drink in the Yalumba Room bar on the main floor.

The BAOS Annual dinner in the National Museum of Wales
The National museum is located in Cathays Park
but we will be entering via the Park Place
entrance.
There will be a drinks reception in the Museums
galleries on the second floor where you can
wander round the galleries and you will also be
entertained by the Ynysowen Male Voice Choir.
After the drinks reception in the Galleries, the
BAOS Annual dinner will be held in the Museums
Grand Hall. After dinner the BAOS president will
present the prizes to the winners and runners up
of the BAOS Oral Surgery Audit, the Poster Prize
and finally the Open Paper Prize. There will be an
Open bar available and Richard Evans is
organising tickets at nearby clubs for those who
want to go off late night dancing!
