Pioneers Who Struck Gold
The Paralympics are coming home. On the day the 1948 Olympics opened at Wembley stadium
the first competition for disabled athletes was held at Stoke Manderville hospital in
Buckinghamshire, which was a world-renowned centre for the treatment of people with spinal
injuries.
Only 16 competitors took part in an archery event, including two women. 64 years later, 4,200
athletes from 165 nations will join a festival appreciated across the world, nowhere more so than in
Britain.
It was a German, Dr Ludwig Guttman, who had the foresight to stimulate the birth of the
Paralympic movement, promoting an event that was the equivalent of the Olympics but restricted
to the disabled to allow themselves to fulfil themselves. He had encouraged his patients who had
had suffered spinal cord injuries to participate in sport for exercise and self-esteem. The event
became annual and when the 1952 Games were attended by Dutch competitors, although
restricted to those wounded in the war, it was the first international competition of its kind.
A breakthrough came in 1960 when Olympic officials who had admired Guttman’s work gave their
endorsement to the staging of the Paralympics in Rome, the scene that summer of the Olympics.
Those games were not just for war veterans, though events were still only for wheelchair athletes.
More than 400 competitors from 23 countries took part. The Paralympic Games had been born.
As Sebastian Coe said, ‘We want to change public opinion towards disability, celebrate the
excellence of Paralympic sport and to enshrine from the very outset that the two games are an
integrated whole.’
