GABINETE DE PRENSA MINISTERIO DE SANIDAD, SERVICIOS SOCIALES E IGUALDAD Press Release ONT presents 2015 data on donation and transplantation activities Spain records the highest increase in the number of organ donors in the history of ONT, which has allowed to reach 39.7 donors p.m.p and to perform 4,769 transplants Organ donors increase by 10% and rise to a number of 1,851. Our country, world leader over the last 24 years, is ahead from the rest of the world and gets close to 40 donors p.m.p ONT records a historical increase in all transplants (+9.4%), with a maximum in kidney (2,905), liver (1,162) and lung (294) transplant activities The generosity of citizens and the implication of all professionals of the transplant network have made possible to perform 13 transplants a day, more than 1 transplant every 2 hours Donation after circulatory death (+ 63%) and the cooperation of emergency care physicians with intensivists and donor coordinators to ensure the identification of potential donors are the keys for this new record For the very first time, all Autonomous Regions reach activities over 30 donors p.m.p. Moreover, 4 are over 50 donors p.m.p and 10 over 40 donors p.m.p The ranking of Autonomous Regions is headed by La Rioja (78.9 p.m.p), followed by Cantabria (73.5), Navarre (54.6), Basque Country (53.0), Extremadura (45.7) and Murcia (44.3) CORREO ELECTRÓNICO [email protected] Página 1 de 7 Esta información puede ser usada en parte o en su integridad sin necesidad de citar fuentes www.msssi.es MINISTERIO DE SANIDAD, SOCIALES E IGUALDAD 28071 - MADRID TEL: 91 596 11 22 FAX: 91 596 15 86 SERVICIOS 12 January 2016.- Spain, world leader in donation and transplantation over the last 24 years, beats its own record once again and registers the highest increase in the number of donors in the history of ONT. This has allowed reaching 39.7 donors per million population and a total of 4,769 patients transplanted in 2015. According to ONT´s data, the number of donors is of 1,851, with a 10% increase, a new maximum in activity. Our country is even more ahead from the rest of the world in terms of organ donation rates by getting close to 40 donors per million population. Spain is more than 20 points over the EU (19.6 donors p.m.p) and more than 13 over the United States (26.6 p.m.p). Transplantation also increases by 9.4% compared with the previous year. The generosity of citizens and the implication of all professionals of the coordination and transplantation network have allowed Spain to perform 13 transplants a day during 2015, which means more than 1 transplant every two hours. This has been assured by the acting minister of Health, Social Services and Equality, Alfonso Alonso, during a press conference to present ONT´s 2015 activity. Alonso, accompanied by the general secretary of Health, Javier Castrodeza and ONT´s director, Rafael Matesanz, has highlighted “the great strength of the Spanish transplantation system, which has shown again its great capacity to improve in the patients´ benefit”. “This ability to improve explains the Spanish world leadership in this field, maintained in an uninterrupted manner during 24 years. A leadership which we support and wish to maintain during many more years”, added the minister. 2015 STRATEGY For Alonso, innovation and search for excellence in the benefit of patients are signs of the identity of ONT. ONT has put in place a series of measures – included under the 2015 Strategy - with the aim of increasing in a five year period the number of donors by 10% and the number of transplants by 20%, to reach the number of 5,000 patients transplanted by 2020. “Should this rhythm be maintained, I am sure our country will reach the 5,000 transplants much earlier than expected”. Among the innovative measures developed by ONT, “the promotion of donation after circulatory death and the cooperation of the hospital as a whole, EMAIL ADDRESS [email protected] Page 2 of 7 This information can be used totally or in part with no need of citing sources www.msssi.es MINISTERIO DE SANIDAD, SOCIALES E IGUALDAD 28071 - MADRID TEL: 91 596 11 22 FAX: 91 596 15 86 SERVICIOS especially emergency care physicians, in the identification of possible donors” need to be highlighted, Alonso has underlined. SOCIAL COHESION After reiterating the Government compromise with the Spanish transplantation system, the minister has reminded the role of donation and transplantation as a factor of social cohesion in the country. According to ONT´s data, one out of every four-five organs (22,6%) is transplanted in a Region different from the one where donation took place, with parallel flows of patients to gain access to transplants that are not performed at their our region. “No Autonomous Region would be able to reach the current results without cooperating with other Regions and the National Health System as a whole” Alonso has underlined. Alonso has thanked the solidarity of the Spanish society and the implication of all professionals who participate of the process of donation and transplantation. “We all should feel proud of these achievements which make possible that our citizens have the highest possibilities of receiving a transplant when they need it”, he has added. 2015 ACTIVITY ONT´s director, Rafael Matesanz, has further detailed the 2015 donation and transplantation activity. ONT´s 2015 data reach maximum historical levels in number of organ donors, with a total of 1,851, which entails a 10% increase compared with the previous year. The same applies to solid organ transplants (4,769), which increase by a mean of 9.4% in all types, with maximum historical levels in the case of kidney, liver and lung transplantation. In total, 2,905 kidney (+8.5%), 1,162 liver (+9%), 299 heart (13%), 294 lung (+12%), 97 pancreas (+20%) and 12 small bowel (+100%) transplants have been performed (see table below) Organ donation and transplantation in Spain Donors Kidney Tx Liver Tx Heart Tx Lung Tx 2013 2014 2015 1,655 2,552 1,093 249 285 1,682 2,678 1,068 265 262 1,851 2,905 1,162 299 294 EMAIL ADDRESS [email protected] Page 3 of 7 This information can be used totally or in part with no need of citing sources www.msssi.es MINISTERIO DE SANIDAD, SOCIALES E IGUALDAD 28071 - MADRID TEL: 91 596 11 22 FAX: 91 596 15 86 SERVICIOS Pancreas Tx Small Bowel Tx 92 8 81 6 97 12 Total organ Tx 4,279 4,360 4,769 DONATION AFTER CIRCULATORY DEATH AND EMERGENCY CARE Matesanz has also made reference to the innovations introduced by ONT to optimize organ donation, such as the promotion of donation after circulatory death, and a higher cooperation between the ICUs and the rest of hospital units, particularly the emergency department and all critical care units in general terms, along with the implementation of the ACCORD-Spain Plan. With the participation of 69 hospitals, this plan aims at facilitating the identification of possible donors outside of the ICUs. “The data make evident the effectiveness of the measures adopted”, he has assured. Donation after circulatory death consolidates as the most evident way of increasing the number of transplants, with a total of 314 donors, representing a 63% increase. This type of donation already represents 17% of the overall deceased donation activity. At present, a total of 51 Spanish hospitals have an active programme of donation after circulatory death. Matesanz has also underlined the implication of professionals from emergency care, one of the keys explaining this new achievement in the increase in the number of donors: “The cooperation of emergency care physicians and the Spanish Society of Emergency Care (SEMES) with intensivists and donor coordinators has been essential for this increase in the number of donors” ONT´s director has assured. To the contrary, live kidney donation has decreased (-8%) with a total of 388 transplants (compared with 423 in 2014 and 382 in 2013). Out of these, 37 have been performed in the framework of the kidney paired exchange programme. Live kidney transplants represent 13.3% of the overall kidney transplantation activity at present. With regards to the donor profile, it is important to underline that 65.2% of donors died as a result of a cerebrovascular accident. In parallel, the number of donors dead in the context of a traffic accident decreases, representing 4.2% of all donors, the lowest percentage ever recorded since the initiation of transplantation in Spain. Since the approval of the new Road Safety Act in 2005, donors dead because of a traffic accident have decreased by 70%. Similarly, the progressive aging of organ donors continues. For the fifth consecutive year, more than a half of organ donors are aged over 60 years. Concretely, 53.3% of organ donors are aged over 60, almost one third over 70 and 10% over 80 years. The number of patients on the waiting list remains stable over the years, with small variations (5,513 in 2012, 5,418 in 2013, 5,571 in 2014 and 5,552 in 2015). RECORD IN ORGAN DONORS IN ONE DAY The important activity registered by ONT during the last year reached a maximum last 14 December 2015, date when a new record in the number of donors in 24 hours was reached, with a total of 16 donors, 15 deceased and 1 living organ donor. These donors allowed performing 38 transplants in one single day. 29 hospitals, from 11 Autonomous Regions participated in the different procedures. 6 transplant teams needed to travel by air, which implied the participation of 12 airports. More than 600 persons cooperated. DATA PER AUTONOMOUS REGIONS Per Autonomous Regions, La Rioja leads the ranking again with a rate of 78.9 donors per million population. It is followed by Cantabria (73.5 donors p.m.p), Navarre (54.6 p.m.p), Basque Country (53.0 p.m.p), Extremadura (45.7 p.m.p) and Murcia (44.3 p.m.p). For the first time in ONT´s history, all regions reach rates over 30 donors p.m.p. Moreover, 4 are beyond 50 donors per million population and 10 over 40 p.m.p. In percentages, the Basque Country, la Rioja, Cantabria, Extremadura, Murcia and Canary Islands (in this order) are the Regions registering the highest increase in the number of donors. In absolute numbers, donors also importantly increase in the Basque Country, Catalonia, Valencia, Galicia, Canary Islands, Extremadura and Cantabria (in this order). Population (million inh.) Universitario de A Coruña DISINTERESTED COOPERATION OF AIRLINES COMPANIES The important activity developed by ONT during the last year has also resulted in an increase in the transportation of organs by air. The increase in the number of flights has depended on commercial airline companies, such as Iberia, Vueling or Air Europa. These airline companies have a long-lasting and disinterested cooperation with ONT for the transportation of organs in containers in their regular flights. In fact, of the 602 flights performed during the last year, 444 were carried out by private airline companies (aero-taxis), a similar figure to the previous year, and 158 were regular flights, which use has doubled compared with 2014 ( with 73 flights registered). These flights do not entail any cost to the Spanish transplantation system and are the ones selected by ONT when possible. Thanks to their cooperation, 172 organs were transported for transplantation purposes (161 for kidney transplantation and 11 for liver transplantation). In 2015, ONT also signed an agreement with Renfe for the disinterested transportation of organs by AVE. The first transportation took place between Seville and Madrid/ Madrid and Seville, for a kidney paired exchange procedure with the participation of the Doce de Octubre and Virgen del Rocío Hospitals. On the other hand, military bases were needed on 61 occasions, with authorization requested to the Air Chief of Staff. The opening of airports or the extension of their operating hours was required on 206 occasions. On behalf of transplanted patients, Dr. Matesanz has thanked all for their cooperation.
