The show: L’Alè dels Fils (Life in the strings)
Jordi Bertran, known internationally as one of the master marionette puppeteers,
presents a cast of characters from the world of cabaret, dance, rock and everyday
life.
Life in the strings is a fun show, which fills every corner of the stage with an unusual
virtuosity, the result of many years of work. On stage a set of puppets come to life
with every joint, control, pulley, counterweight and lever built to the perfection to
move the spectator.
Structured along the same lines as a cabaret, the vocals and music conduct a web
of stories woven by the strings of the characters: each story is a scene, each scene
an impulse, a desire, which gives life and movement to each puppet.
This is a highly visual show in which live music, movement, minor disputes and the
poetics of gesture are the strings that bind together this truly international show.
L’ALÈ DELS FILS (Life in the strings): a show for adults that fascinates even
the youngest spectator.
Production
Of the wide range of puppets around, marionettes are those that require most
technical skill because they are articulated puppets, operated by the handler from
above via strings hanging from a cross, which is used to direct the movements of
the figure.
The scene is played out directly before the audience, bathed with delicate lighting
effects; the action is accompanied by the voice and guitar of Jordi Bertran.
The pupeteering -by Litus (Carles Codina) and Jordi Bertran himself- is performed
in sight of the spectator: the relationship between the puppeteer and the object
brings about a studied, precise and technically perfect choreography.
The Life in the strings performance is the result of hours and hours of practice and
thirty years of experience, with every joint, gesture or counterweight studied to
perfection to ensure that the characters that parade before the spectator -Piaf,
Charlot, Clandestino ...- reach a level of poetic magic that would be difficult to match
on any other stage, with charming characters from the imagination of their creator,
and others, recognizable characters from public life.
Eight amazing puppets and two surprising small balls make up the eight scenes that
recreate the unique universe of Jordi Bertran in this his latest show, Life in the
strings.

Chaplin et Piaf émerveillent
Festival des arts de la marionnette (FIAM) à Saguenay qui avait invité la compagnie
Jordi Bertran afin de présenter Le sens des fils. Véritable cabaret où des marionnettes
prennent vie sous nos yeux, cette production aura grandement émerveillé le public.

(Jonquière) Le Café-Théâtre Côté-Cour accueillait nul autre que Charlie Chaplin et
Édith Piaf hier soir. Leur visite inattendue était une gracieuseté du Festival des arts de
la marionnette (FIAM) à Saguenay qui avait invité la compagnie Jordi Bertran afin de
présenter Le sens des fils. Véritable cabaret où des marionnettes prennent vie sous nos
yeux, cette production aura grandement émerveillé le public.
C'est en 1987 que Jordi Bertran fondait sa propre compagnie après une dizaine d'années
à fréquenter des marionnettistes de l'Espagne. Après un quart de siècle d'existence, la
troupe est maintenant reconnue comme l'une des plus douées du pays. Avec comme
objectif de diffuser l'art de la marionnette auprès du public adulte, Bertran offre donc
des numéros faisant appel aux repères culturels des moins jeunes. Le sens des fils
adhère complètement à cette philosophie et la réaction enthousiaste du public confirme
que Bertran et ses collaborateurs ont visé juste.
Dès l'ouverture du spectacle, le public a laissé entendre des exclamations de bonheur
en voyant la marionnette représentant Édith Piaf se présenter sur scène. En parfait
contrôle de son art, Bertrand a immédiatement créé l'illusion comme quoi Piaf interprétait
Non, je ne regrette rien. Imitant avec brio la posture et la gestuelle de la chanteuse au
destin tragique, Jordi Bertran avait déjà conquis le public en quelques secondes à peine.
C'est suite à ce numéro fascinant que Jordi Bertran a saisi sa guitare afin d'accompagner
son collègue marionnettiste, Carles Codina, qui allait donner vie au sympathique
Clandestino. Ce dernier s'est donc prêté à une chorégraphie burlesque avec comme
partenaire, une petite chaise rouge. Somme toute, un prétexte amusant afin de démontrer
toute la virtuosité de Codina.
Mais le moment du spectacle qui aura le plus charmé l'assistance aura été celui mettant
en vedette Charlot, le fameux personnage jadis incarné par Charlie Chaplin. Avec une
justesse stupéfiante, Carles Codina a reproduit dans ses moindres détails les mouvements
de cette figure incontournable du cinéma muet. Dans une mise en scène où celui-ci
s'endormait sur un banc public tandis qu'une charmante dame venait distribuer des
fleurs à Jordi Bertran ainsi qu'à une spectatrice, on pouvait entendre le public s'exclamer
avec tendresse. Ce tableau magique se sera terminé dans des éclats de fou rire alors
que Charlot se sera lancé dans un numéro de patins à roulettes.
Certes, Le sens des fils s'adresse d'abord à un public adulte, mais une chose est certaine,
c'est que l'instant d'un spectacle, les soucis de tout un chacun dans la salle laissent place
au bonheur qui s'abrite dans leurs coeurs d'enfant.
La dernière représentation se tiendra aujourd'hui à 14 h au Café-Théâtre Côté-Cour.

CON UN PAR DE PELOTAS

Con un par de pelotas, Jordi Bertrán creó magia. No se confundan; no es que a estas
alturas de festival, cuando el que más y el que menos alcanza cierto punto de
saturación, esté relajando la redacción de estas crónicas, con expresiones que se
deslizan hacia lo mal sonante; no. Es que las dos pelotitas que, a modo de cabeza,
el conocido titiritero catalán se calzó en dos de sus dedos, para alcanzar lo grande
desde lo más sencillo, fueron lo más destacado del espectáculo que cerró, en el
Torreón de Lozoya, esta vigésimo tercera edición de Titirimundi.
Hablaba el otro día de un espectáculo de esos que se consideran una pequeña joya,
poético, metafórico, estéticamente bello, pero al que le faltaba ese punto, esa chispa,
para ser un recuerdo indeleble de Titirimundi. Esas dos bolitas, y la forma de
manejarlas, tienen la chispa, el pellizco, que dicen los flamencos, ese alma que hace
que, de pronto, un espectáculo sea algo más, esté a otro nivel. Y la mayoría de las
veces no hacen falta grandes despliegues escenográficos, ni grandes alardes técnicos,
solo un arrebato de talento y una conexión con el que mira difícil de explicar sabiduría
técnica Además de los dos magníficos títeres pergeñados con dos manos y dos
pelotas, el espectáculo que presentó este año Jordi Bertrán, “El aliento de los hilos”,
tiene esa mezcla de música en directo y títeres que caracteriza su trabajo, y tiene
también unas dosis indudables de sabiduría técnica en el manejo de complejísimas
marionetas de hilos, manipulación en la que también destacó la joven Laura López.
En un espectáculo ágil, que cambia de tono con facilidad sin que nada rechine,
Bertrán pasó de pasajes más poéticos, como los protagonizados por Ofelia o las dos
damas de la naturaleza, a otros simpáticos, como los protagonizados por Clandestino,
el muñeco preocupado porque no tiene papeles; o el rockero que actúa en playback, ya que todo el resto de la banda ha sucumbido a los excesos de Titirimundi.

Ha llenado durante varios días el Torreón de Lozoya de espectadores que no
querían desaprovechar la oportunidad de ver su nuevo espectáculo, que ha
estrenado gira por festivales en este Titirimundi. Jordi Bertrán es uno de los
maestros del teatro de títeres nacional y uno de sus más célebres representantes
fuera de las fronteras españolas. Sus creaciones siempre tienen ese punto de
imaginación que las hace diferentes, además de una extraordinaria habilidad en
el manejo de las marionetas. Ambos elementos están presentes en 'El aliento
de los hilos' y ambos fueron de nuevo reconocidos generosamente por los
espectadores.
Bertrán se luce con los cuadros más sencillos. Sobre todo con la desventuras
de esas criaturas formadas sólo con los dedos desnudos y sendas bolas blancas
como cabezas que trastean por todo el recorrido de la guitarra, arrancando
notas con armonía.
Luego vienen los grandes títeres de hilos, muy elegantes, sofisticados en su
fábrica y exigentes en su manipulación, como Edith Piaf o el gran Charlot, al
que se le ocurre subirle a unos patines. Y el humor, con ese rockero a mandíbula
batiente que se llama Inox. Todos pendientes de decenas de hilos que parecen
condenados a reunirse en madeja.
Lo que me extrañó del espectáculo, bien medido y dispuesto para su disfrute,
fue la repentina irrupción de Bin Laden y su incorporación a la galería de
personajes. Me sorprendió aún más el número interpretado con esta marioneta
en escena, sobre todo cuando el muñeco exhibe un avión entre sus manos y
le hace dibujar trayectorias irregulares en el aire.
Personalmente no me hizo nada de gracia, aun entendiendo que la libertad de
expresión es sagrada. ¿Se hubiera reído el público como lo hizo si en vez de
juguetear con un avión lo hubiera hecho con un vagón de un tren de cercanías?
Bertrán advirtió previamente que el 'sketc'h podría herir a los más sensibles,
pero pensábamos que era otro guiño humorístico encajado en el guión.

Companyia Jordi Bertran: from its origins to the present.
In 1977 he founded his own company with the intention of spreading the art of
puppeteering with the objective of especially reaching an adult audience.
Later he formed part of two groups: "Col·lectiu d'Animació de Barcelona" (1978),
directed by Carles Cañellas, and "La Companyia Ambulant els Farsants" (1979-1987),
which he co-founded.
In 1987 he founded his own company with the intention of spreading the art of
puppeteering with the objective of especially reaching an adult audience.
Thanks to the efforts of numerous artists and collaborators, Companyia Jordi Bertran
is now one of the most prestigious in the country, with numerous national and
international awards recognizing his career.
He has participated in the most important performing arts festivals in the world,
touring in over fifty countries, and having worked on television.
On the teaching side, Jordi Bertran offers courses in the creation and handling of
puppets in School of theatre La Casona, and he gave and gives international
workshops in places as: Oaxaca, Reunion Island, Florianópolis, Sao Paulo, Bretagne,
Lisbon, Aragon, etc.
El Taller del Parc, is a centre in Barcelona, is the space of creation of Jordi Bertran
Company, where it is constructed, gives life and there are stored all the marionettes
and the spectacles of the company. Also it is a center that offers training workshops
in different areas of puppet theatre: construction, handling, but also lighting, costumes
and other applied techniques. With the collaboration of professionals related to the
Company, it provides both a space for creation and rehearsals for other puppet
companies.
The Companyia Jordi Bertran is currently made up by:
Carles Codina, Eduardo Telletxea, Inés Alarcón, Óscar Muñoz, Aurora Poveda,
Paulette San Martín, Miquel Nevado, Dalí Muñoz i Jordi Bertran.

SET-UP AND DISMANTLING
Set-up: 3 hours.
Dismantling: 45 minutes.
A room technician must be present as the Company uses the space and equipment
(set-up, dismantling) and play during the performance.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
• It is necessary that a person from the organization is present from the agreed
time of arrival of the Company until their departure from the premises.
• Direct access to the company vehicle from the stage or unloading area. If this
is not possible, the organization must supply the personnel for loading and
unloading.
• The technical requirements of the show can be adapted as long as the Company
has been informed previous to contracting the show.
• The Company has the minimum equipment for the performance’s sound and
lighting, which can be arranged when the show is contracted.
