THIS WEEK’S BULLETIN COVER The Magi This scene of the Magi adoring the Christ Child is depicted in the stained glass windows here at Saint Mary’s. Just as the Magi made the journey and encountered Christ together, may we journey towards Christ in communion with one another. Peace. OUR HISTORY SERIES The continuation of the history …… The article concerning “Holy Family” in Concord concluded our exploration to learn more concerning the parishes that were off shoots of the original St. Mary Parish in Waltham. The most important fact is that these new parishes were the result of the pastors bringing the Word of God to people not only in their town but also, in the cast of Father Strain starting in the 1840’s, to people in Newton Upper Falls (Mary Immaculate of Lourdes) and in Concord Center (St. Bernard). The influx of more French speaking parishioners saw the necessity of a French national parish (St. Joseph) in the late 1800’s and in the 1920’s; Sacred Heart parish was organized to serve the growing Italian population of the Bleachery section along River Street. The growing population of Waltham saw the dividing of Saint Mary into two parishes in the early years of the 20th century. The dividing line was the Charles River and the new parish was called St. Charles Borromeo. The pastor of St. Mary Parish, Father Brosnahan, brought the sacraments to Weston starting in 1917 and in 1921, the church was dedicated. On Trapelo Road, a parish was established with land donated by Father Baxter of St Mary in 1936. This parish was established to minister to the inhabitants of the three hospitals on Trapelo Road, but as Waltham became more densely populated, the farms in that area were replaced by homes and Our Lady, Comforter of the Afflicted became the parish of North Waltham. The last parish to be established was St. Jude on Main Street. This parish was comprised of parishioners from St. Mary, St. Patrick in Watertown and St. Luke the Evangelist in Belmont. The architecture of each new parish church was different. Mary Immaculate was rebuilt and resembles an antique Italian church with a side bell tower. St. Bernard, now Holy Family, has resided in a white antique building for over 150 years that had been the original Unitarian Church in Concord. St. Jude was built to resemble “Martha, Mary Chapel” in Sudbury. St. Charles is a true urban church with very little church yard. It also has a very unusual stained glass window of St. Charles Borromeo, the patron saint. The two National parishes also went through changes and St. Joseph Parish eventually built a modern church on Main Street. This is now the home of a Cambridge Evangelical church. Sacred Heart Church is a landmark in Waltham. The church is very unusual in its architecture, resembling a dome. Our Lady’s, on Trapelo Rd. is more traditional and the final parish, St. Julia, is fieldstone, resembling the façade of the Christ Episcopal Church on Main St. in Waltham. No matter how different the new physical churches were outside, the driving force behind the parishes was the same, the directive to bring the Gospel to all people. CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS Many thanks to all who helped prepare the Church for Christmas. Thanks to all who made donations for the trees and flowers. This year we bought some live trees that we hope to replant on the parish grounds later this year. Thank you also to the singer and choir at the Midnight Mass, the ministers, servers and those who helped clean and decorate the church for the Christmas Feast. may you be rewarded for your efforts. Late thank you for Christmas decoration donations: Terry Bennet & Family - In memory of Walter “Rusty” Bennett Marianne Merola - For family intentions and in memory of Anthony Merola NEWCOMERS/PARISH REGISTRATION We invite all newcomers as well as ‘old timers’ to register in the parish. Registration sheets can be picked up at the doors as well as going online. Our parish website address is stmarywaltham.org. If you are new, please introduce yourself to the priests so we can learn names. This helps in the building of communion. We encourage all parishioners to register and use weekly collection envelopes if it will benefit you. We also ask people to let us know if your address changes. This greatly helps with communication and stewardship. SCRIPTURE PASSAGE During 2009 we began including a Psalm each week to encourage the reading of Scripture. There are 150 Psalms and we are on number 72 this week. Take some time to hear the word of God by reading and meditating on this Psalm throughout the week: PSALM LXXII The Kingdom of the Messiah O God, with your judgment endow the king, and with your justice, the king’s son; He shall govern your people with justice and your afflicted ones with judgment. The mountains shall yield peace for the people, and the hills justice. he shall defend the afflicted among the people, save the children of the poor, and crush the oppressor. May he endure as long as the sun, and like the moon through all generations. he shall be like rain coming down on the meadow, like showers watering the earth. Justice shall flower in his days, and profound peace, till the moon be no more. May he rule from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. his foes shall bow before him, and his enemies shall lick the dust. The kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts; the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute. All kings shall pay him homage, all nations shall serve him. For he shall rescue the poor man when he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to help him. he shall have pity for the lowly and the poor; the lives of the poor he shall save. From fraud and violence he shall redeem them, and precious shall their blood be in his sight. May he live to be given the gold of Arabia, and to be prayed for continually; day by day shall they bless him. May there be an abundance of grain upon the earth; on the tops of the mountains the crops shall rustle like Lebanon; the city dwellers shall flourish like the verdure of the fields. May his name be blessed forever; as long as the sun his name shall remain. In him shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed; all the nations shall proclaim his happiness. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous deeds. And blessed forever be his glorious name; may the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen. Amen. The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended. MASS CHANGES Over the last few weeks, this section of the bulletin has given an overall explanation of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Over the next few months, each part of the this section of the Mass will be explained in more specific detail starting with the Preface of the Eucharistic Prayer in next week’s bulletin. The Eucharistic Prayer, being the center and highpoint of the entire celebration, is a summary of what it means for the Church to celebrate the Eucharist. It is a statement of praise and thanksgiving for God’s works of salvation as well as an action which makes the Eucharist, rendering present both the body and blood of the Lord and his great redeeming actions. In language that is poetic and biblical, the priest, addressing the Father in the name of Christ, speaks to and on behalf of the whole assembly which professes its faith and gives its assent by joining in the initial dialogue and the acclamations.
