Abraham Lincoln
Your child will soon read “Abraham Lincoln,” a nonfiction selection that
summarizes the life of Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States.
Born in Kentucky in 1809, Abraham Lincoln was president during the most difficult
period in the history of the United States—the Civil War. He is regarded by many
people as the greatest American president because he stood up for a united country
and the abolition of slavery.
Abraham Lincoln was found to be a great leader during wartime. After your
child has finished reading “Abraham Lincoln,” help your child research and write a
paragraph about any other U.S. general or president who led people with wisdom and
courage during a time of war or critical conditions.

Your child will study the following vocabulary words in the upcoming week. Please
review the meanings of these words with your child: politics—the activity of
government and running for offices; legislator—a member of the part of government
that makes laws; debates—public discussions of issues by people who disagree;
intelligence—the ability to think, learn, and understand; rebelling—to fight against
authority; liberty—freedom to act, think, or speak as one pleases.
Spelling
Your child will study the following spelling words in the upcoming week. Please review

Su hijo(a) pronto leerá “Abraham Lincoln”, una selección de no ficción que resume
la vida de Abraham Lincoln, el presidente dieciseisavo de Estados Unidos. Nacido
en Kentucky en 1809, Abraham Lincoln fue presidente durante el período más difícil
de la historia de Estados Unidos, la Guerra Civil. Muchos piensan que fue el mejor
presidente de Estados Unidos porque se mostró firme a favor de la unidad del país y
de la abolición de la esclavitud.
Abraham Lincoln resultó un gran dirigente en época de guerra. Cuando su
hijo(a) haya terminado de leer “Abraham Lincoln”, usted quizás quiera ayudarlo(a) a
investigar y escribir un párrafo sobre cualquier otro general o presidente de Estados
