Trainspotting the Swiss way!
Husband and wife production
team Chris Harnett and Sue
Knight are well versed in tramping up the Alps in search of
interesting train journeys.
The pair’s travelogues are
aired in England, France,
Germany, Scandinavia and
Italy on satellite, screened
prime time in the US and sold
on video in Japan, the USA,
Europe and Switzerland where
the train-tourism market is one
of the keenest in Europe.
Chris and Sue are former BBC
and ITV professionals who
decided to set up MITV with
their own facilities in
Southampton.
They just switched to the JVC
DIGITAL S format with a
BR-D750 editing recorder, a
BR-D350 source player and a
BR-D40 dockable recorder
adapted to fit their Ikegami
camera equipment.
They are full of praise for
DIGITAL S: " Besides the
advantage of no drop-out, it
gives startingly good images;
we can run time-coded material off the back of the camera
for logging when abroad,
meaning less equipment to
transport to Switzerland. Also
there is the advantage of
being able to use 90-minute
tapes on the field recorder,
something which could only be
done on SP with a bulky
machine. There is no differen-
ce in quality between
DIGITAL S and formats which
are £20,000 more expensive."
"We often have to take optically difficult shots which
require crushing the blacks
and stretching the whites via
TBC controls in post-production to produce correctly
contrasting pictures. Analogue
formats produce noise limiting
the range of manipulation, but
DIGITAL S is so clean we can
enhance pictures to a much
larger degree."
The pair spend a great deal
travelling the Swiss railways
for their films, very much in
the Great Railway Journeys
mode. Once the programmes
are completed, voice overs are
added in English, German,
French, with some episodes
being dubbed in Italian and
Japanese.
"MITV films are very much for
the travel connoisseur. The sellthrough travel market in
Switzerland means our videos
are not only sold in the shops
but also in stations and on
trains. It’s big business out
there, " added Chris. "friends
of ours who are pretty good
railway film makers can’t
believe we have dumped our
Digital Betacam mastering for
DIGITAL S. But we have - and
we’re glad we did."

Wohl kaum jemand kennt die
Bahnstrecken in den Alpen so gut wie
das Ehepaar Chris Harnett und Sue
Knight, das stets auf der Suche nach
interessanten Zugreisen in dieser
malerischen Umgebung ist.
Die Videobeiträge des Ehepaars
werden in Deutschland, England,
Frankreich, Italien, Skandinavien und
sogar in den USA zur besten
Sendezeit ausgestrahlt und in Europa,
Japan und den USA auch auf Video
verkauft. Gerade die Schweiz ist
dabei ein besonders attraktiver Markt
für den Bahntourismus.
Chris Harnett und Sue Knight sind
ehemalige Mitarbeiter von BBC und
ITV, die sich mit ihrer eigenen
Gesellschaft MITV im englischen
Southampton selbständig gemacht
haben.
Mit Anschaffung des Schnittrekorders
BR-D750, des Abspielgeräts BR-D350
und des Docking-Rekorders BR-D40
zum Anschluß an die IkegamiKameraausrüstung hat man gerade
die Umstellung auf DIGITAL S von
JVC abgeschlossen.
"Neben der Tatsache, daß keine
Drop-Outs auftreten, kann auch die
hohe Bildqualität von DIGITAL S voll
und ganz überzeugen. Während der
Aufnahme können wir zu
Protokollzwecken Time-Codes
einfügen. Dadurch brauchen wir bei
unseren Reisen in die Schweiz
weniger Ausrüstungsgegenstände
mitzunehmen. Darüber hinaus können
wir vor Ort mit 90-Minuten-Bändern
arbeiten, was uns sonst nur im
SP-Modus und mit sperriger
Kameratechnik möglich wäre.
Zwischen DIGITAL S und den über
60.000 DM teureren Geräten können
wir absolut keinen
Qualitätsunterschied feststellen."
"Wir stehen oft vor der Aufgabe,
schwierige Aufnahmesituationen
nachzubearbeiten, indem wir über
Modifikationen des
Zeitfehlerausgleichs (TBC) bei der
Postproduktion die Schwarztöne
komprimieren und die Weißtöne
dehnen. Die analogen Formate
produzieren leider soviel Rauschen,
daß die
Nachbearbeitungsmöglichkeiten
begrenzt sind. Mit DIGITAL S erhalten
wir wesentlich sauberere Bilder."
Für seine Filme hat das Paar bereits
viele Reisen in Schweizer Zügen
unternommen, meist im klassischen
Stil. Nachdem die Filme fertiggestellt
sind, erfolgt die Vertonung in deutsch,
englisch und französisch. Einige
Episoden werden auch in italienisch
und japanisch vertont.
"Die Filme von MITV richten sich an
den anspruchsvollen Touristen. Unsere
Filme werden in der Schweiz nicht
nur in den einschlägigen
Fachgeschäften verkauft, sondern
auch in Bahnhöfen und Zügen. Das
ist dort ein glänzendes Geschäft,
"betont Chris Harnett. "Freunde von
uns, die ebenfalls recht anspruchsvolle Eisenbahnfilmer sind, konnten gar
nicht glauben, daß wir unsere DigitalBetacam-Mastering-Ausrüstung gegen
DIGITAL S eingetauscht haben. Aber
genauso ist es, und wir sind froh
darüber."
PRINTED DIGITALLY IN BELGIUM
Tourisme ferroviaire - la voie suisse.
Chris Harnett et Sue Knight, mariés dans la vie, forment aussi une équipe de production spécialisée dans les randonnées alpestres
à la recherche de trajets de train intéressants.
Notre couple de spécialistes du voyage est branché via satellite sur l'Angleterre, la France, l'Allemagne, la Scandinavie et l'Italie,
diffusé aux heures de grande audience aux Etats-Unis et disponible en vidéo au Japon, aux Etats-Unis, en Europe et en Suisse où
le marché du tourisme ferroviaire est un des plus plaisants du Vieux Continent.
Chris et Sue, deux anciens de la BBC et d'ITV, ont décidé de lancer MITV avec leurs propres installations à Southampton.
Ils viennent de passer au format DIGITAL S de JVC avec un magnétoscope de montage BR-D750, un lecteur BR-D350 et un
enregistreur dockable BR-D40 adapté sur leur caméra Ikegami.
Ils ne se lassent pas de vanter les mérites du DIGITAL S: "Non seulement il offre l'avantage de ne présenter aucune pertes de
signal, mais les images sont magnifiques. Nous pouvons utiliser du matériel à codage temporel dès la sortie caméra pour l'enregistrement lorsque nous sommes à l'étranger, ce qui se traduit par moins d'équipement à transporter en Suisse. Le magnétoscope
dockable prend les cassettes de 90 minutes, un avantage quand on travaille en extérieur, que seule une grosse machine SP
pourrait offrir. Il n'y a aucune différence de qualité entre le DIGITAL S et les formats qui coûtent 20.000 £ de plus."
"Il nous arrive souvent de devoir filmer dans des conditions optiques difficiles qui exigent de comprimer les noirs et d'expanser les
blancs par un correcteur de base de temps en post-production, de manière à obtenir un contraste correct dans l'image.
Les formats analogiques souffrent d'un bruit de fond qui limite les traitements possibles tandis qu'avec le DIGITAL S, le signal est si
propre qu'on peut bien plus intensifier l'image."
Le couple passe une bonne partie de son temps à parcourir et filmer le réseau suisse de chemin de fer, assez dans le style des
Grands Trains. Quand les programmes sont achevés, les commentaires sont ajoutés en anglais, en allemand, en français; certains
épisodes sont doublés en italien et en japonais.
"Les films de MITV sont très appréciés par les amateurs de voyages. En Suisse, nos cassettes se vendent non seulement en magasin
mais aussi dans les gares et dans les trains. Les affaires tournent bien ici," ajoute Chris. "Des amis, bons cinéastes ferroviaires
aussi, ont peine à croire que nous avons abandonné notre Betacam numérique pour le DIGITAL S. Et pourtant oui, et nous en
sommes très contents."
Trainspotting – alla maniera svizzera!
La società di produzione formata dai coniugi Chris Harnett e Sue Knight è specializzata nell’avventura sulle Alpi alla ricerca di
interessanti percorsi ferroviari.
I documentari turistici girati dalla coppia vengono trasmessi in Inghilterra, Francia, Germania, Scandinavia e Italia sul satellite,
vanno in prima serata negli USA e sono venduti in videocassetta in Giappone, negli Stati Uniti, in Europa e in Svizzera dove il
mercato del turismo ferroviario è tra i più fiorenti d’Europa.
Chris e Sue sono ex professionisti della BBC e ITV che hanno deciso di istituire MITV con strutture proprie a Southampton.
Sono appena passati al formato DIGITAL S di JVC con un registratore per montaggi BR-D750, un lettore BR-D350 e un
registratore dockable BR-D40 adattato per l’uso con la loro camera Ikegami.
Hanno parole di grande apprezzamento per il DIGITAL S: "Oltre al vantaggio che non vi sono perdite di qualità, assicura immagini di qualità davvero incredibile; possiamo utilizzare materiale con time code per i collegamenti dall’estero, e questo significa
meno apparecchiature da trasportare in Svizzera. Inoltre, possiamo utilizzare nastri da 90 minuti sul registratore di trama, cosa
che era possibile soltanto in SP con una macchina voluminosa. Non c’è differenza di qualità tra il DIGITAL S e formati che costano 20.000 sterline di più".
"Spesso dobbiamo realizzare riprese difficili dal punto di vista ottico che ci impongono di ridurre i neri a favore dei bianchi con
controlli TBC in postproduzione per ottenere immagini correttamente contrastate. I formati analogici producono disturbi che limitano la portata degli interventi di manipolazione, ma il DIGITAL S è così pulito che possiamo lavorare liberamente per migliorare le
immagini a un grado molto piú elevato".
La coppia ha trascorso molto tempo viaggiando in treno con le ferrovie svizzere per girare film alla maniera del Great Railway
Journeys. Una volta completati, ai programmi vengono aggiunti commenti sonori in inglese, tedesco e francese e alcuni episodi
vengono doppiati in italiano e giapponese.
"I film MITV sono destinati agli intenditori del viaggio. Il mercato in Svizzera è organizzato in modo tale per cui i nostri video non
sono venduti soltanto nei negozi ma anche nelle stazioni e sui treni dove si fanno molti buoni affari", ha aggiunto Chris. "Alcuni
nostri amici che sono anche piuttosto bravi nel girare video ferroviari non riescono a credere che abbiamo abbandonato il nostro
sistema di mastering Digital Betacam a favore del DIGITAL S. Ma l’abbiamo fatto e ne siamo davvero contenti".
Buscando trenes - ¡al modo suizo!
El equipo de producción formado por el matrimonio Chris Harnett y Sue Knight está muy habituado a ascender los Alpes
buscando interesantes viajes en tren.
Los documentales sobre viajes que esta pareja hace, se emiten por satélite en Inglaterra, Francia, Alemania, Península
Escandinava e Italia, se proyectan en los EE.UU. a las horas de máxima audiencia y se venden en vídeo en Japón, EE.UU.,
Europa y Suiza, país este último donde el mercado del turismo en tren es uno de los que más entusiasmo suscitan en Europa.
Chris y Sue antiguos profesionales de la BBC e ITV decidieron crear MITV con sus propios medios en Southampton.
Acaban de pasarse al formato JVC DIGITAL S con un grabador de edición BR-D750, un reproductor de fuente BR-D350 y un
grabador acoplable BR-D40 para ser adaptados a su equipo de cámara Ikegami.
No se cansan de elogiar el DIGITAL S: "Además de la ventaja que tiene el hecho de que no haya pérdida de señales, este
sistema ofrece imágenes asombrosamente buenas; podemos pasar el material grabando los tiempos desde detrás del equipo
para, cuando estamos en el exterior, hacer el parte de cámara, lo que significa un menor número de equipos que tenemos que
transportar a Suiza. Asimismo, existe la ventaja de poder utilizar cintas de 90 minutos en el grabador de campo, algo que sólo
podría hacerse en SP con un equipo estremadamente voluminoso. No hay diferencia de calidad entre DIGITAL S y formatos
20.000 libras más caros."
"Muchas veces tenemos que hacer tomas ópticamente difíciles que requieren comprimir los negros y estirar los blancos en
postproducción mediante controles TBC para obtener imágenes correctamente contrastadas. Los formatos analógicos producen
ruido lo que limita el margen de manipulación, pero con DIGITAL S es tan limpio que podemos realzar las imágenes en un grado
mucho mayor."
Esta pareja ha pasado mucho tiempo viajando en los ferrocarriles suizos para sus filmaciones, de una manera muy semejante a
como se muestra en los Grandes Viajes en Ferrocarril. Cuando se terminan los programas, se les superponen comentarios en
"off" en inglés, alemán y francés, y se doblan algunos episodios en italiano y japonés.
"Las películas de MITV son muy valiosas para el viajero experto. El mercado de viajes se extiende por todo el país suizo, lo que
quiere decir que nuestros vídeos no sólo se venden en las tiendas, sino también en las
estaciones y en los propios trenes. Es un gran negocio en esa nación," dijo Chris.
"Tenemos amigos que son muy buenos productores de películas de ferrocarril y que no
pueden creer que nos hayamos deshecho de nuestra Digital Betacam para pasarnos a
DIGITAL S. Pero lo hemos hecho, y no nos arrepentimos, al contrario estamos muy
satisfechos de haberlo hecho."
