Pationic® Glycerol Esters
Polymer additive solutions
Food grade Pationic®
glycerol esters function as:
„ Mold release agents
„ Antifog agents
„ Antistats
The Pationic® line offers polymer manufacturers and
compounders mold release and antistatic agents, as well as
lubricants, acid/catalyst neutralizers, dispersants, processing
aids, and antifog agents. These are used in plastic-based food
packaging and containers, as well as, plastic foam for
packaging furniture and other durable goods.

What are glycerol esters?
Glycerol esters are chemical combinations of glycerine and fatty acid. Nature
provides us with an abundant supply in the form of fats and oils. Chemically, these
natural products are glycerol triesters. Examples include: soybean oil, tallow, lard,
and sunflower oil. Most industrial applications for glycerol esters require mono or
mono/diesters for optimum performance. These products are loosely classified as
GMS (glycerol monostearate), a solid at room temperature, and GMO (glycerol
monooleate), a semi-solid. Corbion Caravan manufactures mono and mono/
diesters for the polymer industry.
The chemistry behind the product
Animal fats and vegetable oils are used as starting raw materials for the
manufacture of GMO and GMS. If desired, these triesters are chemically hardened
by hydrogenation to make them solid at room temperature. Hard or soft, the
triester then undergoes glycerolysis, the primary chemical reaction for making
mono and diesters. The final product of this reaction, after excess glycerine is
removed, is the mono/diester, with a small amount of triester. It can be further
refined, by distillation, to a 95% monoester product.

Polymer additive solutions
Antistats, Antifogs, Mold Release and Lubricants
Our product line is diverse. As the mono content varies, as the double bonds increase or decrease, performance properties are
altered. The chemistry affects solubility, affinity for water, migration in polymers, lubrication properties, volatility, shelf-life,
crystallinity, and surfactant activity. Consequently, Corbion offers a wide range of glycerol ester solutions to antistat, antifog,
lubrication, dispersion, release, and polymer processing problems. In addition to our standard products, custom solutions can be
developed and produced to meet a customer’s specific requirements.
