MISSION INTENTION for AUGUST: That the local Church in Africa, faithfully proclaiming the Gospel, may
promote peace and justice.
The following pastoral comment was released by the Apostleship of Prayer on the Mission Intention
The lack of peace and justice is evident in Africa. That was one of the reasons in favor of holding the
second assembly of the African Bishops’ Synod in Rome in 2009, even though the first had taken place
only 15 years earlier. The events of recent years have only confirmed the fact that there is neither peace
nor justice in Africa. The big revolts in North Africa, with reversals of power, the elections in most
countries without democracy or transparency, even leading to armed conflicts; the appropriation of
power by certain individuals, and the refusal of change despite their advanced age; the pauperisation of
the masses; the use of children in armed conflicts; the rape of women; the persecution of Christians
here and there…. are so many real indicators which show us the sombre face of Africa.
And yet the gospel arrived in Africa a very long time ago, already in the first centuries. And many African
countries have celebrated the centenary of evangelization. However, the need for a real, in-depth
evangelization is still to be felt. As Benedict XVI says in the post-synodal apostolic exhortation Africae
Munus, all this shows the need to ‘evangelize the African soul in depth.’ (AM 91).
Even if it is true that Africa is ‘the spiritual lung of humanity’ (AM 13), it is also true that ‘fidelity to the
proclamation of the gospel’ remains a challenge. For the gospel is the true source of peace and justice.
At the birth of Jesus the angels sang ‘peace on earth’ (Lk 2:14), and at the end of his life Jesus reassured
his disciples: ‘Peace I leave you, not as the world gives’ (Jn.14:27). If peace and justice have to be ‘built’,
it is on the foundation which is Christ that this building will be done (1 Cor 3:11). How to set about it?
For each local church to decide! That is our prayer, all this month, with the Pope, for Africa.

El siguiente comentario pastoral fue liberado por el apostolado de la oración en la Misión Intención
La falta de paz y justicia es evidente en África. Esa es una de las razones en favor de la celebración de la
segunda asamblea del Sínodo de Obispos africanos en Roma en 2009, aunque la primera había tenido
lugar sólo 15 años antes. Los acontecimientos de los últimos años han hecho más que confirmar el
hecho de que no hay ni paz ni justicia en África. Las grandes rebeliones en el Norte de África, con
retrocesos del poder, las elecciones en la mayoría de los países sin democracia y transparencia, llegando
incluso a los conflictos armados; la apropiación de poder de algunas personas, Y el rechazo del cambio,
pese a su avanzada edad, la pauperización de las masas; la utilización de niños en los conflictos
armados; la violación de las mujeres; la persecución de los Cristianos aquí y allá…. Son tantos los
indicadores reales que nos muestran el sombrío rostro de África.
Y, sin embargo, el evangelio llegó a África hace mucho tiempo, ya en los primeros siglos. Y muchos
países africanos han celebrado el centenario de la evangelización. Sin embargo, la necesidad de una
verdadera evangelización en profundidad todavía no se han hecho sentir. Como dice Benedicto XVI en la
exhortación apostólica post-sinodal Africae Munus, todo esto demuestra la necesidad de "evangelizar el
espíritu africano en profundidad." (AM 91).
En el momento del nacimiento de Jesús los ángeles cantaron "paz en la tierra" (Lc 2:14 ), y al final de su
vida Jesús aseguró sus discípulos: "La paz os dejo, no como la da el mundo" (14:27 ). Si la paz y la justicia
tienen que ser "construir", está en el fundamento que es Cristo, que este edificio se llevará a cabo (1 Cor
3:11 ). ¿Cómo hacerlo? Para cada iglesia local para decidir! Esa es nuestra oración, todo este mes, con el
Papa, África.
