Be Safe – Get Checked for Chlamydia
What is it? Chlamydia is the most common
Testing and Treatment
sexually transmitted disease. You could have it and
not even know it.
A simple urine test or pelvic exam is used
to test for Chlamydia. Annual testing is
recommended for all sexually active women
age 25 years and younger, or for women who
have new or more than one sex partner.
It can damage your reproductive organs and
make you infertile. Both the disease itself and the
damage it causes are often silent. By the time you
realize you have it, it may be too late. That’s why
getting tested is so important.
Symptoms The majority of infected people
have no symptoms. If symptoms do occur, they may
appear within 1 to 3 weeks after exposure.
Symptoms may include:
• Vaginal discharge
• Burning sensation when urinating
But remember, you may not see or feel anything.
Did you know that women ages 15 to 19 have
a high rate of Chlamydia? Pregnant women
should also be tested because it can be
passed on to their newborn child. Men can get
it too and can re-infect their partner if both are
not treated at the same time.
But there’s hope. Chlamydia can be easily
treated and cured with a single dose of
antibiotics. So don’t let anything stop you from
getting checked out.
