II.- INTRODUCCIÓ A L'ASSIGNATURA / INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE
This course deals with the translation problems posed by the creative and aesthetic use of
language in a variety of text types (advertisements, audiovisual scripts, op-ed articles, fiction,
songs) and registers, and in both written and audiovisual mediums (dubbing, subtitling).
Aesthetic and creative language is characterized by drawing attention to itself, by greater
interdependence between content and form, greater use of polysemy, ambiguity and metaphor,
and by open interpretation (while Specialized Translation I deals with denotative and informative
texts which are based on objects well defined in the extralinguistic world and whose
interpretation is relatively closed).

IV.- OBJECTIUS GENERALS / COURSE GENERAL OBJECTIVES
To acquire a theoretical knowledge and practical competence of translating creative and
aesthetic texts in English into Spanish, and in Spanish into English.
To know criteria for translation criticism and assessment of creative texts
To know the principles, priorities and constraints of dubbing and subtitling
To further students' ability to think critically about creative translation

V.- CONTINGUTS / CONTENTS
-A brief review of the basic theoretical premises and notions in translation studies (principles,
intention, purpose, orientation, strategies, methods, procedures, errors) and of models of
translation quality assessment and criticism.
-Translation problems (grammar; oral and written modes; figurative language and stylistic
choices in meaning, syntax and sound patterns; humour; cultural references, proper names,
register, dialects, chronolects, ideology) as seen in a range of texts (advertisements, audiovisual
scripts, op-ed articles, fiction, songs).
- Modes of translation: for performance, dubbing, subtitling; their priorities and constraints
- Editing and revising translated texts.
-Professional aspects of translation: agencies, associations, tools.

To master theoretical notions of translation studies in order to apply them to translation
practice and translation self-assessment
To analyse and assess published translations according to given models and criteria

Since students’ translations is assessed collectively in practice classes (as mentioned in the teaching methodology),
students are expected to carry out the translation practice in advance of the scheduled date.

X.- METODOLOGIA / METHODOLOGY
The course is basically practical. Lectures deal with theoretical and practical translation
problems.
The students’ daily practice is vital, both in examining model translated texts and in producing
assigned translations. Correction of students’ translations is carried out collectively in practice
classes, where the cause and solution of errors and inadequacies is discussed.
XI.- AVALUACIÓ DE L’APRENENTATGE / LEARNING ASSESSMENT
Class work and homework will be filed in a portfolio which will be assessed at the end of the
course. The teacher may ask for the student’s work at random during the course. (20%)
Written Assignment (20 %)
Final exams in which students translate a given source text (one for direct translation, and one
for inverse translation), with all material they may need, and within a certain limit of time. (60%)
The teacher may require a personal interview with a student in order to better evaluate her or
his portfolio, assignment or exams.
