Monitoring EU Agri-Food Trade:
Development until July 2016
July 2016 – moderate slowdown in
EU agri-food trade
The monthly value of EU agri-food exports in
July 2016 reached EUR 10.5 billion and, thus,
slowed down by almost EUR 700 million
compared to the high performance in July 2015
and also was slightly lower than in June 2016.
Most important reductions in export values (July
2016 compared to July 2015) were noted for
Hong Kong EUR -83 million), Russia (EUR -81
million) and Algeria (EUR -74 million). On the
other hand, exports to some Asian (India, China,
Philippines, Vietnam) and North-East African
(Sudan, Ethiopia, Libya) destinations increased
compared to last year's data for July.
While export values for wheat increased in July
2016 compared to 2015, exports of other cereals
went down. For the cereals marketing year
2015/16 the EU was the first exporter in the
world market, both for soft wheat and barley.
The highest increases in monthly export values
were again achieved for pork (+30%), followed
by fresh, chilled or dried vegetables, while
exports of wine, raw hides and skins, and milk
powder lost in July 2016.
In July 2016, agri-food imports to the EU went
down by EUR 940 million, even more than
exports, thus leading to a further increase in
the monthly net trade surplus from EUR 1.8
billion in July 2015 to EUR 2.1 billion in July
2016.
12-month period:
Pig meat exports recovering
For the 12-months period August 2015 to July
2016, EU agri-food exports reached a value of
more than EUR 128 billion, corresponding to an
increase by 0.7% in value terms compared to
the same period one year ago.
Major gains were achieved in values of agri-food
exports to the USA (EUR + 1.8 billion; +10%)
and China (EUR +1.6 billion; +17%), followed
by increases in exports to Saudi Arabia (EUR
+0.4 billion). Agri-food exports to Israel,
Vietnam, Switzerland and Australia each
increased by EUR 200 million or more in the
twelve-months period. In contrast to the
increase in export values to China, exports to
Hong Kong went down by EUR 1.2 billion (26%). Export values to Russia continued to go
down from EUR 6.2 billion (August 2014 to July
2015) to EUR 5.5 billion (July 2015 to June
2016), i.e. a reduction in values by 12.5%, but
also exports to Algeria and Egypt went down
over this period.
Analysing the performance over the last twelve
months per product category, export values
increased in particular for pig meat (EUR
+1.1 billion; +29% compared to export values in
the 12-months period one year ago), fresh,
chilled or dried vegetables (EUR +445 million;
+17%), live animals
(EUR +427 million;
+20%) and wine (EUR +313 million; +3%). In
relative terms, high increases in export values
were also seen for butter and fresh milk
products, as well as for bovine meat.
Raw hides and skins (EUR -1.3 billion; -42%),
wheat (EUR -1.1 billion; -15.5%) and milk
powders (EUR -703 million; -16%) lost most in
export values over the last 12 months.
Reductions in export revenues were also noted
for other cereals, poultry meat and fresh fruit.
(extraction date for statistics: 14/09/2016)
Ukraine, Ivory Coast and Argentina
with top increases in agri-food
exports to EU
Agri-food imports from third countries in the
period August 2015 to July 2016 came into the
EU at a value of EUR 112 billion, i.e. an increase
by 2% compared to the same period one year
ago. The export surplus for the 12-months
period stands at almost EUR 16.4 billion, about
EUR 1.3 billion lower than one year ago.
Over the last 12 months, EU agri-food imports
from Ukraine showed the highest increase in
value terms (EUR +885 million; +25%). Import
values also went up remarkably for Ivory Coast
by EUR +691 million (+25%), Argentina by
EUR 529 million (+10%). Peru (EUR +293
million; +17%), Australia (EUR +223 million;
+12%), Colombia (EUR +211 million) and
Turkey (EUR +205 million) followed in our
ranking for the most dynamic origins for EU agrifood imports.
The most important reductions in import values
were recorded for Brazil (EUR -1.5 billion),
Indonesia (EUR -496 million) and Tunisia (EUR
-206 million). The USA, contrary to previous
periods, lost in export performance to the EU
(EUR -156 million; -1.4%).
Looking at imports per product category, the
highest increase in values over the last 12
months was for tropical fruit, nuts and spices
(EUR +931 million; +8%). Imports also
increased particularly for cocoa beans (EUR
+786 million; +22%), cereals other than wheat
(EUR +697 million), oilseeds other than soya
beans (EUR +570 million; 21%) and for
vegetable oils, other than palm and olive oil,
fresh vegetables, citrus and other fresh fruit.
On the other hand, import values decreased in
particular for commodities such as unroasted
coffee and tea in bulk (EUR -1 billion; -12.5%),
oilcakes (EUR -867 million; -10%), palm oil,
palm kernel and coconut oil (EUR -496 million;
-9%).
