Stay safe near the new MAX Orange Line
Quiet zones
As construction of the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Transit Project reaches completion in
spring 2015, light rail trains are traveling along the route to test systems and to familiarize train
operators with the new line. In addition, TriMet bus operators are training on the transitways
located at both approaches to Tilikum Crossing.
Be safe to stay safe
Stay safe when driving, walking and biking around MAX Orange Line crossings, station
areas and trains. It takes MAX trains two blocks to stop, and trains can’t swerve to miss you.
Remember:
• No trespassing—Do
trespass on tracks or at closed stations and Park & Ride lots.

A quiet zone is a section of a rail line that contains one or more consecutive public crossings at
which locomotive horns are not routinely sounded.
The light rail project, in partnership with the City of Portland, the City of Milwaukie, Union Pacific
Railroad and Portland & Western Railroad, has made safety improvements to crossings in SE
Portland and Milwaukie that will allow these crossings to be designated quiet zones for both
freight and light rail trains.
In a quiet zone, freight and light rail operators are not required to blow their train horns as they
approach a crossing, although they may use the horn at their discretion, as in cases of emergency
such as trespassing on the tracks by a vehicle or a pedestrian, or for adjacent construction.
Train horns may also still be used to comply with other federal regulations or railroad operating
rules. In addition, railroad warning equipment at the intersections will continue to flash and ding
while trains approach and pass through a crossing.
The improved rail crossings in SE Portland are at SE 8th, 11th and
12th avenues; in downtown Milwaukie, the improved crossings
are at SE Mailwell Drive, SE Harrison, Monroe and Washington

Tenga cuidado cada vez que conduce, camina o monta bicicleta
alrededor de los cruces, áreas de la estación y tranvías de la
Línea Naranja MAX. Le toma dos cuadras a los tranvías MAX
para poder detenerse ya que éstos no pueden desviarse
repentinamente para evitar un accidente. Recuerde:
• La entrada está prohibida—No entre a las vías ferroviarias o
a las estaciones cerradas y estacionamientos de Park & Ride.
Entrar es ilegal y puede causarle una multa o encarcelación
• Manténgase fuera de las vías férreas—cuide su vida
• Obedezca todas las señales, mire a ambas direcciones y
cruce las vías solamente en los cruces señalados
• Siempre espere a un tranvía—los tranvías MAX viajan a toda

Zonas tranquilas
Una zona tranquila es una sección de la línea del tren que
contiene uno o más cruces públicos consecutivos en los
cuales las bocinas de las locomotoras no suenan.
El proyecto de tranvía, en asociación con la Ciudad de
Portland, la Ciudad de Milwaukie, Ferrocarriles Union Pacific
y Ferrocarriles Portland & Western, ha realizado mejoras de
