CMS SECONDSHIFT CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
STUDENTS FOR GLOBAL CHANGE
Do you see much to be done to improve our world? Do you want to act upon the power that students have for making positive
change? In this class, students will discuss current events and situations that are of interest to them. From these discussions, we
will make a list of topics, find and view documentaries that are pertinent and discuss the situations. We will then decide on a group
project to address our concerns and affect change.

Students will film each other and then before the final class the teacher will edit together all of the films to make a class
"documentary" for students to share.

Taught by Dani Salyer. Class is 1.5 hours on Thursdays
CREEPY CRITTERS & MONSTER BABIES
Join Ms. Berry to have fun and learn some great sewing skills! We’ll create unique stuffed creatures known alternately as Creepy
Critters or Monster Babies. We’ll learn how to cut and pin fabric and use sewing machines to construct our critters.

Class is held from February 16 – April 21 on Tuesdays or Thursdays for 1.5 hours

Taught by Ms. Berry. Choose to take the class on one of the days offered (Tuesdays or Thursdays.)

Limited to 10 students in each class. Registration is first-come, first-served.
QUILTING
Students will learn to use quilting equipment such as sewing machines, cutting boards, needle and thread while learning the art of
applique and basic quilting methods. Taught by Janice Craig. Class is 1.5 hours on Thursdays.
UPCYCLED ART – CREATING BEAUTIFUL PIECES FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS
Feed your inner scavenger! Students will learn to create amazing art from surprisingly common and overlooked materials, using
reclaimed objects to make stunning pieces of art.
 Class is 1.5 hours and held on Mondays at CMS. Taught by Rochelle Norwood of Scavenger Industries.
BEATS LAB with JAZZ ASPEN SNOWMASS
The JAS Beat Lab is an opportunity for small groups of students to compose, arrange, and mix original music using the Berklee
Pulse program and the professional recording software Reason 8. The program is designed to introduce students to the concepts
of computer-based music production in a studio environment while having them create the music that is being recorded.

Students will develop keyboard and programming skills, as well as an understanding of how to collaborate effectively. Class is
1.5 hours on Tuesdays. Taught by Mark Johnson of Jazz Aspen Snowmass
BECOME A RADIO DJ!
Students will learn what it takes to be a radio DJ. We’ll tour the KDNK station, practice communication skills, interview techniques
and audio editing to create a youth radio program that we will air on KDNK Carbondale Community Access Radio.
 Class is held from March 3 – April 21 on Thursdays for 1.5 hours at KDNK radio station, 76 S 2nd St, Carbondale.
 Access AfterSchool will supervise the students from Carbondale Middle School to the station. Parents may pick up their
students at the station at 5:15 pm or arrange for alternate transportation from there. Students will not be brought back to CMS.
 During classes on March 10, April 7 and April 21st the students will participate in live radio broadcasts on KDNK!
 Taught by Beth Wysong, Executive Director of Programs for the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program.
DANCE MAKING
Join and be inspired by hip hop, jazz, gymnastics, yoga, ballet and other forms of movement. Learn about creating dances,
performing dances, and the creative process. Opportunities to perform your work will be available and encouraged. Come share
your creativity and movement ideas in dance making class!

This class will be held at The Launchpad, 76 S 4th St, Carbondale. Access staff will supervise the students from CMS to
the Launchpad and parents may pick up their students there or arrange for alternate transportation home. Students will not be
brought back to CMS.

Taught by Megan Shapiro. Class is 1.5 hours long on Thursdays.
GUITAR
Students will learn basic guitar techniques including chords, melody, rhythm, and simple lead playing. Students will learn to play
songs, as well as jam with one another. Limit 10 students. Taught by Mean Ol' Mr. Gray on Tuesdays. Class is 1.25 hours.
 Class is held from February 16 – April 19 on Tuesdays from 3:45 pm – 5:00 pm
BOULDERING CLUB
In Bouldering Club we build our strength and technique for rock climbing and solving bouldering problems.

Offered 1 time per week on Tuesdays at the Carbondale Middle School climbing gym.

Taught by Laurel Smith. Class is 1.25 hours and dismisses at 5:00 pm.
ROCK CLIMBING @ THE CARBONDALE REC CENTER
This class is designed for middle school age students and is a great introductory climbing class. The class will take the participant
from the ground up and teach them about bouldering, autobelay use and how to top rope climb and belay on our roped routes.

Class will be held from 3:45 – 5:00 pm on Mondays from March 7 – April 18 at the Carbondale Recreation Center, 567
Colorado Ave, Carbondale.

Access staff will supervise the students from CMS to the Rec Center and parents may pick up their students there or arrange
for alternate transportation home. Students will not be brought back to CMS.
FLYFISHING
Learn how to cast, tie flies, identify what the fish are eating and read the water. We’ll also cover some basic river ecology topics.

Due to winter weather, this class will begin on February 29 and end on April 25. Taught by Ron Acee of Trout Unlimited.

There will be field trips to the local rivers to try out what we’ve learned. We’ll discuss dates for river trips on the first day of
class. Field trip permission slips will go home to parents at that time. Class is 1.5 hours long on Mondays.
YOGA
We will have fun and relax at the same time while learning yoga stances along with stretches and yoga flow.

Taught by Ms. Land. Class is held on Mondays and will dismiss at 4:30.

CREATURAS ATTERADORAS Y BEBES DE MONSTROS
Unite con Ms. Berry y diviertete aprendiendo las habilidades de tejer. Crearemos creaturas y monstros unicas llenas de algodon.
Aprenderemos como cortar y tela y usar una maquina de tejer para construir nuestras creaturas.

Fechas de las clases son 16 febrero a 21 abril.

Enseñado por Ms. Berry. Clase es 1.5 horas y puedes escojer el Martes o el Jueves.

Limitado a 10 estudiantes cada clase. Estudiantes van a ser escojidos por orden del dia que recibimos el papeleo.
ACOLCHADO (QUILTING)

Estudiantes aprenderan como usar el equipaje de acolchado, machinas te tejir, costuras y mucho mas!

Estudiantes aprenderan el arte de acochado y diferentes tacticas.

Enseñada por Janice Craig. Clase es 1.5 horas los jueves despues de la escuela.
ARTE UPCYCLE- CREADO HERMOSURAS DE MATERIALES RECICLADOS
Suelta tu corazon verde! Estudiantes aprenderan como crear arte asombroso usando materiales communes y objetos recyclados.
 Enseñada por Rochelle Norwood de Scavenger Industries. Clase es 1.5 horas los Lunes.
BEATS LAB WITH JAZZ ASPEN SNOWMASS
El Laboratorio de golpe JAS es una oportunidad para que pequeños grupos de estudiantes para componer, arreglar, y mezclar
música original utilizando el programa Pulso Berklee y el software de grabación profesional Razón 8. El programa está diseñado
para introducir a los estudiantes a los conceptos de producción musical basado en computadora en un ambiente de estudio y al
mismo tiempo tener a crear la música que se está grabando.

Enseñada por Mark Johnson de Jazz Aspen Snowmass. Clase es de 1,5 horas los Martes.
CONVIERTETE EN DJ!
Estudiantes pueden aprender como ser un DJ de radio. Estudiantes van a recorrer la estacion de radio, practicar sus habilidades
de communicacion, entrevistar, y aprender la edicion de audio para crear un programa de radio hecho por estudiantes. El
programa va a correr en KDNK radio.

Fechas de las clases son 3 marzo a 21 abril.

Clase es 1.5 horas los jueves en KDNK, 76 S 2nd St, Carbondale. El personal de acceso supervisará los estudiantes de

CREANDO BAILES
Unete y se inspirado por el hip hop, jazz, gimnasia, yoga, ballet, y otras formas de movimiento. Aprende sobre el baile y el

de movimiento en baile en esta clase.


CLUB DE ESCALAR
En el Club de Bouldering vamos a onstruer fuerzas y tecnica para escalar montanas y resolver problemas cuando escalando.

Enseñada por Laurel Smith. Clase es 1.25 horas los martes y termina a las 5:00 pm.
ESCALANDO EN EL CENTRO DE RECREACCION DE CARBONDALE.
Esta clase esta diseñada para estudiantes de la escuela secundaria y es una gran introduccion a escalar. Estudiantes aprenderan
desde abajo asta el Cima sobre escalar, autobelay, el uso de cuerdas durante escalar, mucho mas!

Clase sera enseñada en el centro de recreacion de Carbondale, 567 Colorado Ave, Carbondale. El personal de acceso
supervisará los estudiantes de CMS para el Centro de Recreaccion y los padres pueden recoger a sus estudiantes allí o
los arreglos para el transporte a casa alternativa. Los estudiantes no serán devueltos a la CMS.

Fechas de las clases son 7 marzo a 18 abril de 3:45 - 5:00 pm.
PESCAR CON MOSCA (FLYFISHING)
Aprende como repartir la linia de pescar, amarar moscas, identificar que comen los pescados y como leer el agua. Cubriremos los
basicos de la ecologia y porque es importante para pescar.

Por la temporada clase ba a empesar Febrero 29 y terminara Abril 25.

Tomaremos viajes a el rio para tratar lo que emos aprendido. Hablaremos sobre los dias de viaje el primer dia de clase y les
daremos los permisos y el papeleo.

Enseñado por Ron Acee de Trout Unlimited. Clase es 1.5 horas los Lunes.
YOGA
 Nos divertiramos y relajamos al mismo tiempo mientras aprendiendo posturas de yoga. Aprenderemos nuevos estiramientos y
el fluido de yoga. Enseñada por Ms. Land. Clase es 1 hora y termina a las 4:30 pm.
