Notes from the classroom
Kindergarten It is time to celebrate the New Year and celebrate our new learning!
In reading, we are working on telling a beginning, middle, and end (in order) for the
stories that we read. It is really important that we use the language of first, next, and
last. These words are so important because we are going to start writing in the genre of
“How-Tos,” and when we give directions for how to do something, we will use the same
vocabulary. We will continue to use beginning and ending sounds to read words and
write words, so we encourage you to keep practicing this skill with your child as well as
working on sight words. When reading for the homework, please have your child make
personal connections to the stories with answers like: My favorite part is…. This makes
me think of … Please work on writing the numbers to 20, and also, when practicing
counting, remind your child to move the objects and then double check the total. This
ensures that your child is keeping track of how many they have and not just saying the
numbers in order. In addition, please practice figuring out what is one more and one
less than a number. Remember that it is still very chilly, and we will go outside most
days. It is important to label all of your child’s warm clothes so that they can be more
easily found if lost. Thanks!
1st Grade Wow, we can’t believe we’ve come to the end of 2013 already! This month
in science we observed the life cycles of butterflies and beetles. During math we
designed surveys, collected data, and made graphs to show our results. We also learned
to add ten to a one digit number. Our young authors wrote some very helpful directions
in their how-to writing! And last, and most importantly, we continue to grow in our
reading skills. During December we focused on retelling stories with vocabulary and
character names from the text. Proficient readers had to leap three reading levels this
quarter to stay on grade level!! Finally, we would like to wish all our students and their
families a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year!
2nd Grade The Vassar community hopes that all of our supportive families have a
happy holiday season. When school resumes in January the second graders will continue
to focus on writing in order to better prepare them for standardized testing next year. In
reading, we will continue to work on main idea and individualized next steps for each
student. Our math focus will be addition and subtraction at a variety of levels. We will
be looking at story problems in order to show students the significance of math in their
everyday world. January is going to be a busy month and we hope that everyone has an
exciting, safe, and relaxing holiday break.
3rd Grade
Happy New Year! We hope your winter break was relaxing and your time was filled with
friends and family. We are excited to begin some new learning third quarter. Our math
Investigation unit is Equal Groups Multiplication and Division, a very important unit of
study for third graders. In writing we will be working on completing report writing. Our
next unit of study is essay writing so we will be working on writing an essay to answer a
prompt. We will continue to work on reading strategies in whole group, small group and
independent practice. Please make sure you are continuing to read 150 minutes each
week at home to practice your reading strategies! As you can see, we have a lot of
important work to do.
4th Grade
In writing, fourth graders will be working on topics that they feel passionate about and
writing essays with their opinion and reasons to support their opinion. In math, we will
continue our work with computation and place value. Students will gradually increase
their working knowledge of place value as we build toward numbers in the hundred
thousands. Even though multiplication and division are not our primary focus this quarter,
please continue to review the facts to maintain fluency in these areas. Please continue
talking to your children about what they have read during their 30 minutes of nightly
reading. We hope everyone had a relaxing winter break. Thank you for your ongoing
support.
5th Grade
We are excited to see the smiling faces return from break. Hopefully all are rested and
ready for the new quarter. In math, our fifth graders will be adding, subtracting,
multiplying and dividing decimals to hundredths and comparing to thousandths. In
reading, we will continue to use discussion and dialogue to deepen our comprehension
and move beyond the literal meaning of text. Our genre for writing has us moving away
from narrative into persuasive and explanatory essays. We will also be tying reading and
writing together by expressing our thinking about what we are reading through written
responses. Weather On Earth will be the topic explored in science. Finally, we will be
discussing the growth of America in social studies. Students will tie writing and social
studies together by completing a research project.
Diverse Learning Classrooms – Ms. Nelson and Ms. Angela
Welcome back! We hope that everyone had a great Winter Break! This month’s unit will
focus on "The United States - Long Ago and Today." Students will learn about objects
and events from the past and present, and they make comparisons between the two.
Students also learn about important people from the past and how they contributed to
the development of our country. Thank you to the families that sent in additional tissue
and disinfecting wipes to help us fight back germs in the classroom. If you have not yet
sent in additional items, you can send them at any time. Let’s get off to a great 2013!
Music Notes
Mrs. Gonzalez, Music Specialist
 3rd and 5th grade students will be using recorders in music class during the 3rd quarter.
If you have previously purchased a recorder for your child to use, have your child
bring his/her instrument on their music special day beginning in January. (Recorder
orders that were due on December 13 should have arrived over winter break. The
instruments should have been issued to students who ordered them during the first
week back from break.)
 2nd and 4th grade students will be working on their performances after winter break.
2nd grade students are scheduled to perform Thursday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m. 4 th
grade students are performing one week later on Thursday, April 24, at 6:30 p.m.
Both performances will be held in the Vassar Elementary School gymnasium.
 The 2nd-5th grade Vassar choir will begin meeting on Monday, January 13th, 2014. The
Vassar choir is an extracurricular group conducted by Mrs. Gonzalez. Choir meets
before school on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:00-8:40. The choir will perform a
concert for their parents on Tuesday, April 29, at 6:30 p.m. in the Vassar Elementary
School gymnasium. All 2nd-5th grade Vassar students can participate in the choir.
Students will need to turn in a permission slip when they join the choir. If your
student does not bring home a permission slip during the first week of school in
January, they will receive one when they come to their first choir rehearsal. The choir
will only meet on days when school is in session. There will also be no choir rehearsal
on Thursday, January 23rd, because of a conference that Mrs. Gonzalez will be
attending. Calendars will be given to participating students when they attend their
first rehearsal.
Art News
Mrs. Johnson
Every grade level had a chance to start a clay project in December. They learned how to roll,
pinch, and score their clay. Some projects have been sent home and others will be on display at
the school. Clay is definitely a favorite for our students! Coming up in the New Year, different
classes will learn the art of puppet making, printmaking, paper mache’, working in foil and of
course lots of painting!
Physical Education

In Physical Education Students will also be introduced to the FITT (frequency, intensity, time and
type) principle through a variety of fitness, climbing and tumbling activities. We will also be
discussing the importance of our heart and lungs as we lead into a jump rope unit towards the
end of January. Thanks to everyone who helped out with the Y-Ties fundraiser in December.

Vassar current rating is: Improvement
To be categorized as a Performance school the Framework points earned must be at or
above 59% and an Improvement School is at our above 47% but below 59%.
Academic Achievement our rating is Approaching 12.5 out of 25 points
Academic Growth our rating is Approaching 26.8 out of 50 points
Academic Gaps our rating is Approaching 13 out of 25 points
Total is 52.3 out of 100 points
There has been a flip of Math and Reading. In the past, our Reading rating was “Does not
Meet”, and currently that is our Math score. In Reading we have moved up to “Meets”.
Vassar’s School Growth Summary
Growth percentile in Reading went from 34 th to 40th. In Math, Growth went from 62nd to
39th; Writing was stable at the 46th. The state and district expectations is for all areas to be
at the 55th percentile.
TCAP scores are used to determined growth, which we can only use 4 th and 5th grade. 3rd
grade does take TCAP”, however, they do not have data from the previous year to compare
the growth.
Enrollment
At the beginning of the school year, we were almost 30 below are projected enrollment of
543. To bring up our enrollment Stacey allowed open enrollment of approximately 10
students to attend Vassar.
Student Council
Thanks to everyone for helping out with our food drive in December. We were able to
collect a lot of non-perishable foods for those in need during the holiday season. Student council
will be brainstorming more ideas to help out the school and community during the remainder of
the 2014 school year. We will also be promoting our "Spirit Days" each month. Our next meeting
will take place Wednesday, Jan 8th.

Notas de la clase
Kinder Es hora de celebrar el año nuevo y celebrar nuestro aprendizaje nuevo! En la
lectura, estamos trabajando en mencionar el principio, intermedio y el fin (en orden),
para las historias que leemos. Es muy importante que usemos el lenguaje primero, a
continuación y por último. Estas palabras son muy importantes porque vamos a empezar
a escribir en el género de "como hacer", y cuando le damos instrucciones de cómo hacer
algo, vamos a utilizar el mismo vocabulario. Continuaremos usando los sonidos del
comienzo y el final para leer y escribir palabras, por lo tanto, los animamos a seguir
practicando esta habilidad con su hijo así como a trabajar con las palabras comunes.
Cuando lean la tarea, por favor pídale a su niño hacer conexiones personales con
historias con respuestas como: mi parte favorita es... Esto me hace pensar en... Por
favor, trabaje sobre la escritura de los números hasta 20, y también, cuando practiqué el
contar, recuérdele a su hijo que mueva los objetos y luego vuelva a verificar el total. Esto
asegura que su hijo mantiene un registro de cuántos tienen y no solo dice los números
en orden. Además, por favor practique lo que es uno más y uno menos que un número.
Recuerde que aún está muy fresco, y vamos a salir casi todos los días. Es importante
etiquetar todo de ropa de abrigo de su hijo para que pueden ser encontradas más
fácilmente si se pierden. Gracias!
1er grado Wow, no podemos creer que ya llegamos a finales del 2013. Este mes en
ciencia observamos los ciclos de vida de las mariposas y escarabajos. Durante las
matemáticas diseñamos encuestas, recabamos datos e hicimos gráficas para mostrar
nuestros resultados. También hemos aprendido a añadir diez a un número de un dígito.
Nuestros jóvenes autores escribieron algunas indicaciones muy útiles en sus escritos de
“cómo hacer”! Y por último y más importante aún, continuamos creciendo en nuestras
habilidades de lectura. Durante diciembre nos concentramos en contar historias con
nombres de vocabulario y el carácter del texto. Los lectores competentes tuvieron que
saltar tres niveles de lectura de este trimestre para mantenerse en el nivel de grado!! Por
último, nos gustaría desear a todos nuestros estudiantes y sus familias una maravillosa
Navidad y un feliz año nuevo!
2 º grado
La Comunidad de Vassar espera que todas nuestras familias que nos
apoyan tengan unas felices fiestas. Cuando la escuela se reanude en enero, los
estudiantes de segundo grado continuarán centrándose en la escritura con el fin de
prepararlos mejor para el año próximo las pruebas estandarizadas. En lectura,
seguiremos trabajar la idea principal y próximos pasos individualizados para cada
estudiante. Nuestro enfoque de matemáticas será de suma y resta en una variedad de
niveles. Buscaremos en los problemas de la historia con el fin de mostrar a los
estudiantes la importancia de las matemáticas en su mundo cotidiano. Enero va a ser un
mes de trabajo y esperamos que todo el mundo tenga unas emocionantes, seguras y
relajantes vacaciones.
3er grado ¡Feliz año nuevo! Esperamos que tus vacaciones de invierno hayan sido
relajantes y se hayan divertido con amigos y familiares. Estamos muy contentos de
comenzar un nuevo aprendizaje del tercer trimestre. Nuestra unidad de investigación de
matemáticas será de multiplicación y división de grupos iguals, una unidad muy
importante de estudio para estudiantes de terceros grado. En la escritura trabajaremos
para completar la redacción de informes. Nuestra próxima unidad de estudio es ensayo
escribiendo así estaremos trabajando en escribir un ensayo para responder a un
mensaje. Continuaremos trabajando en estrategias en todo el grupo, pequeños grupos y
práctica independiente de lectura. Por favor, asegúrese de continuar leyendo cada
semana en casa 150 minutos para practicar tus estrategias de lectura! Como puedes ver,
tenemos un montón de trabajo importante que hacer.
4 º grado En la escritura, estaremos trabajando en temas que los alumnos de cuarto
grado sienten pasión y escribiendo ensayos con sus opiniones y razones para apoyar su
opinión. En matemáticas, continuaremos nuestro trabajo con el cómputo y valor
posicional. Los estudiantes aumentarán gradualmente sus conocimientos de valor
posicional conformé avanzamos hacia números en los cientos de miles. A pesar de que la
multiplicación y la división no son nuestro objetivo principal en este trimestre, por favor
continúe revisando los hechos para mantener la fluidez en estas áreas. Por favor continúe
hablando con sus hijos sobre lo que han leído durante sus 30 minutos de lectura cada
noche. Esperamos que todos hayan tenido unas relajantes vacaciones de invierno.

5 º grado
Estamos muy contentos de ver las caras sonrientes regresando del
descanso. Espero que todos estén descansados y listos para el nuevo trimestre. En
matemáticas, nuestros alumnos de quinto grado trabajaran en agregar, restar, multiplicar
y dividir decimales a centésimas y comparándolos con las milésimas. En lectura,
seguiremos usando la discusión y el diálogo para profundizar nuestra comprensión y
movernos más allá del significado literal del texto. Nuestro género de escritura nos aleja
de la narrativa hacia un ensayo persuasivo y explicativo. Estaremos también atados a
lalectura y a la escritura juntos, expresando nuestro pensamiento acerca de lo que
estamos leyendo a través de las respuestas escritas. El clima en la tierra será el tema
explorado en la ciencia. Por último, vamos a discutir el crecimiento de América en los
estudios sociales. Los estudiantes unirán la escritura y los estudios sociales para
completar un proyecto de investigación.

¡Bienvenidos! Esperamos que todos hayan tenido un gran descanso de invierno! La
Unidad de este mes se centrará en "Los Estados Unidos - hace mucho tiempo y hoy en
día." Los estudiantes aprenderán sobre objetos y eventos del pasado y del presente, y
harán comparaciones entre los dos. Los estudiantes también aprenderán sobre personas
importantes del pasado y cómo contribuyeron al desarrollo de nuestro país. Gracias a las
familias que envían pañuelitos adicionales y toallitas desinfectantes para ayudarnos a
luchar contra los gérmenes en el aula. Si todavía no han enviado artículos adicionales, los
puede enviar en cualquier momento. Vamos a terminar un gran 2013!

 Los estudiantes de 3rd y 5º grado utilizarán grabadoras en la clase de música durante
el 3rd trimestre . Si usted ha comprado previamente un grabador para su niño, pida a
su hijo que la traiga el día de la clase de música en enero. (Deben haber llegado
órdenes de grabadoras que vencían el 13 de diciembre durante las vacaciones de
invierno. Los instrumentos han sido entregados a los estudiantes que los ordenaron
durante la primera semana de descanso.)
 Los estudiantes 2nd y 4º grado estarán trabajando en sus actuaciones después de las
vacaciones de invierno. 2nd grado está programado para llevarse a cabo el jueves, 17
de abril a las 18:30, los estudiantes de 4º grado estarán actuando una semana más
tarde el jueves, 24 de abril, a las 18:30 Ambas actuaciones se celebrarán en el
gimnasio de la escuela primaria de Vassar.
 El coro de 2nd-5º de Vassar comenzará a reunirse el lunes, enero 13th, 2014. El coro de
Vassar es un grupo extracurricular realizado por la señora González. El Coro se reúne
antes de la escuela los lunes y los jueves de 8:00-8:40. El coro ofrecerá un concierto a
sus padres el martes 29 de abril, a las 18:30 en el gimnasio de la escuela primaria de
Vassar. Todos los estudiantes de 2nd-5º grado pueden participar en el coro. Los
estudiantes deberán entregar un permiso cuando se unen al coro. Si su estudiante no
trae a casa un permiso durante la primera semana de clases en enero, recibirán uno
cuando llegue a su primer ensayo de coro. El coro se reunirá solamente en los días
cuando la escuela está en sesión. También no habrá ningún ensayo del coro el jueves,
23 de enero, debido a una conferencia que asistirá a la señora González. Los
Calendarios se darán a los estudiantes cuando asistan a su primer ensayo.

Cada grado tuvo la oportunidad de iniciar un proyecto de arcilla en diciembre. Aprendieron
cómo rodar, pellizcar y anotar su arcilla. Algunos proyectos han sido enviados a casa y otros
estarán en exhibición en la escuela. Arcilla es definitivamente una de los materiales favoritos de
nuestros estudiantes! Llega el año nuevo, diferentes clases aprenderás el arte de la fabricación
de títeres, grabado, papel maché, trabajo en papel y por supuesto un montón de pintura!

En educación física los estudiantes también conocerán al principio FITT (frecuencia, intensidad,

PTO quisiera agradecer a todos los que ayudaron a hacer que el baile y la tienda de
regalos fuera un éxito. Todos los estudiantes se divirtieron en ambos. Cuando
regresemos de vacaciones, el PTO será anfitrión de una noche de cine familiar, una de
familia de lectura / noche de intercambio de libros, así como de una noche de
McTeachers, por favor espere los volantes con la información en relación con estas
actividades.
La siguiente reunión del PTO es el martes 14 de enero en la cafetería de Vassar a
partir de las 6:30, esperamos verte.

Para ser categorizada como una actuación escuela los puntos ganados en la actividad deben
estar en o por encima del 59% y una mejora respecto a nuestro anterior de47% pero
inferior al 59%.
El logro académico de nuestras calificaciones es de 12.5, alrededor de 25 puntos
El crecimiento académico en nuestra calificación es acercarse a 26,8 puntos sobre 50
Brechas académicas nuestra calificación es acercarse a 13 puntos sobre 25
Total es de 52,3 de 100 puntos
Ha habido un cambio de matemáticas y lectura. En el pasado, nuestros índices de lectura
fue "No cumple", y actualmente es nuestra puntuación de matemáticas. En la lectura que
nos hemos desplazado hasta "cumple".
Extracto de crecimiento de la escuela de Vassar
El porcentaje de crecimiento en la lectura cambio del 34th a 40th. En matemáticas, el
crecimiento fue de 62nd a 39th; en la escritura fue establecido en 46th. Las expectativas del
estado y distrito es para que todas las áreas deben estar en el porciento de 55.
TCAP .- puntuaciones son usados para determinado el crecimiento, donde sólo podemos
usar 4 y 5 grado. 3 grado tomara el TCAP", sin embargo, no tienen datos del año anterior
para comparar el crecimiento.
Inscripción
Al principio del año escolar, teníamos casi 30 estudiantes por debajo de la inscripción
proyectada de 543. Para alcanzar nuestra inscripción la directora permitió la inscripción
abierta de aproximadamente 10 estudiantes para que asistan a Vassar.
Consejo estudiantil Mr. Chapla & Mr. Johnson
Gracias a todos por ayudar con nuestra colecta de alimentos en diciembre. Hemos podido
recoger un montón de alimentos no perecederos para los necesitados durante las fiestas
navideñas. El Consejo estudiantil va proponer más ideas para ayudar a la escuela y a la
comunidad durante el resto del año escolar 2014. Estaremos también promoviendo nuestros
"días de espíritu" cada mes. Nuestra próxima reunión se llevará a cabo el miércoles, 8 de enero.
