Chapel Glen All-Star News November 2016 Dear Chapel Glen Families, We hope that everyone had a wonderful two weeks of Fall Break! The students have been sharing all of the fun things that they participated in over break. Thank you to all parents that attended parent/teacher conferences! We had a wonderful turnout this year! If you have not had the chance to meet with your child’s teacher for your conference, please contact them as soon as possible to set that up. We hope that you will continue to work with your child’s teacher throughout the year to help identify activities that can be completed at home to help support learning, and continue to monitor your child’s progress in the Skyward system. Please communicate with the classroom teacher if you have any questions regarding grades or attendance. All classroom teachers are very intentional about posting weekly grades and making sure you are as up-to-date as possible with your child’s progress. If you need assistance in finding your username and password please contact your child’s teacher and we will be happy to assist you. Students are continuing to follow the STAR Guidelines and earn stars on their Star Cards. We will continue with our school-wide positive behavior opportunities. In December we will have our second quarter Star Card Celebration. Please continue to praise your child for following the school procedures and encourage them to find new ways to be a Chapel Glen All Star! With the holidays right around the corner, there is no better time to stop and thank our parents for all you do. We appreciate the time you spend supporting your child’s education and for working with your child’s teacher to create the most effective learning environment for your child. We couldn’t do what we do without you, so thank you again for allowing us to work with your child each and every day. Emily Marshall Notes From the Nurse: Is your student struggling in Math? Do they need some extra practice? Check out these websites for fun math practice! We always recommend that parents check out the websites before allowing kids to access them. Things change fast in cyber space and what is safe for kids one day may not be safe the next. If these don’t seem to interest your student, just google “math practice”. You will be amazed at what you can find. Again, we recommend that parents check out websites BEFORE the children use them. Notes from the Media Center Strategies for Creating a Strong Password During weekly library specials this school year, students in grades 3 through 6 have focused on different computer skills to ensure that they are good digital citizens. Computers have become a standard way of communicating in our society. We want to ensure that our students are safe and making good digital decisions that may not only affect them now but also later on in life. Information that they leave about themselves creates a digital trail. This is referred to as their digital footprint. One such skill we worked on in library specials was creating a strong password. Students were asked to share these strategies with family members at home. We thought all of our Chapel Glen families might appreciate the following information: DO’s* • DO share your password only with your parents. • DO create passwords with at least eight characters. • DO use combinations of letters, numbers, and symbols. • DO change your password regularly – at least every six months. DON’Ts* • DON’T give a password to anyone else – not even your friends. • DON’T use passwords that are easy for people you know to guess, like your nickname, birthday, address, phone number or your pet’s name. • DON’T use any private information in your password. • DON’T use a word in the dictionary as a password. FITNESSGRAM is a comprehensive fitness assessment consisting of five health related activities. One of these five tests is the PACER. The PACER assesses cardiovascular fitness. Research indicates that acceptable levels of aerobic capacity are associated with reduced health risks. A new school record was established in the PACER test. Sixth grade student, Ethan Gossett, scored 90 laps during the aerobic assessment. The prior record was 85 laps. Congratulations Ethan!
